I don't think adding another winger is going to do much for this team.

After watching the Strome-Panarin duo for a few seasons now it's apparent they either can't or don't want to play with a third skill player on that line. They want someone whose only purpose is to do all the dirty work necessary while they play pond hockey with each other. Since that's how it's apparently going to be with them for the forseeable future I think Hunt is fine in that role.

So you trade for a Reilly Smith type... then what? We're moving Kreider or Kakko to the 3rd line. No thanks.

So now this new hypothetical scoring winger is on the 3rd line with Chytil and Laf getting 10 minutes a night and no PP time. Is this player really going to produce with that kind of deployment?

The team needs a center, badly. And not just in the short term either, they need a true building block center. The team isn't going anywhere with two out of their top three centers doing nothing most games.

agree. Finding the target is the problem. Then they have to acquire him and fit him under the cap if he’s not strictly a rental.
It’s a big part of the reason why I want strome not resigned next season.
- keeping LaF/kakko off the 1PP for the next 4-5 seasons
- having to keep a rotating door of Fast/Blackwell/Hunt types in the top 6 because those 2 need a hard worker to thrive and play D, or strictly want to play East/west pretty tic tac toe plays will drive us crazy in the long run.
If that’s the case just move Panarin up with Zibby. He has many similarities to Stromes style already and we already paid top dollar for him.
I’m not worried about Panarin without strome, he’ll stand on his own 2 feet. Maybe it will force him to play a slightly different style, and might score a bit less, but he was more then fine in Columbus under Torts playing with PLD.
There are many more reasons why we should walk away from strome, but no point typing all of them right now.
As far as just for the rest of this season goes, I think getting a center and pushing Strome to RW is the way to go.

Hunt is a much worse fit on that line than Blackwell who was a much worse fit than Fast. It matters who is in that spot.

In the summer we were worried about fat Kakko, now I introduce to you.. skinny Kakko

The Rangers need another forward who can score. I hope the rental market heats up soon.

My thoughts on this.
1. I think this team is in a tricky situation in this regard. Like say we added like a "Taylor Hall", I am not sure it would help one bit (which in itself isn't a controversial statement, how many examples haven't we seen of teams adding a scorer at the deadline and scoring less after it?).

2. In general terms, I think our problems basically boils down to us not really being speedy enough at center ice. Chytil and Ziba are only a threat if they get the puck in the right areas after they have built up speed. I've commented on this many times before, and everyone know that I wasn't a big Quinn fan, but this is the area I always gave him credit for. Quinn and we as a team did a great job getting the puck to Ziba in the right areas. This is from a post I made in March 2019.

Consequently, when we tried to play Tortorella hockey x2 under Quinn, right after TDA was tossed -- Ziba's scoring totally went down the drain. So much was made of Covid fatigue and what not.

Facts are that our transition game is a bit more straight forward under Gallant and it is showing a lot for Ziba. It´s not rocket science, Ziba starts deep in this own end, if we can get the puck up to a winger it will push the defenders back, if we then can get the puck back to Ziba who have had time to build up speed he is a formidable threat streaking down the ice against defenders who have been forced to slow down their back check a bit to get in synch with the wave of attack Ziba leads. If the winger OTOH always moves the puck up ice, we play more of a N-S game, Ziba never get the puck in these areas. And isn't that exactly what we are seeing? Most of that lines offense comes from circles down low, and they are not super effective there.

There are pro's and con's with every thing. By playing a bit more N-S we under-utilize the threat guys like Ziba and Chytil can be at center ice. But you also become a more consistent team with fewer breakdowns. Gallant is no Hitler in this regard, we are trying to find the right balance, and are err'ing on the side of caution.

3. So now we have established why especially Ziba and Chytil aren't regular threats 5 on 5. When are we dangerous?

It's not like we are a toothless team. (a) We are always dangerous when the other team has a defensive break down. When we get a odd man rush. (b) We are always able to get Panarin the puck -- Why? See, Panarin doesn't need to get the puck at high speed. He can be gliding in the wrong direction, turn up ice and set off -- and Panarin locks things up himself. (c) We are always dangerous when Fox gets the puck. (d) Our PP is dangerous.

At the bottom line, this is enough to be a good team in this league. Hence why Gallant isn't messing with things too much. 100%. Even during that ugly away stint, he knew we as a team on balance were leaning in the right direction.

4. Precisely, when are we not dangerous?

I would say that if none of the following conditions are fullfilled, we are not a dangerous team.
(a) The opposing team breaks down defensively and we get a odd man rush.
(b) Panarin has the puck.
(c) Fox has the puck.
(d) We are on the PP.

