We can do our best to maximize the team we have right now, without mortgaging the future. I can't stress enough that this is the ONLY year in the foreseeable future that this team will have $10m+ to play with at the deadline. To not take advantage of that is malpractice.

Could also use that cap space to take on bad contracts that come off after the season, with assets also coming OUR way. Some teams need to clear space for trades of their own or have guys coming off of LTIR...
Those assets could be used for obtaining non-rentals, which is the only issue I have really. If you are just talking about getting upgrades that are controllable for a number of years, then yeah that's worth spending assets, I still say rentals are overall a huge detriment to this team beyond this year, while IMO still not setting us up as the Cup favorite this year.

iF you want a top tier defensively strong center you want Hertl, not Scheifele.

I mean to adding the level of players in your hypothetical? No, but no team would (or could) do that.

Those teams all made major deadline acquisitions and then won. Tampa and Boston made several.

Yeah, but like, while they were more in practice, Coleman and Goodrow were 4th liners for Tampa.

Boston traded Wheeler for Peverly. Hardly a big name rental.

LAK traded a 25 y/o defender in Jack J for a 27 y/o center in Jeff Carter. Carter had like what 7 years left on his contract, definitely not a big name rental. Albeit he was a 2nd line center for them, which is tremendously unusual. I can’t think of any other example in the 00’s when a team added a 2nd line C at the deadline to win a Cup.

Chi added a 3rd line rental in Vermette.

But why do we need a pick? We have prospects. We've been stockpiling picks for years. What we need are: young players who are ready to play NOW, and/or rentals who can help us win now.

The Rangers have a very realistic path to contention this year. The fact that we are a borderline Top 5 team in the league without a competent 3C or third pairing LD is actually a great sign. There really isn't much we need to add to have a realistic chance. There are also benefits to adding a big name rental to pair with Laf on the third line. It could wind up unlocking his game.
I agree 100% on all of this. The one thing about collecting all these assets is too be able to use them in certain trades to help compliment what we have.
But some just want to have a fantasy team with superstars at all positions and under 25:huh:. Some want to bring up ‘94 and the trades of young talent we HAD TO MAKE to win the cup but somehow complain that was worse thing we ever did….I guess winning the cup is not the objective in playing the season:laugh:

Sykora and Antropov were both OK rentals but neither made a lick of difference in the playoffs.

Between Clowe, Staal, McCabe- some of this team's worst deals have been for rentals.

What we need is a team that can win a Cup(s), the disagreement revolves around how best to do that.

We have tons of defensive prospects, I don't think we have nearly enough young talent or insulation in the system for forwards for the future.

Yeah, I just don't agree. I think their record is a bit of a mirage. I think at best by making major additions you put yourself on equal footing with about 5-6 other teams. If I have to spend that much I want to be clearly ahead.

I think part of the Hertl situation is whether or not he wants to commit to SJ. If he’s not interested in signing long term they have to move him
Of course, but they do have the money now to do it, and honestly Doug Wilson has never been the most forward thinking GM (See Eric Karlson trade). He might self rent him against interest.

Today's betting odds for winning just the Eastern Conference... not good.

How I feel about this Rangers team is public knowledge at this point and I'm not gonna re-hash it in regards to these odds. THAT BEING SAID, having the Leafs at +375 is a sucker bet and a half and anyone who takes that will be thanked by Vegas for their donation.

I really want them to try a Lundkvist-Schneider pair to see how it goes. Nils has stated he is comfortable playing the left side. I think they could be sneaky good together.

Nils wasn't comfortable on his normal side not sure how switching would help that

Chychrun trade only really makes sense if you're going to make a second move which would mean trading Miller with another asset or two for a center.

Not sure if people noticed but in the first period Toronto generated a lot of offense by exclusively targeting the Left side of the D for zone entries. It's a different game going up against Lindgren - Miller - Nemeth vs Fox - Trouba - Schneider. Luckily the Rangers managed to exploit Toronto's own weak D and got a few lucky bounces, but the first period especially was not pretty.

Add Chychryn to the left side and it's a completely different look so I can see the interest.

I like Lindgren but I think he's miscast as a first pairing guy. I'd be more comfortable with him on the second pairing.

I'm not sure you understand what betting odds actually are. It's not 10 NHL experts picking which team they like to win it all, it's simply the amount of money Vegas has taken in on these teams to win it. If you got enough of your rich friends together & went & dropped a few hundred grand on the Rangers to win the Cup, they'd move up the list.

Right, but the gambling consensus, while not made up exclusively of experts, is still a consensus of some kind. It's not pinpoint accurate but it's a view on what the public thinks in aggregate of the teams competing.

Unless folks wanna replace Laf, Kakko & / Or Chytil... the trade deadline stuff should be for 3rd LD

Those are the holes. I have zero desire to trade a 1st until we're REALLY close or if it's for a center who's young enough to fit the "next" window timeline.

Otherwise, save the assets and be patient.

Weaponize the cap space? Sure. Absolutely.
