1st big shoe to drop. 1st and 2 2nds for Muzzin. Both 2nd rounders are progressing very well.

Muzzin is a Babcock favorite. Coached him on Team Canada.

Hey, I got this Rolex as a gift from a friend. I wore it every day for the last 4 years, but I am ready to get a new watch. I took great care of it and the care I put into it has actually made it nicer over the years. It originally cost 10K. Actually, you know what?, you can have it because I got it for free.

The above would be applicable if we don't sign or trade Hayes and/or Vesey and let them walk as UFA's. But, I'll take the Rolex.

The arms race has officially begun

This is the best part. It forces the market to move, and that means that bidding doesn't have to wait until the last second.

IMO, if a team meets the Rangers price on their trade assets, you pull the trigger. I don't want to see what happened last year when they couldn't pull another deal together at the trade deadline because they were working on the McDonagh deal.

With Muzzin making 4 mill next season, Toronto's cap room has got to give somewhere

EDIT: Hainsey and Gardiner pending UFAs. I suppose if one or both are moved/not retained, Muzzin's cap hit next season is nullified

I really thought we would see more deals today anyways. Teams don't want to wait for the players to continue playing and possibly get hurt. Teams know if they will be buyers for the most part

I'd like to see them pry away Vesalainen. He'd be able to step into our middle six next year and become part of that future core. They really do have too many wingers ready to make it but being pushed down for the foreseeable future with vets and Connor, Laine.

I'd love to see Vesalainen in our system, but I don't think that's at all realistic for Hayes.

I think we'll see more. From everything I know, there's going to be an arms race in the east. I fully expect to see more trades trickle in as the next few weeks go along. 5 serious buyers out west, potentially 9 in the east.

Not sure about this trade for the Leafs. Muzzin is good but the Leafs really needed a RHD. From what I've seen Hjalmarsson is the only defenseman in the league capable of playing on his off side long-term. It worked briefly for TJ Brodie but then he regressed in that role. Trying to put Muzzin on the top pair with Rielly may just end in disaster but having him on the 2nd pairing doesn't do much good. They already have Rielly/Gardiner/Dermott on the left side. They didn't need a LHD. Gardiner is a FA after the year maybe they can deal him for a comparable RHD to a team that may want to sign him.

Yeah I'm not in love with this deal for the Leafs. And only a year and a quarter

Chevy isn't in the business of trading ELC assets that can play a role on his team. Even Appleton might be a stretch.

I would love to see one of their premier prospects on the Rangers, because WPG knows how to draft. But if you are getting contributing pieces, then you take it with a pick and a smile on your face. If the trade offer is Poolman, Appleton, & 1st. Odds are that all 3 of those pieces might be on your roster in 3 years.... and that is outstanding for a rental.

Nogier got a scouting look-see the last two years. They've got other AHL contributors.

But Samberg, Vesalainen, Roslovic-> That's not going to happen.

It's funny, Roslovic is really well thought of now, but back in his draft year, he was a pretty far reach over the concensus. I've modeled some aggregated draft rankings in my spare time, and Jack was one of the few that bumped up over 10 spots across the board.

It's no Ninnimaki, but usually you don't see that too often. Ty Dellandrea was another one last year.

He hasn't been in that mode historically, but he also hasn't been facing down such a potentially tumultuous summer before. Three big-time RFAs to sign, one of whom is likely going to finally be traded. No C to play consistently with your franchise winger in Laine.

I think getting Appleton and a first for Hayes would be a home run, but probably isn't in the cards.

So that Muzzin deal leaves the Leafs with 13 players under contract for next season with just over $19M to spend and Matthews, Marner, and Kapanen to sign up front. Would guess that this means Gardiner is going to be an "own rental" or he'll get dealt somewhere before the deadline and Willy Nylander shouldn't put much stock in that quote from Dubas about not trading him.