Consequently, we are very flat when our first line plays against a strong collected D. As is the case when our 3rd is on the ice.

5. What is the fix?

Lol a long story short, this is why I don't think getting a forward that can score would help much. I think we must get a player or two that can help us becoming a threat when facing a collected D. Guys that can carry the puck and create havoc by challenging Ds. Much more Vinnie Hinostroza than Phil Kessel if you get what I mean. Gourde would be perfect.

6. OTOH, is a fix really needed?

I think it is important to remember that we on the balance of things has an opportunity to win a lot more games than we don't. I see no point in "fixing" one area while making us worse in another. To make this review complete, it should be mentioned that we don't really have any line or unit that ever "cost" us games on a regular basis.

But to go all the way, I think changes must be made.

I can dislike his ability to score even if you are fan boying over him. Doesnt mean i hate him. The fact is he isn't an offensive player and shouldn't be the guy jumping over the game when we're down by one. He has 3 goals in 60 games with this team.....its not rocket science.
  • He does not have to be Mike Bossy....if he could just soften/hasten up some D and cause turnovers and be a 40 second/one shift at a time type of guy for a million a year while potting 10 goals a season...he would be a keeper . Jason Chimera had a solid NHL career and also a valuable player on some clubs . Had a couple of decent seasons but never a sniper .

We need puck hounds and puck movers. Guys like Mika are fully capable of being puck hounds... same for Chytil... it comes and goes though and that is the major issue.

Puck moving has been a major issue since ADA got the boot. Nils is not that guy, maybe it's my fault for assuming he would be. We need Jones or another puck mover. Unless there's a Kyrou available? that I'm not aware of.

When we had that amazing breakout pre-covid, we had 2 elite puck movers. 2 out of 3 pairs had potential to move the puck at elite levels. That's the foundation of everything.

Chytil Rooney Gauthier
Hunt Goodorw Reaves

Lindgren Fox

KAM/Nemeth/Lundkvist
I think it would be smart to run this so we get a better picture of what we need at the deadline.

I still think the issue the past few games has been that the team is back to not shooting enough. Zibanejad is the worst culprit of this. He needs to look in the mirror like Panarin did after the Florida game and be better. He hasnt been bad, and his overall game has been significantly better than it was last year when he was slumping, but hes playing with no confidence and needs to stop trying to pass the puck into the net.

I also genuinely think Mika's pass first mentality is having a negative affect on the young players, especially Kakko. KK is back to deferring to teammates and not being decisive with his shot and Gallant deservedly benched him for it imo. Probably better to get him back with Bread & Butter, or swap him with Gauthier, because he's has had chemistry with Chytil & Laf at different points in his career

Ok here is what we are going to do. Trade for Gourde at 50% and Giordano for Lundkvist, Gauthier and a 1st 2023 #1. Trade NYR 2022 #2 and 2023 #4 for R. Smith.

Kreider - Zib - Kakko
Panarin - Strome - Smith
Laff - Gourde - Chytil
Goodrow - Rooney - Reaves
Hunt

Miller - Trouba
Lindgren - Fox
Giordano - Nemeth
Hajek

The Rangers should not use any picks to get players if it can be avoided. They will need those younger players on ELCs. Use the existing players: Chytil, Goat, Krav, Lundqvist, Georgiev, Hajek, Reunanen.

That's a lotta hooch.

Why would Seattle make that trade?

They would have to add Chytil to get Gourde. I could see them wanting Chytil Kravtsov and a 1st for Gourde at 50% which is overpayment, but they won’t trade him for anything but an overpayment

I kind of doubt that that's what NYR are going to do... thankfully. Trading 2022 and 2023 1sts or seconds should be avoided. Esp 2023 from what scouts are saying.

This is only my take on what I believe the coaching staff sees in Goat.

I big kid who drives to the net--once or twice every game Goat goes to the outside trying to drive past the D-man. Problem is once he gets around he can't finish---YET.

He has good puck possession down deep along the boards due to his size and keeps the play moving.

He could score when he was in the AHL. Now does any of these qualities make him a top 9 forward that's the question.

I believe the staff hopes that he can and unlike Quinn are willing to give him a chance every once in a while.

We all know Goat is not Laffy or Kakko--he was a minor trade piece that the Rangers were hoping could turn into a good player.

Back to my first sentence if he does start scoring trying to drive to the outside hopefully he gains confidence to realize that he can play in the NHL.

Just my take--Kill it if you want.
