Because bright lights of broadway, and original six, and tradition, and NYR life style......

Its totally not because we can back up the brinks truck unlike any other team

do not kid yourself.

he wants to win.

if so, he won't get off at this stop. hell keep going.... as he should. for 10-12 mil. hes doing us a favor.

not sure why we would want him anyway if we apply the same standard we use for hayes and kreider.

in 3-5 yrs those guys will be 30 too.

Who is really available:
Simmonds
Zuccarello
Hayes
Dzingel
Duchene (maybe)
Stone (maybe)

Panarin (maybe)
Nyquist
Burakovsky (not a rental)
Carter (maybe)
Ferland (I think Carolina would prefer to re-sign him)
Boyle (would they actually move him or just try to re-sign him?)
Johansson

This assumes guys like Kreider aren't actually moved with term left on their deals.

I don't think Carter moves at the deadline.

I REALLY don't think Columbus trades Panarin.

I REALLY think at least one of Stone/Duchene re-sign in Ottawa.
Yeah everything is so up in the air now. Ottawa really will set or not set the tone. I feel like they have to sign either one or both of Duchene/ Stone. I hope they do.

I've never found "attitude problems" and "questionable work ethic" to be in any real way directly related. Sometimes they are, certainly. But there are also toxic hard workers and well loved schleps and everything in between. I also question how much the latter really affects anything in the locker room since how a fan or a coach views a player is not always consistent with how his fellow teammates view him.

For example we as fans, and Colin Campbell and Mike Keenan as coaches, might have wanted to strangle Kovalev for his floating and disappearing. But the guys he played with, especially Messier and Graves, loved him and loved playing with him. Scratching him in favor of a significantly less effective but harder working player would probably not have had a positive effect in the locker room or on the ice.

So I am not really sure how Buch playing or being scratched will affect the team off the ice. There seems to be a lot of credence given to the guesswork that Buchnevich playing will somehow hurt the younger players, without any real indication that's the truth. Honestly I think the other side of that coin, that maybe benching Buch could have an adverse on both rookies and veterans because (despite rebuilding) they still care about scoring goals and winning games due to it directly affecting their paycheck, is just as likely.

Personally I think neither of the above situations are likely because the effect these kinds of things have on the locker room how other players behave is absurdly overstated. But who knows.

In the end I just want them to make decisions that work towards improving the team on the ice, and for that to be the overriding priority, always. If that means waiving Buch tomorrow, do it. But if that means playing Buch, even if its only so they can increase his value in a trade (he certainly wouldn't be the first underwhelming player showcased) then do that. Just make sure the teams priorities, and managing assets should always be higher than managing sensibilities, are where they need to be.

(apologies in advance, I started this reply about 6 hours ago at work and have not checked how this conversation has progressed, so if you have already had this discussion, sorry)

I agree with almost everything you said here in a more traditional sense - and what I mean by that is if this team was in a different place, competing with a veteran core and a veteran coach, I'd agree with it 100%. But they're not, and that makes this situation more tenuous. This is a young team with a rookie coach and, by all accounts, Buchnevich seems to be overtly ignoring.....something....coming from Quinn and it's really unacceptable at this stage. At least that's my opinion. Anyway, I keep harping on this for 2 seasons:

1. Buchnevich is not offensively talented enough to be pulling something like that. You brought up Kovalev before. That guy was literally one of the most talented players I've ever seen from an offensive standpoint. My mouth would be completely shut if Buchnevich had even a hint of that type of talent in him.

2. I just don't understand what's stopping him from listening to the coach. It seems like a situation that's so avoidable. All he needs to do is engage himself more. It seems so simple, and it aggravates me when a player can't pull himself together to do such a thing at this level.

Obviously there isn’t a current one but it hasn’t stopped that from being the ask. Point being, he’ll get more than $9.5M IMO.
It just seems like you're using very different criteria to determine what Kreider will get compared to what Panarin will get.

In this case, because Panarin is going to UFA and Kreider is still a year out you, can’t use the same criteria. Panarin has an ask, can only speculate on Kreider.

