I think we can write off COL as a premium buyer. They are closer to the Rangers in the standings, and it doesn't make any sense for them to make a big push. Their window will expand the next two years. Now is not the time.

I'd peg the contenders for Hayes down to WPG and BOS as the front runners.
Colorado has warts but they have a ton of elite talent, including the guy that was robbed of the Hart last season. The problem is they are in the hardest division in the NHL. Their farm isnt good so if they want to try to contend, they need to be buyers

Don’t sleep on Dallas. They have been rising in the standings despite a pronounced lack of secondary scoring. Their owner is a bit of a wild card. We don’t get to see the scouting lists at every NHL game or lower levels.

I’m not as bullish about the Avs window expanding naturally, although I’m not saying that acquiring a rental is the right move. They’re really at the point the Rangers were at when they signed Richards.

Time to assess what the team is missing and make a bold move to address it. Like I said, that doesn’t mean acquiring a rental.

It depends for the Avs. They are probably thinking not to make a huge splash because they know they are going to likely get one of Hughes or Kakko unless something drastic happens. Especially if they keep dropping in the standings.

They would have a forward core of Rantanen, MacKinnon, Landeskog and Hughes/Kakko. They need some more depth on D. They have Makar. Barrie has been putting up point but EJ turns 31 in March.

Goaltending is another major issue for them Varlamov and Gruber havent been good this year.

Could they make a move for someone with some term left? Sure but not sure they head in that direction.

I can see them pressing for Bobrosvsky.

Was just watching Sportsnet headlines. They say Nashville could be interested in two front line players. Hayes and Zucc for them?

I doubt they go in the same deal but I could see Zucc plus one of our other forwards (Names/Vesey/Strome/Fast/Buch)

Arizona will be looking to make a hockey trade. They have really been devastated by injuries. The owners here desperately want to make the playoffs for the home gates. They will be looking for reasonably priced forwards, preferably with term. Kreider and Hayes are out of their price range but they might be a destination for some second tier pieces.

Of course, the Rangers have something for everyone.

I had been told they might be players for Duchesne but that was later walked back.

They need help on the defensive side of the puck beyond goaltending. Makar and Hughes/Kakko aren’t going to help them short term.

Also, Sakic of all people knows better than to count on high odds to get a top-3 draft pick.

I agree, but the issue is that they are spend-thrifty in the trade market. They're in a good spot cap wise next year, and that acquisition you're talking about could very well be a couple of solid UFAs, or bailing a team out that's cap strapped. That's more of their MO. Unlike a EDM/ARI/OTT, Colorado can attract free agents. But only if they are willing to pay full market value. It's not a state like FLA/TEN/TX/NV where they can get the tax advantaged discount.

And I don't think they will contend for the next two seasons. They will need to wait until there is turnover with WPG and NSH. The latter is in great position with the cap, but age might not favor some of their players.

It's funny I frequent a business owned by Gagliardi, and am there a number of times a year. Everytime I mention the Stars, there is a sense that they really want to have a run. Dallas is spending a ton of money this year, more than most teams in the league, and more than several contenders. That comes with expectations.

If it weren't for Heiskanen, and Bayreuther, and Bishop standing on his head, the Stars would be in an unpalatable situation.

It'll be interesting to see just how many veterans get dealt out of NY in the upcoming weeks. I can see a really strong market not only for the UFAs in Hayes, Zucc, and McQuaid, but also guys like Kreider and Fast. Still feel like the best case for Gorton is to play the Jets and Preds against each other. Hayes goes to Winnipeg and drives up the price for Kreider to Nashville.

If this team lost Hayes, Kreider, and Zucc at the TDL they'd fall from the sky pretty quickly. Kreider's the only guy I see returning a roster player from that group.

You say that, but I don't think anyone on their current roster was acquired in free agency. I can't remember that last impactful UFA that acquired. There is a deep history of contract stalemates, players lost through free agency and a whole lot of nothing in the way of acquisitions.

It's not Siberia by any means but something is up and it goes beyond the current regime.

Soderberg and Calvert. Cole on D.

They haven't gone big game hunting so much of late via UFA. They've kind of sucked thus the hold back.

Kerfoot and Cole were free agents. Though Kerfoot wasn’t your standard UFA.

They traded for Soderberg’s rights in late June to sign him.

Ottawa can have he worst record in the league in the Avs will still most likely not get Hughes or Kakko

The time to trade for Roslovic was last year when he wasn’t a full time NHL player

Now that he’s on the roster he won’t get moved.

Winnipeg has too many wingers. If they were looking for a D like McQuaid, I’d love to try and get Appleton from them. Kid won’t have a spot

Nashville I don’t know what I’d like from them. Fabbro is obvious but why move him? Tolvanen is another one but he’s underwhelmed this year. He’ll eventually figure it out though.

Zucc for Tolvanen+ something small I could get behind. Not sure they do it though

This with Soderberg. Like Yandle for Florida.

I guess my point was there appears to be frugality or stubbornness coupled with some other factor that makes them underwhelming in free agency. They can plan to use that cap on July 1 but we shall see.

Good though on Dallas. One additional piece...the Rangers have room to help with short term cap relief. That could be an added incentive for a deal.

I wish for Fabbro or Tolvanen but I doubt they give either up. They are gonna offer their 1st around plus an ok prospect

I could definitely see zucc coming back just because he loves this organization enough to give them a discount...Hayes is a goner.

I don't think him being on the roster really affects this moving him at all. When Ehlers was/is healthy he was a 4th liner playing 7-8 mins a game. Hardly a key piece of their current team. Since he got moved up into Ehlers spot on the 2nd line he has been pretty bad outside of last game.

You're not getting Roslovic/Vesalainen on top of a 1st from WPG for Hayes. Those are A Prospects/Players.

It would be a lesser prospect like an Erik Foley that STL got from WPG for Stastny.
