We are so close to the 5 slot. Not entirely far off from the 3 slot.

Get to the 3-5 slot and package that pick with one of the hopefully (2) late 1sts from TB and WPG for the #2 pick. Add a 2nd rounder if you have to so you can grab Kakko.

The Rangers sit 8th in the current draft standings but have a punchers chance to get as high as 4th. They are one point behind Chicago and Vancouver and three points behind the Almighty Ducks. The top three teams seem unlikely to be caught and the results of tonight’s game will indicate whether the Rangers have much of a chance to catch the Devils. Next weeks game against Vancouver is huge and the entire western trip will give us a pretty good idea where this will net out.

I'll be at the Vancouver game so the tank is off for that one
Hopefully it goes to OT though so Vancouver takes a point too

This sets up an interesting draft scenario and could shape other roster moves;

Rangers at 1 — Hughes — someone moves to the wing permanently
Rangers at 2 — Kakko — RW (perfect)
Rangers at 3 — Your guess is as good as mine
Rangers at 5/6/7 — Most likely get a center, Bynam probably gone by then

Byram or Dach(or whichever center they covet) at 3

Not close. Lemme take you back:

It's 2001, and it's the Kovalchuk draft. Atlanta has the 1st pick, and Montreal REALLY wants it. Montreal dangles #7, #25, Richard Zednik (23 y/o 45ish point middle 6er), Andrei Markov (Tolvanen level prospect on D who was clearly too good for the RSL and had a pretty nice rookie season), and Jose Theodore (meh goalie who won the Hart/Vezina the next year b/c goalies).

Atlanta said no. And was probably correct to do so.

EK is a RD. Hajek is a LD. Why are they playing their off positions?

Trouba is a RD. Staal is a LD. Why are they playing their off positions?

ADA is another RD and you have him playing on the Left side for some unknown reason.

/Confused

Glad to see you guys are awake I put all the RD and LD together

We have Kravtsov & Buchnevich at RW
I think our biggest need is a right-handed sniper who plays LW

If there was only an elite LW'er, who can snipe and be a playmaker, available ...

It'd be, almost, too good to be true...
I’ll be very surprised if Panarin doesn’t end up a Ranger. He fills our biggest organizational need, he wants to play in NYC, we have the cap space, and he would be a hell of a mentor for all these young Russians we have.

I disagree here.

Say the Rangers end up in the 5 slot. I think there are solid kids available even through the 15th pick. Wouldnt it be wise for a team like the Kings, who are staring a rebuild in the face, to trade back and get more assets. There system is not that deep.

To move back 3 slots and get an extra 1st rounder, a 2nd rounder and maybe a B level prospect would be interesting for them. Maybe they have some level of interest in Strome. Still a young player who plays a good 2-way game.

I just dont think it is unrealistic idea that we could trade into the 2 slot. The #1 pick no, but the 2 can happen

Also youre using a proposal from 18 years ago as the barometer

I think it's unrealistic. Look at who's picking at 2.

Would you move our 2nd OA pick for that? I sure as hell wouldn't. Teams picking top-2 want a potential superstar. There are two potential superstars this draft. And they're going to go #1 and #2.

If its the #4 OA, #26 OA, #35OA, and a prospect, i think its certainly considered.

If it was us I would consider it. At #4 you still get a top prospect plus you add at least the chance at landing 2 more very good prospects

We traded the 26th and 48th last year to jump up 4 measly spots last draft.

No team is stupid enough to miss out on KK so they can settle for a guy like Cozens or Dach and have some late rounders and a prospect. Agree to disagree if you want. The value is not there.

Also, I don't see us getting the 4th OA.

Agree to disagree.

If they trade (2) 1st, a 2nd, + prospect then i thibk its considered.

No matter how good the reports are on KK, he is no sure thing and getting more picks could be benefitial to the acquiring team.

Youre crapping on Cozens, Dach, Turcotte but they could very well be just as good prospects

Is Hughes as highly touted now as Kovalchuk was then?

Based on what the Kings have on the roster that they can potentially move for a rebuild, I could see a scenario in which they trade back from 2, but its going to cost more than the Rangers will probably want to part with.

Rebuilds take on a different air to them when you get that elite level prospect like a Hughes or a Kakko.

Its possible, but highly unlikely 2 gets moved

I dunno. He was better than Spezza and most drafts Spezza was a slam dunk #1.

But youth is fetishized A LOT heavier now than it was then and Atlanta (who wanted to win right away) wouldnt take a 5 for 1 that blows RGY's proposal out of the water, even accounting for 1st OV vs 2nd OV..

I went back and looked at the last 10 years, and in only 2 of them would you trade 2 for 5 + 25 + stuff, and one of those drafts was 2013 which is the 2nd worst draft of the last 30 years.

2nd ends up being a borderline franchise to franchise guy most of the time, 5th ends up being Ryan Strome, Michael Dal Colle, Luke Schenn a frightening amount of the time.
