Svechnikov’s contract is a decent comparable for Kakko and then Drury will somehow get Kakko signed for 8.5 million per for 5 years next summer lol

Kakko hasn't even come close to touching Svech's production. If they used this contract as a comparable Kakko shouldn't get more than $5MM lol

Svech was pacing for 73 points 2 seasons ago and 65 last season. Not to mention his rookie year he had 20 goals and 37 pts

Yea, but unfortunately none of us have any clue what the actual market for Buch would have dictated. And because of how early and quickly Drury accepted that trade, many have wondered if Drury had any actual notion of what the market would have dictated over the following 2-3 months after that deal.

If he had held off from accepting, seeing what else was out there or what other teams might have eventually been interested, and everything was around the same price, then we could more safely assume that just was the correct market value. But none of us here have any way of knowing that, and it's questionable how much Drury knew that too.

And yes, I am sure Drury does have more information than we do. But that doesn't automatically mean he got the best deal possible. I personally would have thought we could get a 1st round pick at least and possibly a player like Blais with it. But anyway, both sides of this debate are dealing completely in speculation anyway.

According to a few vetted posters here, Buch has been offered up in trades as far back as two drafts ago. Maybe three, I don't recall. There's no point in holding on to him when you have two recent top 10 picks who play the same position as Buch and are on cheaper contracts. All people did here last season was complain the kids weren't getting enough ice, enough PP time, that it was stunting their development. Well, now they'll have an opportunity. The market was the market for Buch, this is the offer Drury took because he believes this is the best way forward. We'll see.

is it curious Hajek remains an unsigned RFA?
maybe not, these are remaining RFAs who played in NHL last
but he's NYR's last un-signed

Is it? Svech has been at a 0.8ish ppg clip the past 2 seasons while KK is below 0.4...

Even with a monster season Kakko isn’t getting svech’s contract. I really doubt he’s offered a 8 year deal either. They will maximize the 5 year window. 3-5 year contract.

It's not strawmaning. Go read coverage on The Athletic, on Blueshirt Banter, on hockey twitter. The points I'm arguing against are absolutely the arguments being made.

You can be underwhelmed by the value in the Buch trade and also understand the logic behind it from a roster building perspective. Instead the overwhelming reaction is that the value was bad and the Rangers have their brains broken and had a horrible offseason because of it.

I am someone who long advocated "trading early," our eventual redundant pieces like Kreider, Buch, and DeAngelo, and was usually met with ferocious opposition from some of the old heads here that "We can't do that! We need adults in the room! We need playoff experience or we'll turn into the Coyotes!"

So I love the concept of dealing Buch.

I hate the reality of what we got for him. And I remain unconvinced that that deal was the best we could do.

I'm not interested in holding on to him. I'm only interested in getting the best possible deal for him. If the preseason was starting and the best we could get for him was a 2nd and Blais, than so be it. But we will never know now.

And I have no idea if the claims of those "vetted" posters are accurate or what the details of those offers were. There's no way to really compare it to this deal or other possible deals. Which again, means all of it, both sides of the argument, are speculative hypotheses. But I am in the camp that thinks we could have plausibly gotten a better deal.

Now I get that maybe Drury likes Blais or was targeting him. But we made some other signings which make Blais far less necessary or useful. He could still turn out to be a terrific player and exactly what we needed. But I don't necessarily think missing out on that Blues 2nd + Blais, would have been the end of the world if it meant plausibly getting more in return. I am far more happy about the Reaves and Goodrow acquisitions.

But no, I didn't want Buch here for the start of the season, or even really the preseason. But that's still like a 3 month gap between when he was traded and when we get into preseason.

Lol I don't even think its close to worst case for those teams. I can easily and realistically make the case that every team that made the playoffs from our division last year will be worse next year. Especially Washington, who are the team I'd pick to fall out of the playoff picture if I had to pick one (from the Metro at least, I think as far as Eastern teams go Boston is the one who I'd expect the biggest drop off from if we're not counting the Habs, who only got in because they played in the North.)

I think our division is honestly pretty meh. We have one arguably "elite" team in Carolina but I'd hesitate to give them that title. They're the only team I'm confident in saying will finish ahead of the Rangers. I'd throw Pittsburgh in there too, but they've got a massive Jarry problem.

The Central is a better division than ours.

Yeah, unlike the Central and the Atlantic, there aren't really any sure things in the Metro. In Washington, a lot depends on older players maintaining and a couple guys bouncing back (namely Mantha and Kuznetsov). They've got good goaltending, but would anyone take Vanacek and Samsonov over Shesterkin and Georgiev? Pittsburgh will find a way, but they're also teetering on a precipice--three straight first round losses. If they get off to a slow start, do they consider moving Malkin? The lost McCann which will be bigger than people expect it to be. Boston loses Krejci and Rask. Bergeron is 36. I think the Islanders and Carolina will be very good teams, but like the Isles in particular had as many wins in regulation as the Rangers did.

I think there's potential for a lot of different outcomes in the Metro, maybe more so than any other division. It could be filled with good teams, it could also be filled with mediocre ones--the Rangers are not exempt from that variance themselves.

To be honest. It seems every player we chased or got were players that were targeted with a role in mind. I can't be mad at that as it is something I, personally, have wished for from our front office for a long time.

I don't like going after "the premier" guy just because we have the assets or cap space when there are so many holes elsewhere in the line-up. I'm not just talking Eichel either.

  • Drury chose Goodrow over Coleman.
  • Denault was desired, but at our price/term.
  • Buchnevich, all aspects considered, was considered expendable. In return, maybe not the most prolific return, but Blais was a "targeted" player with intent.
  • Reaves, we over paid a bit. But again, a targeted player that was "out there" but by no means being shopped. We had to make the efforted ask thus, overpay. His locker room leadership IMO was valued as much as his pedigree on the ice. And, I believe he is active in charity too which NYR has always valued.
For decades we always threw money at the top FA at his position and filled in the holes with bargain-basement reclamation projects, instead of targeting the right mix of guys that potentially fit all the holes better.

This is my feeling too. Dom released his annual fan polls grading front offices and I was surprised to see the Rangers graded so low, and especially in the 'Vision' category. They paid some premiums to make the moves they wanted, but the vision to me is clearer than I've seen it since maybe 2014-15.

These RFA contracts are absurd.

At this point, you aren't drafting to save $$$$, you're drafting to get guys in their prime years without paying for the decline.

With a great season the Rangers should absolutely sign Kakko to an 8 year deal. It will likely be far cheaper and help the team compete longer. They should do the exact same thing with Laf. With good performances, anything less than 8 years for both players is a bad move.
