I noticed this one, Oilers management = bunch of clowns.

How are they clowns? They suck, they’re probably not making the playoffs. Why would they trade one of their only assets for a quick fix that probably won’t turn the season around for them? Besides, Edmonton is cold in the winter, your buddy wouldn’t like it there:sarcasm:

I'm not really sure what the problem is. As you said, Beleskey was a cap dump that they retained 50% on and Spooner, as much as the contract looks terrible now, ultimately landed us Strome and the reality is it was only a 2 year deal. This isn't a 5 year Matt Moulson situation.
Not something I was really noting as bad just that of the 5 we are directly related to 2 of them. No biggie

Pretty much my take.

I think changes to the game have benefited Kreider more than Stepan, and I think Kreider is kind of a throwback to the power forwards of 20-25 years ago who seemed to be put it together later in their 20s.

There was a little bit of crossover for both guys, but I feel they've trended in different directions. That's one of the reasons why it doesn't feel like there's only a year separating them.

It’s also why signing him long-term doesn’t seem to me to be the same risk that other players have been. You could see the potential drop offs from the likes of Staal, Girardi and Callahan a mile away. Kreider continues to get better.

I think his value to this team, and the challenges of finding the right return, will have him over the long-haul.

I guess that's why he escaped to the Dominican Republic with his girl, couldn't care less about trade talks.

But hey...Norway has polar bears on the streets.

As far as the oilers firing PC we all saw that coming just couldn’t believe they waited that long. The oilers can keep all the first round picks they want the biggest knock they have is all of those first round picks that never pan out anyways

Dune Oilers.

I are the Oilers.

I controls the prospects.

I controls the universe.

Bet the Oilers ownership wish they had Dune cat because they are in trouble whole having the best player in the game.

They have no spice to trade if they dont want to move their #1 or any of their good young players/prospects.

So? We gave up about 20 games of Rick Nash and like 3 million of cap space for a first round pick, a seventh round pick, Lindgren and Ryan Strome.

If anything, that makes Gorton and his team look like a skilled front office.

It's a good move to fire Chia. They make team decisions, but look, EDM desperately needs veteran leadership. Desperately.

That is not a destination where a veteran who can take a few kids under his wing (preferably a few of them) sign as UFA. If they are going to overpay for a player or two, it's going to be guys with experience.

Basically they came out and said "We're not going to do what everyone thought Chia was going to do in an attempt to save his job." Just placating the fan base. They have a limited number of assets to deal in order to move the team, so maybe they make a cut from the roster like Nurse or RNH under the guise of a "culture change" instead.

I like Strome. But we still pay 4m per for him (including what we retained on Spooner). A total of 8m per for Strome and Namestnikov.

Sometimes I understand that players can become a bit bitter. Like Hayes. We refused to give him like 5x5 last summer. Or whatever, something like that was mentioned if I remember correctly. But between guys like Strome and Names and Smith and all these guys we burn an extreme amount of money, on more or less crap. So little upside to having those guys for like 20m per instead of like Claesson and Boo Nieves and Vinny L.

Meanwhile we will be extremely cheap when resigning our own RFAs, our young kids, only use the shorter bridge contract. All kids have up and down seasons.

Absolutely. I wonder how far they go. Anything outside of McDavid has to be on the table. If Draisaitl can bring back 2 really good players that cost 2/3 of the cap hit, that has to be mulled. Klefbom might be a key piece, but he seems to be out of the lineup more and more.

They need depth desperately but overpay guys. RNH is finally playing up to his contract but that is more because inflation caught up. How many years was he overpaid?

They should hire Hextall who really didn't get enough credit for how he got the flyers out of cap hell. Plus he will fire the good old boys that can't tell the difference between NHL talent and CHL fakers.

They need to clean house, Stalin style.

It’s not even their own personal. Whatever every GM have done there have been applauded by like media around that team too. It must have roots in the ownership ranks too.

EDMs struggles can be illustrated by one simple observation , how many players on their roster do they have that they have drafted outside the top 8 (or wherever Drai was picked)? Klefbom right, like 6-7 years ago. 8 maybe. Is it one? If they just get one player every other year — they have a great team now. 5 guys from the last 10 years.

They just must figure out what they are doing wrong. It’s not only the armature scouting, these teams higher each other’s scouts all the time, they have track records. Even a broken clock is right twice per day. They just ruin young players too. Culture is rotten.

Know-how as to how you develop a kid is missing. They are run like a team would be run if it was run by a group of posters from HFBoards. So many were like trashing AV for not rushing kids. For making cautious decisions. And in the end I think a lot of that critique became warranted, comes with the territory that you need a fresh approach and it’s hard to change on the fly for a coach. But EDM is the one organization who always makes the easy choices. Bring a kid over, he looks good? Of course give him a shot. Etc etc etc.

I still don't know whether to be more impressed with Gorton by him trading Spooner and getting a player of value in Strome back, or more alarmed that he gave Spooner his contract in the first place.

True they should of gave one year ... now that they have Strome he tradeable at next years deadline so they will get another pick out of that Nash deal

Still think if NYR eats 50 on Smith and adds a McQuaid they can get a 2nd from a team like TO

Would be worth it just to move Smith out

Spooner may have been more attractive because he had term. Edmonton has trouble bringing in talent and probably aren't enthusiastic about trading bodies for people that will fly the coup.

The problem is that even their quality pieces, aside from McDavid, all have question marks. Can Draisaitl produce away from McDavid? Can Klefbom stay healthy? What's Nurse's ceiling? Is Larsson a top-pairing guy or just a 2nd pairing option? Is RNH a guy you can build a top line around, or is he just a 2C being propped up by McDavid?

I think they're going to throw Chia under the bus at some point by claiming he did too much damage and fans need to settle in for a few more years of rebuilding.

Those are all legit concerns but maybe that's why they should try to move them. It's a gamble, but then again most trades are. And opposing GMs may be licking their chops waiting for the next Hall, Eberle, Schultz, Strome, Dubnyk, etc. Being underwhelming in Edmonton does not translate to being underwhelming anywhere else. Or maybe I'm just wishing for a firesale.
