Why are you taking stats in a 42 games, 521 minute sample, and assuming it's his new normal when he's never produced remotely close to that before? If you're expecting that kind of production again you're likely going to end up disappointed.
Because he’s a 21 year old kid and that’s his most recent season long production? Am I being unfair to Hertl?

If Zibanejad has a huge season, the price tag goes up 1.5-2 mil per year.

It's only because of his inconsistency last year that we have any hope of keeping it below 8 digits a season.
I mean he's had one elite season. I think he's capable of another and probably would have last year if it wasn't for COVID f***ing him up but, this is going to have massive repercussions for the future of this team. I'd rather pay him a bit more but be sure he's the player we think he is. Rather than pay him 9m/8 years but he's like a 70 point player

If he has a mediocre season then why are we creaming our jeans to sign him? It's not gonna be like "whoa, all those reservations we had about signing this guy were true...let's still sign him"

If his price tag is 2 mil higher then he's free to go get that somewhere else. NYR will figure out a way to get another center. We can't be held hostage by this guy.

So how does that tell you it's remotely sustainable?

He scored 2.59 pts/60 last year.

In 19-20 the following players were relatively young, scored 2.2+ points/60, and did not have an extension history of being a great 5v5 scorer (per my subjective definition of not elite) 500+ mins at 5v5:

Kubalik: 2.59
Burakovsky: 2.55
Laughton 2.53
Thomas 2.46
Mikheyev 2.44
Kahun 2.43
Sanford: 2.34
Konecny 2.32
Grimaldi 2.31
D. Strome 2.3
Gusev 2.29
Bratt 2.21

An average of 2.40

What was their pts/60 in 20-21?

Kubalik: 1.82
Burakovsky: 2.54
Laughton 1.41
Thomas 1.89
Mikheyev 1.29
Kahun 1.22
Sanford: 1.05
Konecny 1.94
Grimaldi 1.43
D. Strome 1.25
Gusev 0.85
Bratt 1.88

An average of 1.58.

Every single one of them saw their production drop next year. All of them, other than Burakovsky, by a substantial margin. So again, why are you assuming one outlier year is meaningful at all?

Zib is not worth $500K less in AAV then Barkov and approx $2MM more then Couturier. He's somewhere between the two.

I think $8.5MM is that number.
He's an elite goal scoring center. He will get paid more than 8.5. 8.5 is a dream scenario hometown discount

It would make sense for Drury to wait on Barkov extension... have something to work off of.

Mika's contract will be somewhat similar to Barkov's.. structure wise. I can tolerate 7 years, with the first 5 with a NMC. Nearly all signing bonuses, only $1M salary.

I actually like the idea of moving Kreider to the third line better than playing him on the right. I expect the top 9 all should get good playing time. Let Kreider, who is inconsistent anyway, throw his weight around with Chytil on a punishing third line.

If Zib gets anywhere close to 10 we won't really have chances signing anyone good to 2C. Then we will have to bet on Chytil or go the Draft route.

Have to agree to disagree. Barkov is a tier up from Zib. Zib had 200 goals in 604 games (.33 gpg). Barkov has 181 goals in 529 games (.34 gpg). So if Zib is considered an elite goal scorer, so would Barkov.

Add that Barkov is a more complete player not to mention his Selke trophy. He's also 3 years or so younger.

Rangers should not pay Zib over $8.5-8.75MM

I agree. The cap should basically not apply to drafted players, or only a small portion of drafted player salary should apply.

So Crosby, Malkin, Letang, and Fleury wouldn’t have counted against Pitts salary cap? They might be able to freshen the cap rules but this ain’t it.
