perhaps but really i think derek stepan was always fairly pedestrian. bland and slow.

as good as he supposedly was, he left me wanting more and usually shaking my head with his inability to score slam dunk goals and always looking like he was skating in mud.

i can admit i was never a huge fan and when he was dealt is wasnt upset in the least.

And Kreider never left you wanting for more when the Rangers were actually competitive? He was go invisible for weeks on end.

I think what's more amazing than ever in today's NHL is the amount of players who absolutely fall off a cliff.

Take Spooner for example, yeah he was flawed. And everyone knew he was one of those guys who always teased his talent. But you could at least somewhat figure that he'd post his 35-40 points, slide around a little, drive you nuts with consistency, but chip in some points.

It's not like we're talking about a guy in his mid-30s whose best days are clearly behind him. You get that.

Bouncing around a lot has to be tough. Right conditions for a player as far as coaching is concerned is a huge factor. He looked great under AV. I feel for him.

The only reason we never won the finals was because our 6 defensemen had 6 legs and arms between them, we were battered and bruised and still managed to put up a fight. Having high end clutch guys like Richard's and St.Louis were key to us getting there even if they did misuse Richards late in the playoffs. That trade for Callahan was a big part of making it there and Tampa basically got a bad contract in Callahan and Cirelli(someone we might not have picked as they had traded our pick for two later picks). The trade worked out for everyone minus the cap killing contract Callahan has. We need that high end guy like Panarin if we want to have success.

And I certainly get that.

I could understand a decline, maybe even a steep decline. So instead of scoring at 50 point pace, maybe it's more like 30-35. But 5 points in 41 games? That's pretty surprising for me.

You assume some guys are going to have bad contracts, but they can still serve a role in the NHL. You generally don't expect everything to disappear so quickly.

Part of me wonders if the owners are going to look for some kind of compromise on this in an upcoming labor agreement. Maybe one compliance over a two year period, or some kind of provision. Because it's happening quite a bit around the league.

oh definitely. more so actually. with his size and speed, he should be dominant every game rather than a few shifts here and there.

neither guy was consistent enough production wise. both were prone to long stretches of irrelevance.

of the two, i prefer CK and his upside over stepan and his limited upside even though stepan may have contributed more overall.

Rangers NEED a top 3 pick this year. What a game changer that would be. We're due for a high draft pick.

RANGERS HAVEN'T HAD A TOP 3 PICK SINCE BRAD PARK!

Shocker. A player who wants to maximize his bottom line.

Callahan continued to play hard, despite the hoopla. The MSL trade was awful. They could have peddled Callahan and not given up a fortune for him.
I guess it just depends whether you’re a Rangers fan or a Callahan fan. Can’t be both after his selfish move.

If you're asking me who I want over the next 5 years, it's Kreider. I think he ages better with his physical tools. In saying that, over the last 5 years, it's Stepan, pretty easily.

Highest paid AHL players at the moment:

Scott Darling: 4.75m
Ryan Spooner: 4m
Matt Beleskey: 4m
Sam Gagner: 3.5m
Matt Moulson: 3m
Mike Condon: 2.5m
Jan Rutta: 2.25m
David Schlemko: 1.85m

That's Crazy. We could prob also name 10 or more with contracts that teams cant do anything about.

It might be hyperbole from me but the draft lottery night has the potential to be one of the most disasterous nights in franchise history with the Devils and Flyers in contention for a top pick. One of them winning the lottery and us being out of the top 5 because we can't stop scooping up OTL and SOW wins would be devestating.

To be completely honest its really hard to watch the games this season because the entire fate of the franchise comes down to some lottery balls.

I was 100 percent against the tank before the season and I stand by that because I wasn't going to give up before games were played but watching this team play absolutely piss poor on a nighly basis combined with seeing almost nothing from our prospects has made watching this team steal points very very frustrating.

Sometimes I really wonder how much of this is about off-season training. I don't mean guys who don't train enough, I mean guys who concentrate on things that may hinder some of their overall game. For example, too much heavy squats for leg strength but not enough agility for quicker feet could have a negative effect on certain players, etc.

Because Spooner especially, should be able to put up 35-40 points pretty easily with his skillset.

Im fascinated by Phil Kessel. Love the spitting chicklets piece on him recently. Guys are all hitting the bike, Phil is pedaling like the girl in the Progressive insurance commercial..."Be quiet, Im blasting my quads"

I prob average 65 games watched a year since I moved to buffalo in 2003. This year I've watched less than 10 full games. I can't root for my team to lose. So I hope they lose and the prospects play well and check in on the game recaps and such. I'm right with ya, shitty feeling.

I however really feel like we're due for some epic Hockey God Influence this year! Top 3 here we come!

Kessel is uber-talented. People almost forget that there was a time he was considered a potential first-overall pick. But the conditioning aspect has always been a source of some debate.

If he's producing this good looking like a 35 year old IT person, what could he do if he were really into getting his body to perform at a peak level?

Not intelligently. They’re in direct conflict.
...no, they're not. Callahan was my favorite player at the time. He wanted to secure himself a big contract, one that he thought he earned. I feel really happy for him and the financial success he got. Tampa overpaid and the contract was not worth it from their perspective, but I'm thrilled for Ryan. And yes, I'm a Rangers fan.

Yeah I agree with BRB. Hence why centers are more valuable in the NHL today. it's not really all that debatable but if that's the hill you choose to die on, that's up to you

Are they?

Good players are the most valuable in the NHL, it doesn't really matter where they play.

This is one of those old school myths that just need to die. Yes cup winners of late have had excellent depth down the middle (Pittsburgh) but they've also not (Chicago.)

But you know what those teams did have? Really good players.
