Gourde would be an excellent acquisition, I just don't see why Seattle would trade him right now. If he is available we should be all over him.

He's not. I asked them on their board--hypothetically--what it would cost to get Gourde at 50% off. The general consensus was that it would never happen (particularly the retention), but in the interest of hypotheticals, they gave the following responses:

"Multiple 1st rounds picks + A prospect"

"2022 1st + Lundkvist + Cuylle + 2024 1st"

"For me, for an un-retained Gourde, I would honestly ask for ONE of Kakko or Lundkvist. Then if you are asking for 50% retention for 3.5 years, I would think at least another mid round first in value should be added, but since your first is quite possibly going to be in the bottom quarter of the draft, I think another young asset or multiple picks would be required. Possibly Chytil OR Jones and a 2nd."

Frankly, I thought that last one was even a bit cheap on the cost of retention. A couple million in retention for ONE season has cost as much as a 1st rounder before. For three seasons? No way that brings back just an additional 1st.

Incidentally, they have a really nice group of folks over there.

I remember my first trade deadline

Everyone knows that Gourdes are purely decorative. You shouldn’t overpay for them

just let Berard hopefully will be our version of Gourdes and hopefully sign this year and make his debut with the team in the playoffs like Kreider did. I like Gourde but would not offer more than Kravtsov, 2ed in 2021 for him

They may be total sweethearts over there but they are f***ing insane. Haha. A 30 year old middle six player who has never scored 70 points in a season or above .5 ppg in the playoffs and 2.5 million/yr retained and they think they are getting 2 firsts and two prime prospects. Or no retention and Kakko? GTFO. I mean I love him but that is just plain crazy.

I don't think adding another winger is going to do much for this team.

After watching the Strome-Panarin duo for a few seasons now it's apparent they either can't or don't want to play with a third skill player on that line. They want someone whose only purpose is to do all the dirty work necessary while they play pond hockey with each other. Since that's how it's apparently going to be with them for the forseeable future I think Hunt is fine in that role.

So you trade for a Reilly Smith type... then what? We're moving Kreider or Kakko to the 3rd line. No thanks.

So now this new hypothetical scoring winger is on the 3rd line with Chytil and Laf getting 10 minutes a night and no PP time. Is this player really going to produce with that kind of deployment?

The team needs a center, badly. And not just in the short term either, they need a true building block center. The team isn't going anywhere with two out of their top three centers doing nothing most games.

Damn you nailed it with this post

Ok here is what we are going to do. Trade for Gourde at 50% and Giordano for Lundkvist, Gauthier and a 1st 2023 #1. Trade NYR 2022 #2 and 2023 #4 for R. Smith.

Kreider - Zib - Kakko
Panarin - Strome - Smith
Laff - Gourde - Chytil
Goodrow - Rooney - Reaves
Hunt

Miller - Trouba
Lindgren - Fox
Giordano - Nemeth
Hajek

No

Hey, I'd never pay that, either, but why should they sell him for less? We're asking about him. They're not shopping him. And we want them to take a decent chunk of dead cap for three years to boot.

Nobody is asking about him at that price though

Any Sam Bennett type players at the deadline. Skilled grit in the top 9. Radek Faksa would be a good pickup. One of the best at winning faceoffs brings grit and some PK ability. Underrated player. 3.25 cap hit until 24-25 season. Has a 5 team no trade list.

Faska is good. We should go after Roslovic and Texier though. Younger and cheaper.

If Chychrun is available, like Friedman is suggesting, might be a good time to cash out on Lafreniere

Laf, Kakko, and Chytil have a combined 23 points in 77 games this season. I feel silly for putting all these guys in my top six over the summer.
Two of the three of those guys have played nearly zero top six minutes all year and Kakko hasn't been the same since the coach forced him onto another line like a moron.

Kakko did have a nice stretch with Panarin and Strome, after a slow start--I agree.

Laf and Chyil, however, did nothing with their opportunities in the top six, and are doing nothing on the third line to warrant promotion. I'm not convinced it's just a matter of opportunity.

They weren't much of opportunities, and I'm not a fan of Chytil either.

Patience is key, we have help coming down the road. I'd do minor moves that cost nothing of significance to make the team better short term, maybe Blackwell comes back until Kravtsov is done, it would be a nothing trade that should help now. Or deals that help later, Hayton for example. We shouldn't be offloading quality assets for rentals though.
