He would have been a hell of a trade chip.
I thought I read that they had tried to trade him before the season and couldn't find any deals that were worthwhile. Other teams were leery of assuming that "risk" with Tony. I don't remember where it was stated but I'm sure others can back me up or shoot me down, here.

In the sake of trying to adjust the conversation AGAIN away from ADA, any rumblings on whether, as TC approaches, Drury will use some of the extra cap space this offseason on an expiring vet to grab a pick? Say Koskinen or someone like that? Or all quiet there?

I really hope strome and Georgiev are traded soon TBH. I’m guessing we still have interest in Larkin, but that’s a mountain to high to climb at this point. I also think we have interest in Eichel if Drury can get him for his price.
But beyond that, lindholm in Calgary ain’t available, looks like drury isn’t interested in Dvorak, so I really don’t know where we go from here.
I’m very excited for this season like everyone else, but I wished we fixed 2c

My opinion, your points on the other teams above are their worse case, though I don't hate your ultimate prediction . Truth will lie somewhere in the middle, and even that middle will be a more competitive, dogfight division in relation to the rest of the league. I think the Metro's record, especially against West teams, will be very good.

Lol I don't even think its close to worst case for those teams. I can easily and realistically make the case that every team that made the playoffs from our division last year will be worse next year. Especially Washington, who are the team I'd pick to fall out of the playoff picture if I had to pick one (from the Metro at least, I think as far as Eastern teams go Boston is the one who I'd expect the biggest drop off from if we're not counting the Habs, who only got in because they played in the North.)

I think our division is honestly pretty meh. We have one arguably "elite" team in Carolina but I'd hesitate to give them that title. They're the only team I'm confident in saying will finish ahead of the Rangers. I'd throw Pittsburgh in there too, but they've got a massive Jarry problem.

The Central is a better division than ours.

Lucky us then.

that doesn’t mean that it will happen (it almost certainly won’t) but I think it’s silly to assume that the “good” teams from last year will be good next year too.

their draw backs may be different than ours, but they exist and in some cases, are probably going to be tougher to overcome.

If Drury made his off season moves today, as opposed to when they were made, I think they would have fallen in a bit of a different light.

Every year there is a boatload of high flying speculations, of course, but reality is that there is so little mobility in this league.

All GMs more or less closed shop three weeks ago. We saw some action, more than usual. The Seth Jones trade is big. The OEL trade was far from a given. But soooo many teams did very very few moves. My point is just, if Drury wanted to get things done — he probably had a lot fewer options than we imagined…

From my POV:

The Buch trade is pending evaluation of Sammy Blais. It can end up anywhere on the scale so to speak.

The UFA signings got buy-out friendly contracts. Goodrow plays two years here before going Matt Belesky on us, if sucks but it’s not like org. crippling.

The by far — worst — move could definitely be Chytil’s contract.

I also share the opinion that FO shot themselves in the foot about as bad as DeAngelo did with their "won't play another game as a Ranger" line in the sand. Even after Georgiev, DeAngelo was a tradeable asset. It was textbook mismanagement to tank his value unnecessarily.

This is delusional BS. DeAngelo was bad apple before he even got here. He had a lot of chances and still couldn't control himself from infecting the orchard. Do you think the rest of the NHL is stupid? Do you think they'd fork over assets without the Rangers stating the obvious? He is addition by subtraction.

Lol I actually saw something with this chick recently, she's still milking this.... kinda like some people holding onto past players

Good for Savvy, loved that guy. One of the best playmakers all time to hit the ice in my opinion. Conkys really ruined this one.

Didn't take long for Pierre McGuire to go full Baghdad Bob in Ottawa. I'm proud of Pierre for not listing off every food allergy of Nick Holden's kids, but gushing about MDZ....for some perspective, the last playoff game Michael Del Zotto played was for the Rangers in 2013 (and over 6 teams since). The highlights of your entire offseason was NICK HOLDEN and MICHAEL DEL ZOTTO, let that sink in for a moment.

Quote:
“The addition of Nick Holden has been huge for our organization, we’re really excited to welcome Nick, his family and four children to Ottawa. Really excited about the signing of Michael Del Zotto. Nobody really talks about this but last year in Columbus, he was the only plus player on their defence last year and he was logging big minutes. And don’t forget the situation with Zach Werenski with injuries and Seth Jones with injuries and Michael was kind of a go-to guy. I know a lot of people didn’t watch Columbus play but I can tell you he had a tremendous year last year and we’re really excited about that,” he said..."

The trade has nothing to do with Blais and everything to do with Kakko and Kravtsov.

Exactly. This fact that is so conveniently ignored by hockey writers makes me want to slam my head on the wall.

I can understand being underwhelmed with the return for Buch and calling it a bad trade, but the people who are blowing it our of proportion are crazy. We're not replacing Buchnevich with Blais. Blais is an add to play down the lineup and fortify the depth while they expect Lafreniere, Kakko and Kravtsov to improve and be able to fill Buchnevich's role.

Jack Hughes won 35.4% of his faceoffs last year. Literally dead last in the league (200+ faceoffs). This is the center we want instead of Kakko?

Um, if your argument is based solely on faceoffs, then you're off to a bad start. Many centers need to improve on faceoffs when they are young. How about Chytil for instance? He will improve on faceoffs as he gets older.

And sure, you can say Hughes hasn't lit it up yet, but neither has Kakko. Well, offensively, Hughes has been better than Kakko at least. And we are judging them both on potential. Right? It's not just what they are doing now. Otherwise Kakko and Laf aren't exactly doing better than Hughes.

So I can just as easily say "Kakko scored 23 points in 66 games and 17 points in 48 games. THIS is the winger you want instead of Hughes?"

Or how about, "Laf scored 21 points in 56 games and this is the winger you want instead of Hughes?"

It goes both ways. And yea. I am saying, hypothetically, it would have been nice to get a center like Hughes since we all ready had Kravtsov and then got Laf. It's an imaginary scenario anyway, so it really doesn't ultimately matter. I don't think that takes away from anything Kakko has done or shown. But it's not like he's exploded out of the gate proving to be the best player in that draft class, or even close right now. They both still have a long way to go and Hughes can improve in faceoffs just as much as Kakko, or Hughes for that matter can improve in point production.

Most people here are smarter than that, too. It's obvious why the trade was made.
