Probably, but I really don't care to. I have no need to convince you to have the same opinion as me, just giving MINE. If you want to convince me that Vegas odds are a shitty measure, you can go ahead and do the digging. Have fun!

I'm not trying to convince you of anything and your response is pretty silly, I was curious what the odds said to compare accuracy to what actually happened. For all I know they were mostly correct, I dont know and that is why I asked. No where did I attack vegas odds, so take a breath...

you just said 9-7-1, that would mean 2 games over .500, we dont act like otl count against .500 standings in normal times so lets not cherry pick it here.

And if they were 7-9-1 it would be talked about how they cant beat any good teams, so let's not act like the 9 wins are insignificant, especially when how many of those games came with Igor out?

You said:
This is the roughest stretch of the Rangers season these next two weeks before the break and will define the Rangers season - can they compete with the big boys or are they gonna fold?

So based on that you are going to determine which of these players and in what capacity they can "play with the big boys or fold." Can chytil be an effective

Winger for the step brothers against good teams? we dont know that right now.

Is Goodrow an effective enough 3c for this team with presumably laf on one of his wings against those good teams? we dont know that right now

You learn more about a team through every test they come upon. A couple weeks ago when the lost 3 in 4 people around here were waiting for the wheels to fall off, since then they are 7 and 4.

If they lose to Toronto and Carolina than the conversation changes, but let's let them play those games first.
That 1 is a loss, so they are 9-8.

Which teams were the 7 and which teams were the 4?

There is nothing in it for us stockpiling prospects in absurdity. I have nothing against dealing a number of these kids.

But what we needs is good contracts the coming 3-4 years. Not to piss those assets away by adding some big name vet that won’t even help us.

If we're going to consolidate in trade, again, it needs to be in a package for a long term piece.

I think there is a happy medium out there between getting a rental or two and not breaking the bank. I don't want to mortgage major pieces for a rental. A 2nd round pick and a player B level prospect or someone like Hajek or Gauthier, I don't see why not to at least strengthen our line up if we can, especially since we can eat contracts easily. It is why someone like Kessel makes sense. We won't be giving up a big piece and I can live with one less 2nd round pick.

One thing I really hope Drury does is use that cap space to grab some free draft picks with helping with retention for teams trying to fit players in. I understand if he doesn't want to help a team in the East due to having to potentially face them, but there should be no reason to not be involved with teams in the West.

Honestly with all this cap room that is absolutely what we should do.

We should take on salary in exchange for more futures/picks.

Silly? Nah. Lazy? Sure. Take a breath? I think maybe you are projecting. I merely gave my opinion. Hahaha. I'm in no way bothered by your response or by you thinking my opinion stinks (if you do). I'm commenting on a hockey message board, not doing a term paper. Hahaha. It's all good.

I feel like we're in a Catch-22 with people not wanting to make any moves to solidify this season because our 5v5 results are obviously subpar, but in making potential moves to solidify a run this season we could be addressing those very weaknesses on the roster that are causing the subpar 5v5 results.

No, I don't think we can add players to address those weak 5 v 5 results. The reason for those weaknesses goes beyond having a hole or two, it's also largely based on the kids (Laf, Kakko, Chytil, Gauthier, Miller, Lundkvist/Jones/Schneider) just not being ready for prime time. It's just going to take time.

It's especially not going to help if we acquire players who aren't generating possession and driving offense, like Pavelski, who is Kreider-like.

They are one game over .500. That's not impressive to me. It's more likely than not that by saturday morning they are below it.

Yes, every team could be that, but there are teams that are way more likely to have that happen. A team that can't score 5v5 is more likely to be dropping in the standings than a team that can.

We also don't need the next two weeks to identify the adjustments that need to be made. It's game 40, if they don't know by now, they never will - it's evident.
Does your opinion change if they win the next two games by multiple goals each?

I dont know, but I do remember it included b2b wins against the bolts, or does that not count bc kucherov was hurt?

I have never seen a fanbase try to discredit the quality of their own team as this board does at times. It isnt even being objective, I can handle objective. It is a constant need to say how shitty things are or how the good isnt really that good...

Not roster-related but FYI
NHL released updated schedule, NYR postponed games and 1 future gets moved

Not too drastic for NYR

No, those were good wins. But they followed that up by losing to Vegas and the Kings. So consistently they can't beat the better teams in the league. The standings are meaningless if a team isn't playing the right way.

I have also never seen a fanbase so rabid to defend a team with gigantic faults that will prevent them from getting to where we actually want to be. I have high standards, so I want this team to be more than what it is - why are you happy with what you've seen so far? You're happy with their 5v5 play? You're ok with the overreliance on special teams? You're ok with them sleepwalking through games against teams they should beat like the Sabres, Coyotes and Flyers? I'm not OK with any of that - why is their coaching staff?

The reason it keeps coming up is because the Rangers problems from October are still the Rangers problems in late January - that is concerning. And when they are their same problems in May and they are a first round out people shouldn't be like "why did this happen?" because we've been telling you all along. They need to be better in order to compete in May, and that's a lot more than just adding a player or two - it's coaching and its a mindset and it's the players starting to play the right way. Let's see how they play tonight and Friday, especially Friday because that IS a team they are likely to see in the First or Second round.

Miller is not a rental.

Also if it was easy to get centers, the Ranger would have gotten centers by now. If you don’t draft them they are impossible to get at good value. If I was the team with the center, in your scenario, I’d rather keep the center.

Yes he basically is. Great we get him for this year and the rest of next season. After that are we really going to resign him at 30yo to a similiar contract krieder got? Hell no not interested in giving up our prime assets for this guy. I understand centers dont just grow on trees but there are guys you go all in for and guys you just dont. Miller is not who go all in for.

Pretty sure I did not say Miller was a rental.
I also didn't say it was EASY to get centers, hence "overpay." I said the concept is that the NYR should deal from a position of surplus to get one. Maybe we aren't eager to overpay, or maybe other teams want MORE of an overpay than management has offered so far.

Anybody else got any Strawmen they want to march into the discussion? Hahaha.

Ill help you. JT Miller is not the guy you overpay for and thats what the Nucks are looking for.

To the bolded: then we just fundamentally disagree. You add an upgrade to the D and a solid middle 6 player or two and you can absolutely see improvements to their 5v5 game. I don't see how replacing worse players with better ones could do anything but improve their 5v5 results.

I mean, you're not going to turn them into an analytical machine like the Hurricanes or anything, but you can 100% IMPROVE their 5v5 play with a few adds. Having elite specials teams and an elite goalie as well as the elite offensive talent (Panarin, Fox, Mika) if they can just improve their 5v5 play a little bit then they're easily legitimate contenders.

You don't have to be #1 in all stats across the board just to have a shot, sometimes around here it feels like that's how a lot of people feel. Unless we're in first place and in the top 3 or so for all analytical categories then we're not legit and there's no sense in even trying to win, but that's not how sports work. Maybe a potential run is more improbable but it's certainly not impossible even if the team stands pat and makes no moves.

No kidding the Canucks want an over pay. Who ever asks for an underpay unless the asset is completely toxic?

Completely missed the point, but ok.

The deal for Ryan Mcdonagh was hajek, 1st, and howden. Which equates to our prospect board to a 1st, reunenen, and a guy like vierling/pujeniemi.

Not our top prospects like Nils, Schnieder, and so on.
