A question that cannot be answered in a vacuum. All depends on who else is around them. Have they taken even further steps in their development? If your top line forwards are your top forwards, isn't it the way it is supposed to be?

But again, this just obfuscates what you seem to be proposing. That being constant trading away of your best players until you are bad enough to have the first overall pick. You believe that gives you your best chance at a superstar player.

Pretty much drafting at least high for a few years yeah

Eh I don’t agree. NYR fans had no problem hyping their Swedish goaltender. Homegrown aspect, maybe, but not nationality.

I think it’s two things:

1. Mika has shown these flashes before, but the issue has been health/consistency. I personally am a believer that he has taken a step but I wouldn’t be surprised if there was still skepticism out there.

2. So much of the “hype factor” depends on expectations. Given his draft pedigree and the Brassard that the NYR dealt for him, expectation by most was he would develop into a ~1C. He has. He met expectations.

Fair or not I think that’s a factor...it’s why people “go nuts” for 3rd liners or 2nd pair D who come out of nowhere. There were no expectations for that player to become anything significant so it is seen as a huge bonus.

But think about how long it took Lundqvist to reach that level, and frankly he’s still not as revered as he should be when you really think about.

And that’s on here, where we tend to have a broader appreciation for the nuances of the game. But looking at this on both a micro and macro level, Mika’s never really gotten the focus. Hell, this year I’d argue even Kreider has been more of a focus.

So yes, trade away each and every player for a number of years, ensuring that you are in the driver's seat for the first overall pick? This summer, trade away Krieder and ZBad, yes? Now Chytil and Kravstov are manning the top line next year. Are they the next in line to get traded? Or is that the summer in which Skej and DeAngelo are moved? Now you have NOTHING. And a bunch of 20-23 year olds manning the top two lines and the top two defensive pairings. How has that worked out historically?

I was in between jobs when the new CBA was released, so I read the entire document

I just like reading about the business side of things. It's very intriguing to me, probably because of my profession. It's easy to remember, when it's something you enjoy reading. Maybe one day, there's a job in the NHL for me. I could advice GMs league-wide on what to do hahahaha. For now, I will just be the guy who explains everything on HFNYR
LOL...AK...have you ever read the Brodeur divorce court case documents...now that was quite a read . The CBA would be a good read too...I am sure there are many things us average fans are not aware about . I appreciate any of that info....so thanks !!!

I dont get the reason or point of Dreger’s comments. To stir the pot? To explain how you can request a certain price but may not get it? Geez
Entirely bc it was a Canadian team and putting the spin on the positives of a trade for a Canadian market.
Didn't you hear that Branstrom suddenly became Karlsson 2.0 once he was traded from Vegas to Ottawa? A top 5 prospect they now say...

See, here I disagree.

I think if anything, we over hype Europeans in this forum.

I’d say it’s a pretty interesting mix.

You have some people who are, at best, somewhat dismissive of a lot of European players — especially if it’s not a prospect who slaps you in the face and gets your attention. But there’s an overall sense of hedging with them that we don’t see as often with North American kids.

On the other end of the spectrum, there are posters who tend to be very enthsiastic about European players and setting pretty high bars for these kids before they ever come over.

But when push comes to shove, the average European player generally doesn’t receive the same level of attention compared to their North American counterparts — both locally and abroad.

Can you imagine if Lundqvist was a Canadian goalie? That’s why I can’t help but feel that if the conversation were about Mike Zibane, drafted out of Moose Jaw in the WHL, there’d be an extra bit of attention.

I don't think Kreider is a first line W. The streaks are too few and far between.
Many goal scorers are streaky. How many teams can he not be a first line wing for? You are going to be able to name 60 wings that are better?

First line C and he’s a righty shooter on the PP check

Stud righty 1st pairing offensive D check

Elite goaltending (between hank shesterkin Georgiev Allaire I’m not worried) check

Those are the 3 hardest things to find and imo we’ve got them already. Now build around them and we’ll be in good shape very soon.
none of the D are studs...

Me likely.

3 key things need to happen, all +/- 2 years

1. Transition from Staal, Shatty, Smith into our D pipeline
2. Start Shesty tuteledge
3. Rebuild our F pipeline, quality and depth

Names Mika Krav
Krieder Chytil Buch
Vesey Howton Andersson
Lemmy Strome Fast
Nieves

I’d love to sign A Lee and trade either Vesey, Names, or Strome in that order, either way there’s youth, depth, balance, and flexibility on 4 lines.

Once we transition away from the aforementioned D and get some draft and trade assets we could look like this in 2 years:

Krieder Mika Krav
A Lee Chytil Shiny new toy via trade/draft/FA
Andersson Howton Buch
Lemmy Strome Fast
(I think we resign Krieds, Strome, and Fast, Vesey and Names gone)

LD: Skjei and 2 of Miller/Hajek/Lindgren/Claesson (7th D)/Rykov

RD: ADA and 2 of Pionk/Lundkvist/Keane/Tarmo/Raddysh/Gross

If I had my druthers of would be:

Skjei ADA
Miller Keane
Lindgren Lundkvist
Claesson

It’s that he’s not homegrown and feels like he’s been in the league for 10 years that people are skeptical. If he was a Rangers 6th overall pick and came in to the league at 22 23 when we traded for him he’d have the full love of the fan base and would be getting his dues. But at the end of the day. You play center score 30’goals and put up a ppg people will start to call you elite no matter where you came from. It’s happening now and another year like this next year and he’ll solidify himself among the top guys in the league.

And yet that’s not stopped us before.

ADA is now the same age as Mika was when we acquired him. Less established, but the same age. He’s on his third organization.

Adam Graves was 23 and on his third organization when he broke out and put it all together for the Rangers.

Brassard was even older, and had just about as many miles under the hood when he took his game to the next level with the Rangers.

Not nearly as much hedging there.

We’re not really in unchartered territory here.

Kreider is the new McD. A first line player who isn’t the top player in his category, but isn’t a second line player either.

And like McD, it’s going to be debated far more than one would think it should be.

Kreider is our oldest forward, but we have a young team now - so I`ve notion Gorton lock him up long term. And if we hit with Hughes or Byram in the draft we could sign couple of big name UFA and aim for playoffs already next year. If we don`t hit with an elite skilled player - I`ve no idea what Gordon will do now maybe move Kreider for 2020 pick.

I believe that decision will be made this summer window and in the draft 2019 which is why I`m so excited. Lias is very similar to Jesper Fast and what he brings, but Jesper is soon 28 - so I think we should move him in the summer window with Nam to save cap as well. We can`t have 4 mil cap hit on our 3rd line. :)

Kreider is a top line winger. He may not be the guy you want on your team as your best winger, but if he's your #2 wing, you are in really good shape at that position.

Every center who plays next to Kreider is better than when they don't play next to him. This has been going for almost four years now. Your top line doesn't have to be loaded to the hilt. If Mkia and Kravtsov can form the nucleus of the top line, then having Kreider support your 2nd line center, be it one of Dach/Cozens/Turcotte/Zegras/Newhook, then you're doing just fine. The key is drafting or acquiring the others pieces.

The thing is, what is the return on Fast? a 2nd? We're not getting a haul for Fast. He is what he is. At this point, it's better to keep him here. Hopefully he can slot correctly into the lineup again and be the team's #9-#11 best forward for next season.

If we're out of it come next deadline and we can get something for him, if we have no aspirations to re-sign, then that works. He's better here to start next season than we are to have to replace him and get basically the same thing in return at the deadline.