Should Gorton choose, and dependent on his moves at this deadline, the Rangers very well may begin to upswing next year. They would need to have a few pieces fall into place but he could conceivably have the cap space to make some changes in the off-season.

I'm not saying I want him to throw around money but if they can find a way to trade Smith and Shattenkirk and they move out Krieder/Zuccarello/Hayes at this deadline they should have A LOT of cap space.

I also get the sense that Namestnikov may be traded at the deadline in which case there is another $4m in cap space.

Yes that`s my view too - no point keeping Namestnikov playing a 3rd line role, because he is harmless in the top 6 and continue to struggle to be productive here. So that 4 mil $ cap hit need to go this summer in my opinion. Besides we have Lias, Chytil, Howden, probably forgot someone who can center that 3rd line beginning of the next season on ELC.

And if we can`t sigh Panarin or Matt Duchene based on many reasons since there are many teams who want them both based on depth reasons - I would consider to resign Zucc even after we dealt him at TDL. We would still be a bottom table team next season if those players you mentioned are moved for future without signing of Panarin. And I`m still not sold to sign a big name players to accellerate the whole rebuild process even it will be some rough years drafting in the bottom. And no doubts that interest will take a hit as well concerning ticket sale in the next couple of years, but it depends on the draft lottery this summer. But we should not worry about it with a city above 12 mil. citizen and so many movie stars visiting MSG! Besides when Rangers hit in the draft the interest will quickly flourish. :)

This may be crazy, but the idea of the Jets trading Laine could make sense. Another guy that, if he isn't scoring, he isn't doing much. Was in line for a huge pay day, and while people speculate that he will take a bridge deal in the $7m-8m range, that might not be money well spent on a capped out team with other obligations.

Just thinking outside the box, but if Winnipeg moved him for a cheaper, middle 6 center and an affordable yet dependable d, (plus I would imagine), they could be well served. One less, huge contract due next year.

I'm a fan of Laine but he might be one of those great players that don't help you win. At least not at this stage of his career. Like Ovechkin and Kessel in the early years. It's admittedly far fetched but I figured I'd put it out there.

Hayes is sort of like what Holik was even for a while in NJ--a well-known guy with some flash but really just consistent two-way play. You COULD sell him as a 1B center, he's really a middle-six player going really strong.

Do people really get the sense that Kreider is some sort of veteran leader for this team? I'm not so sure. What I do know is we have a pretty good idea of what kind of player he is and he's going to get overpaid in about 16 months. Provided where the Rangers are, they should be shopping him heavily.

Darren Dreger was on Pierre LeBrun's & Scott Burnside's podcast today. Dreger mentioned the Rangers having five players on the TSN trade list. Hayes. Zuccarello. McQuaid. Kreider. Namestnikov. Dreger thinks Gorton has a strong appetite to trade if not all of them but as many as he can. Dreger said Gorton will need to move some of those players before the deadline because you can't make every deal at the deadline. Trading Kreider would be a significant deal. He was referring to an earlier discussion in the podcast.

It's a sellers market because there aren't many declared sellers. The playoff race in the west is wide open. Some of the non-playoff teams in the east don't have much to sell.

At one point, the Insider was asked which of the Calgary Flames or Winnipeg Jets he felt would make “a splashy move, and maybe gives up a first-round pick, something like that, to try and put them over the top this spring.”

“I think both Brad Treliving and Kevin Cheveldayoff make a splashy move,” replied LeBrun. “So I’m not even picking one, I think they both are. Cheveldayoff already showed us last spring in giving up a first for Paul Stastny that he understands his team is all-in.

“It wouldn’t surprise me, quite frankly - and I don’t want to be radioed here, but - if the Senators can’t re-sign Matt Duchene, it wouldn’t surprise me if Winnipeg phoned. But at the same time, I think Winnipeg is going to phone on all the rental forwards that are out there.

Would be wild if they traded all of them.

Laine had a good November when he had a whopping 18 goals. Including 5 in one game.

The rest of the years he has totaled 7 goals. He does little for the Jets when he does not score.

October: 3 goals, 2 assists – 12 games
November: 18 goals, 1 assist – 12 games
December: 3 goals, 4 assists – 15 games
January (so far): 1 goal, 2 assists – 11 games
