Brooks mentioned ‘pre-tampering’, but that cannot really be a problem can it? You must be allowed to discuss the future with a player. Have you guys heard about pre-tampering being a thing in any of the other major sports in the US?

Like I can imagine that it’s possible to create hypothetical situations that could be a bit questionable, but there can of course not be a general rule where a team can not express long term interest in a player.

I'm not 100% on the exact wording of the CBA but basically you're not allowed to talk about a player's plans beyond the period in which you hold their rights. So you cannot discuss what Zucc or Hayes want to do as of the start of the free agency period because we do not hold their rights as of July 1st and beyond.

Now it would be incredibly difficult to prove that something like this occurred, but ethically that would obviously be heavily frowned upon. Plus if the league looked into it and was able to prove it because of a stray email or text there would be penalties involved.

At 2013 the PA had used the inflator every year. Now it’s rolled back to like a %. Those predictions were basically only off by those 5%.
You're right.. For some reason I thought the expansion was next year

Couldnt they discuss what it would take to resign him in New York and agree on a number and term but then trade him at the deadline, then go back to him when he is ufa with the contract and sign him.

Kreider, Chytil and Kravstov are 3/4ths of the top6. Seeing a player like Zucc come back next year solidifies the top6 and we have time to find another.

We could feasibly get another top6 forward this draft.
That’s if Zucc isn’t gone in a couple weeks and if kreider isn’t gone a year from now...

They could agree to a number and term today and not sign a contract, sure. They just can't guarantee or even imply that the contract offer would still be valid as of July 1st.

There's plenty of ways to skirt the rule, it's just highly unethical. They can discuss the contract now and the player can muse about how he wants to be a life long Ranger and it's a wink wink kind of situation, but it's poor form by both parties ethically because theoretically all teams are supposed to have an even shot at signing a free agent and the team acquiring him should have a fair shot at extending him if they want to.

It's talked about far more often then it actually happens, but at least four by my count:
Olli Jokinen (CGY -> NYR -> CGY)
Antoine Vermette (ARI -> CHI -> ARI)
Tomas Plekanec (MTL -> TOR -> MTL)
Matt Moulson (BUF -> MIN -> BUF)
Lmao completely forgot Olli Jokinen was once a Ranger

I really think we see at least one guy brought in who can handle himself physically if McQuaid is dealt. Watching the Bruins game last night, even with McQuaid in the line-up the team is somewhat soft. I’m not recommending going out and bringing in a McLeod-type but finding a couple of guys who don’t mind getting their nose dirty or stick up for teammates isn’t a bad thing. Playing Smith every game will help. Call up Beleskey for the 4th line. BBKers mentioned Kassian as a cap dump. He’d be a decent addition for this year and next.

Considering the giant favour to Tampa that that'd be, I sure hope they try to get a little more than that.

Knowing how Yzerman always rips Gorton off, we will take Callahan off there hands, give them their guaranteed first back and keep it as a 2nd instead, plus we will give them our first this year and next year. That is how that trade would go down. JG will say thank you for allowing us to help you out again.

Good thing Steevie Y isn't the gm anymore.
Also lol are we still having discussions about the McDonagh trade being bad a year later?

From looking in the West, one of the best outcomes would be for all of these teams like Chicago, Edmonton, Arizona, Minnesota, St Louis, Vancouver, Colorado and Dallas to stay tightly clumped together. It shouldn’t allow any of them to sell and perhaps someone gets aggressive thinking they are trending upwards and really want to make the playoffs.

29 games to go...still waiting for the NYR to drop in the standings.

Sitting in the 12th (!) pick slot right now.

Hard not to be pessimistic and not see yet another generation without elite talent.
