The NHL teams don't use their cap space to pick up assets. The Nets GM Sean Marks manufactured draft picks by taking on contracts. He acquired a 1st & 2nd from Toronto to assume DeMarre Carroll's contract. Marks also acquired a 1st & 2nd from Denver to assume Kenneth Faried's contract.

The Rangers have the cap space to absorb a contract for assets & they have an in with TB's 1st in 2019. TB needs space to re-sign Point & Callahan's $5.8M cap # will go a long way to paying Point who should get a huge deal. All of the young group II's in the NHL are getting paid huge dollars. Kucherov got $9.5M. Point will get that with no state income tax in Florida.

Callahan is TB's 13th forward. They told him he will be a healthy scratch more than he plays. It's only for one more season. $4.7M salary. TB agrees to drop the conditional 1st/2nd round pick in 2019 to a guaranteed 1st in 2019 & TB sends the Rangers a 2nd round pick in 2020 or 2021 to complete the McDonagh/Miller trade. The Rangers take on Callahan through 2019-20. The cap is going up to $83M. Supposedly. $3.5m bump. Callahan has a 16 team trade list. Joe Smith of The Athletic reported last summer that Callahan has the Rangers on his list. TB can trade him to the Rangers.

The Callahan space & cap increase basically pays Point. The Rangers get a 1st from TB no matter what happens & they get a 2nd. Callahan provides veteran leadership & experience to a much younger Ranger team next season. The Rangers can flip him at the 2020 trading deadline.

I personally spoke with Igor Eronko, had him on my radio show and he had him coming here too. It wasn’t just Brooks that was wrong. I know it’s a tongue in cheek type comment, but I think a lot of that had to do with the direction of the team. If Kovalchuk knew LA was in for the nosedive they’ve taken, I think he would have signed with the Rangers, all things equal.

The Rangers were NOT giving Kovalsuck a 3 year 35 plus contract.

I see Zucc getting 4years $5-ish with a full NMC... the trade-off
This would be good for Zuccarello, his agent and no one else. He gets an absurd amount of cash over an insane length of time and he gets full protection in the likely event he drops off. If that's the cost for assuming the gamble of his undersized body breaking down before he is 37, he can't get that elsewhere.

I'm glad he didn't and didn't want him to. It wasn't a fit for him or the NYR.

A four year deal would take him to age 35, not 37. He'll get that term and coin, I'd bet, or close to it anywhere in the league.

What Larry actually wrote:

"Now, listen. Nothing would be set in stone. No promises have been made. The idea is germinating as the opportunity presents itself. Indeed, general manager Jeff Gorton and his lieutenants must steer clear of any suggestion of pre-tampering. And this type of approach would be fraught with risk, for there is always the possibility that no matter how often Zuccarello and Hayes pledge their loyalty to Broadway, they could, A) fall in love with their new environs once traded and decide to re-up with their new teams; or, B) be overwhelmed with offers the Rangers might not be able to (or care to) match when they become free agents."

Not even remotely close to being "confirmed". It's Uncle Larry speculating. And Uncle Larry has been wrong plenty.

Jeez...read the entire article.

"But that might not signal the end of either’s story in New York. What’s more, Zuccarello’s resurgence in which he has played his finest and sharpest hockey since 2016-17 has created the very real possibility that the organization could not only bring Zuccarello back as a free agent, but award him the captaincy upon signing him to a multi-year contract."

I read the whole article. It's speculation, pure and simple. And, FWIW, I'm all for Zooks being on the team next year. Love the guy, but if he's traded instead of signed it's a risk.

It's more than speculative, brooks straight up said that the team is considering trading Hayes/Zucc and bringing them back.

.... But considering doesn't mean that they're going to do it. They could just as easily (if not more easily) say yeah, we thought about it and we're going in a different direction, which they should.

He's said that before about other players and it amounted to nothing. Of course they're considering them as UFA's - just like 29 other teams are. I'm sure every team in the NHL that's worth a hill of beans has scouting on any/all upcoming UFA's. They'd be fools not to.

Yeah, I flipped the 4 and 5s, he'll finish his last season just shy of 36. The fact he will get the money is not a confirmation that it's a smart deal. It's a pass for me.

Considering the giant favour to Tampa that that'd be, I sure hope they try to get a little more than that.

There's a reason why Zucc started to play like a god after having a meeting with the management...

At least you shouldn't be surprised if this happens, that he's back next season, probably as captain.

So he held the team hostage and tanked his value until he got what he wanted? He can turn it on and off, but only put forth the effort when management finally stroked his ego by promising a new contract. Captain material to some, I call it unprofessional and selfish.

That would be pretty concerning if the Rangers were offering Kovalchuk a plus 35, 3 year contract.

I'm not sure if I buy, actually more accurately, I'm not sure I want to believe that the Rangers were going anywhere near that.

I'd buy they were offering a one year bonus laden short on clauses contract so they could maybe sell him at the deadline as a pure rental.

I may even reluctantly entertain they may have gone two years if he had almost no clauses, and had bonus money paying for most of the total salary so he could be traded as a high cap hit low real money owed asset. Or have the contract terminated in some fashion after he received most of the real money in it.

Yet the contract the Kings gave him is just so far out of what the Rangers should have been thinking, if they were really considering anything similar it gives me some doubts about what they really were/are thinking.

Could that reason not be "If you have any hope of getting a contract from ANY team next season, stop moping and playing terribly?"

No I think he was very disappointed because he didn't hear anything about their future plans for him. He's a very emotional guy, and his worries got to him. Then he told us what was wrong in a Brooks interview, the management reacted and called him in for a meeting.
