Im so glad the only hockey fans I interact with are you all and my family. Casual Rangers fans might be worse than dedicated Isles fans to talk with lol
I'll never forget the 50-something year old Ranger fan I met and talked to for an entire intermission, he told me Jimmy Vesey will be a 50 goal scorer some day. (this was in 18-19 when he was already an established bust)

I saw that this morning and It just reaffirms that we definitely got bent over on igors contract. It might not look bad now but he’s gonna want 8-9 million when that contract is up. After hank I was hoping we learned our lesson with paying goalies so much money
First of all, Hank was worth every penny he was paid. If you're going to commit huge dollars and term to anyone it should at least be someone who is wholly worth it, which Lundqvist was.

As for whether we're going to end up regretting Igor's deal because we didnt give him enough term: Not every goalie is Lundqvist. They're not all going to be our starter for 12 straight years and be one of the best goalies in the league the whole time.

At the end of this deal, Shesty will have finished his 6th season as a Ranger. Just for reference as of today there are only a handful of goalies who are have been goalies at the NHL level for their current team for 6 seasons: Vasilevsky, Price, Gibson, Helleybuck. Saros in Nashville as well, but last year was his first as a starter.

It's probably more likely, maybe even far more likely, that we have a new starting goalie by the time Shesterkin is up for his next contract than it is we go on to sign him to a huge deal. And if he becomes a huge star and is a top 3-4 guy every year for the next few years and shows no signs of slowing down, then we probably happily re-sign him and make it work.

This contract, being 4 years, sets him up to be our starter for this contending window that should be opening this season.

Based on the Saros 4 year $20 million contract just agreed to, it does seem like the Shesty contract was a bit of an overpay, although not to a terrible degree..

While Hank in total was worth his contract for what he was to the franchise it was unnecessary for Sather to go out so many years and Hank was not one of the best goalies for the last 2 or 3 year of the contract. League average at best while taking up a substantial % of the salary cap. Sather simply didn't care because of his age he figured it wasn't going to be his problem. Ironic since he is still in Dolan's ear.

Similarly Price has been the face of the Habs franchise but his contract is an albatross just the same. Falling in love with a franchise great does not justify any contract given to the icon - it's just bad contract management in the cap era.

The goaltending debate is a little bit unwieldy, but at the end of the day if Shesty wanted a shorter term deal so that he could land a gangbuster contract at age 29, it’s because he really thinks he is gonna rise up and kick ass the next couple of seasons.

He is betting on his own abilities big time, so we won’t be getting a shortage of effort for sure.

We will also hopefully get more long looks at him in clutch and big game situations where there have been some question marks so far, and play him in front of an improved defensive roster.

I'll never forget the college kid who TOLD me that Keegan Iverson was gonna be a 30/30 power forward in the NHL for a decade. I was in my late 40s then.

Yeah, my issue is that he gets to eat his cake and have it too. He gets to bet on himself to set himself up for a big payday in 4 years while getting paid at a level that no one in his situation has before. WHAT DO I GET OUT OF IT?

In fairness we all post some stupid shit from time to time as well.

I really genuinely thought Nigel Dawes had 35-40 goal potential

Yeah it’s not really a tactical victory in any way unless Shesty actually flops and ends up a mediocre starter rather than a star, in which case we saved ourselves two extra years of that.

I think the variable we all aren't taking in to account is that Shesty could have stayed in the KHL and made really good money over the last couple of years. He came over, went to Hartford without any complaints, rode the bus after being in a pro league at home on a ELC. Remember his time in the AHL awarded him a whopping $70,000.

The team may have let him know that should he come over and play well that they would award him a nice contract when he became a RFA.

I thought my post was meant to imply the "in all fairness" theme.

And yeah. I thought Sean Day was gonna be a steal lol.

I was upset when Fox went before our pick, but Day was a solid gamble in a draft where we didn’t have top two picks, I’d agree. Same with Buchnevich
