Gotta trade Shatty, McQ, Hayes, Zuc, Names or Strome and get Smith off the books one way or another. Sign Panarin and EK. The cap can fit with Names really being the difference.

Panarin Ziba Andersson
Krieder Chytil Krav
Vesey Howton Buch
Beleskey Strome/Names Fast
(Nieves)

Staal EK
Skjei Pionk
Lindgren/Hajek Claesson/ADA

Maybe Chris Kreider to the Avs. I remember Joe Sakic was interested in Max Pacioretty when Montreal was looking to move him last season. Pacioretty had the same amount of term left. Kreider is signed for another season. Kreider and Pacioretty are the same player. The Avs #1 pick, Tyson Jost or Martin Kaut and another asset for Kreider. They could use a D. Adam McQuaid would be an upgrade for them. That Avs #1 will be a mid first round pick. They might be miss the playoffs without an addition.

Mika Zibanejad is also what the Avs really need.

What would the Avs give up for a Kevin Hayes and Kreider package deal?

Kevin Fiala is having an awful season. Nashville can use any offensive contributions. Is Fiala available? He was an elite player last season. It's obvious Peter Laviolette has no use for him this season. The player's contract is up after this season. Can the Rangers get Fiala out of Nashville? The Predators can also use Kreider. The Jets have these big monsters and Nashville could use some size upfront.

This is from last season.

Creating a Monster: Why Kevin Fiala is Fundamental to Nashville’s Success

That was a better work on Fiala in that link than I expected. But a few things, I've seen quite much of Fiala. Its not hard to understand why Fiala has been traded and not used by coaches. He plays quite much without a plan or purpose, heads down player. He is also a pretty emotional guy, for good at times but its also negative at other times.

In some areas he can be compared to guys like Pasternak and Marchand, he got that low gravity skating and speed, buzz around the net, he even got some of that arogant/sneakt mean streak and temper. But you certainly get a touch of like a Nik Zherdev in the same soup too if you get what I mean. A coach will wanna scream 'NO KEVIN, GO THAT WAY' at times when he is on the ice.

Could be a bit of a boom/bust pick-up...

Anyone have a sense some shoes will fall during this break?

I don't think its likely. I think it will heat up during the week -- or two... -- after the break.

We had a shot to really gun for a top pick a couple of weeks ago, but it was obvious that Gorton needed to start to dismantle the team before we got some confidence back because no matter how bad we looked when we were at a low we weren't going to be quite as worthless as the worst teams in the league when we got back on track, which we are showing now.

But I wouldn't label it as Gorton missing an opportunity to tank properly. Everyone have multiple processes ongoing and we cannot take it for granted that Gorts just can push the button and execute a few moves. In some cases both GMs might feel comfortable with executing something right away, even a month or two before the deadline, but in most cases I assume that the timeline in these processes extends up until the week or two before deadline where most probably have cleared space for anything that might show up last second.

Ugh. This would be so typical Rangers. Instead of going through the process of a rebuild try to accelerate it by overpaying two guys on the back-end years of their primes and in EK's case a growing history of serious injuries.

That team is still not good and saddles us with more long-term contracts. EK and Panarin are pieces you bring in if you're a contending team. Like when the Rangers added Nash. An already good, competitive team, who needed that one major piece meant to put them over.

The Rangers are hardly at this stage. They need to be patient, find out which young guys are NHL players and how good/bad they are, then build.

My interest in Bowers is close to zero. Could care less that Quinn used to coach him

If Colorado is already willing to cut bait on him, not exactly a ringing endorsement of what they think of him

Yea but the coach likely endorses him abc COL does seem like a good trade partner since they need a good 2nd line and have 2 firsts

The only thing is Winnipeg has to win now with this group. Trouba won't be there next season with his contract demands. Laine is up for a big contract. They need a left handed center for him. This year might be their year to win with Trouba still on the team. You know they won't get a D to replace him next season. It's hard.
They will resolve Trouba one way or another in the offseason. Not now.

While it's nice to see them play well and win, I still want that top pick. **** is like kissing your sister on the lips.

Blackhawks and Kings get 5 of the last 10 Cups, and they're both well on their way to a top pick. The ****.
At the rate they’re going, probably just miss the playoffs.

I live in Nashville but rarely watch their games. But their centers collectively are underwhelming. A possible 1st round out if something isn’t done to rectify the ship. And yes Kreider would fit in well here.

At the rate they're going?

They're 9 points out pre deadline.

They're not even close right now and thats with a 3 game win streak.
This team is not as bad as some think. Look, if you get everyone going on the same page, you can still win. Still have a all star goalie wanting to make the playoffs. He could care less about Hughes.

This team is pretty horrible and will be moving some key pieces over the next 4 weeks.

Hank has wanted to make the playoffs all year, yet here we are. They get a couple of gimmies out of the gate (or should be gimmies) after the ASB but then the schedule stiffens up a bit right a way and throughout most of the month. We'll be 15+ points out by Feb 25th, book it.

Also, Sather was a pretty straight shooter and not someone who waited till the last second. He pretty much set his sights on what he wanted and went after it. JG sits on his hands until the last minute, or at least he has.

Bowers is a classic example of a good not great prospect. He’s the second piece in a deal.

He’s an out of the box thought...perhaps Colorado has an eye on Shattenkirk. He played there, albeit not for a long time, but Sakic is certainly familiar with him. They could use another defenseman. Let your imagination run wild with that.

Has Sakic ever made a risky trade? He strikes me as a running scared GM. Maybe I’m wrong. But everything I hear is, Colorado *won’t* trade this guy. Or, that guy is *off the table*. Boring.
He’s better described as patient. Same as Yzerman and Gorton, that’s why these deals tend to happen at the deadline.

I just don’t see Colorado gutting too much of their future so they can win a playoff round. Next year maybe.

You know, I thought about that when their insider mentioned us getting Barrie, it feels like the Avs have been trying to trade him forever. Shattenkirk has an extra year remaining on his contract, the Rangers could then flip Barrie to a team like Toronto if they wanted

It’s possible. But I hate the idea of making a trade just to make another trade.
