So that Muzzin deal leaves the Leafs with 13 players under contract for next season with just over $19M to spend and Matthews, Marner, and Kapanen to sign up front. Would guess that this means Gardiner is going to be an "own rental" or he'll get dealt somewhere before the deadline and Willy Nylander shouldn't put much stock in that quote from Dubas about not trading him.

With the cap going up, it will be $23M. They can also trade Marleau who is only owed $1M post signing bonus. They are screwed on defense, unless Rosen is going to knock it out of the park, or Sandin/Lilegren take steps.

Marleau has a NMC. Good luck trying to get him to waive it as its likely his final year in the NHL.

Am I the only one who thinks this is @RangerBoy when he posts about the rebuild?:sarcasm:

True, I did forget about the cap increasing. Still, you gotta figure that Marner and Matthews are eating at least $18M of that, and that's only if they take a pretty team friendly deal. Marleau will also have to accept a trade somewhere given his NMC. Not sure if he will.

Been saying this all year... waiting to trade screws us long term for no reason other than to sell seats

I don't think its a ticket thing because it honestly has little to no impact, they've already sold most of their seats for the season (whether or not those seats are filled, different story.)

I think the wait is a combo of 2 things....

1. JG loves to take his time, this can work for or against him.
2. I think JG wants to give this group every chance possible to get back into the playoff picture, as unlikely as it may be.

#2 is annoying, but its probably mostly #1.

Hopefully this Muzzin trade starts it all, Zucc needs to go ASAP. There’s quite a few forwards available at the TDL and Zucc won’t keep this hot for long. At the TDL, Zucc is an after thought, I don’t think he’s any teams important “get” and I’m still worried he won’t fetch a 1st because he’s “small” and hasn’t performed amazing in the playoffs.
Part of me still believes Zucc’s “infection” is a cover for a trade soon. Maybe I’m just hoping but it seems kinda fishy, aren’t the Rangers typically very broad when it comes to announcing injuries?
Trading Zucc ASAP is a must-do, especially to a desperate team like Dallas. Nill is on the hot seat lately with his terrible drafting lately and his inability to add depth to Seguin/Benn/Radulov/Klingberg
If I were Gorton I’m calling Nill, fast.

On the flip side, Hayes should be dealt at the TDL

Not sure about this trade for the Leafs. Muzzin is good but the Leafs really needed a RHD. From what I've seen Hjalmarsson is the only defenseman in the league capable of playing on his off side long-term. It worked briefly for TJ Brodie but then he regressed in that role. Trying to put Muzzin on the top pair with Rielly may just end in disaster but having him on the 2nd pairing doesn't do much good. They already have Rielly/Gardiner/Dermott on the left side. They didn't need a LHD. Gardiner is a FA after the year maybe they can deal him for a comparable RHD to a team that may want to sign him.
Smith plays RD

Yes they will be, but how are they going to round out their roster with $23MM in cap space, with $18-20MM going to 2 players and 9 positions to fill? (Without somehow ditching Marleau's salary)
Letting the Hainsey and Marincin contracts expire would nullify the Muzzin cap hit.

I'd be surprised if there weren't a number of teams sniffing around Hayes and hoping Gorton's price comes down. That's not really the sort of deal that gets done weeks ahead of the deadline. That's a deal that comes down to the wire with a call for best and final 15 minutes before the bell goes off.

I think if the Rangers make a deal ahead of the deadline it'll be a minor one.

I thought Marleau had a NMC?

He does. And he can probably play another year without much issue. Legs are still there, but players can be convinced to waive their NMCs.

Has been done before, they can't buy him out, but it's not out of the realm of possibility.

Hey, they might eat close to $22M between them.

Does he have real value?

Yeah. UFA and he's going to slot in as a 4th line PK option for someone. 4th round pick would be adequate.

Drury is scouting the game.

Briere runs the ECHL team in Maine. The Rangers supply them with players.

Are we even sure that they're scouting the for possible trades?

I guess its not typical that the AGM shows up for any other reason but they play the Flyers tomorrow and the Jets in a few weeks.

On Monday, Panarin's agent Daniel Milstein put out a statement: "We have informed the team that we are willing to discuss Artemi's future after the season. Our priority now is to focus on the rest of the season, trying to win a Stanley Cup for the CBJ & their fans. No additional comments will be made."

He’ll be in a Rangers sweater next year.
