RE: Nils

He for sure needs some seasoning. Still very young for a defenseman. I think people fell in love with Twitter clips of his power play one timers and thought we were getting a ready made PMD for the 3rd pair.

I laugh out loud at the thought that people legitimately thought he should play PP1 over Fox.

Regarding Lafreniere, I think this question needs to be asked and answered.

Why have we not seen from him the traits that made him the hands down #1 pick in the 2020 draft?

What instructions has he been given in regards to what he does out on the ice.

His "happy to be here" mentality really has to change. Yes he's a youngster, but he was drafted 1st overall for a reason, he has to be more assertive on the ice. Not physically mind you, but since that was also part of his game in Jr's, it would be nice to see a bit more of that in the big show as well.

I believe there is a lot more to Lafreniere. I believe he needs to be instructed to go out and do the things he's capable of doing.

He needs to exert himself on the ice and not look to defer in every situation.

Which is why I think he looked better with Chytil and Blais.

A youngster playing with Mika and Kreider will look to defer.

Playing with the other two will allow him to be the alfa on his line which is what he needs to be to be successful for himself and the team.

Nils down Jones up.

we’ll be better. How much more I don’t know but I do know well push the puck up ice way better.
This. Schneider would also be a better option then nils at this point imo. He’s more physical mature to handle the rigors of NHL players with size and is more accustomed to playing on the smaller ice surface.
I’ve been saying this for a better part of a year and was told I was crazy cause nils is the next Fox.
I have no doubt Lundkvist will become a fine top 4. D. But at this point he needs to add muscle, weight and play a lot of heavy all situations minutes on a smaller rink.
Jones has also earned a shot to play on his offside should the chance arise. Kid worked his butt off and hand an excellent preseason

I do think the sheer lack of hockey games played due to the pandemic has affected him negatively.

If I'm correct, he went from March 8th 2020 to January 14 2021 without playing a hockey game. Nearly a full year of no hockey games.

I reckon we're going to see a lot of prospects bust/come along very slowly in the present/not too distant future due to the pandemic and are really going to gloss over the sheer lack of development caused by it.

Have we discussed the idea that maybe the fact that Jones and Schneider are in the A is actually an indication that they are more likely part of the long term plan than Nils is?

I mean, Nils is very clearly not ready for a significant role in the NHL. I think they are either keeping him up to be able to better evaluate his long term prospects from up close, potentially to showcase him, or, god forbid, they are afraid he’ll buck and bolt if assigned to Hartford.

Keeping Zac and Schneider in the A, giving them prominent roles there, keeps them growing and improving. I think the org is much more comfortable and confident in what they have in them and already know where they fit in the long term plan.

I wonder how much Sean Monahan with some retained salary would cost. I think I’d take a flyer on him. Calgary is a mess. Look at Bennett. He’s a completely different player. I blame management and Sutter.

I was hoping he'd be able to play his usual left point spot on pp2 but even that didn't happen.

I guess, to be fair to him, Trouba isn’t the best distributor from the point, and the last time I remember us having a PP2 that didn’t make my eyes bleed was 2016.

Very small sample size but I thought our pp2 looked ok while Kakko was playing. He's great on that right wall so I really think he should move up to pp1 if he's healthy, but that would leave us with an ineffective pp2 again.

Chytil, Kravtsov, Lundkvist, 1st for Eichel @ 50%

Not saying this will happen but

Chytil not developing as we hope. Still young hope he turns it around.

Kravs on the outs with the Rangers.

Nils other Dman that could take his spot

1st in an deal.

Drury gets desperate for scoring.

The last part is the problem--anyone desperate for scoring right now is not going to see any gains in that area from acquiring Eichel for several months.

But how does this help them now if the guy didn’t even get the surgery and won’t be back this year ? He’s not going to help them with scoring now.

100% agree. But I could see Drury convincing Dolan that the scoring will increase when Eichel come back.

Hell I could see Drury thinking a healthy Eichel out scoring all of the players dealt.

Again not that this is happening Buffalo is not going to retain 25% let alone 50.
