I'm still hesitant to say I think Sakic will make a play for Hayes as a trade target. Just seems like the kind of GM to wait to July and take his chances.

He may, but its going to be really hard to justify not improving the team at all when they have the best line in the sport and not a whole bunch of support behind them.

Honestly we could really, really help them, even more so if Hank ever decided that he wants out.

Worth noting that I think we might value Jost a bit more than their board seems to.

I don’t think Jost and a first is an unreasonable request. Especially for a team that has a realistic shot of making some noise in the west and resigning Hayes long-term.

As such, the first might be conditional and a 2020 pick. But that would also mean that the Rangers would want some value added due to the uncertainty of the pick, and the liklihood it wouldn’t be as high in 2020 if Hayes resigned.

Agreed. I'll take Jost, Meloche and their 2020 2nd that becomes a 1st if Hayes signs there.

Also worth noting that the ability to sell Hayes on the team’s long term direction for 4 or 5 months, with a playoff run and the potential addition of even more top talent with the Sens pick, might be worth the cost of what would end up being a pick in the 20s.

We keep talking about acquiring picks from teams that have lottery odds, but are currently outside the top 10 picks, because they want to make the playoffs.

However, we can’t forgot the second part of that equation: acquiring those picks would require giving up something of significant value.

And giving up something of significant value increases the odds that said pick we acquired would no longer be a lottery pick. So we’re right back to trading a guy for a pick in the 20s.

That also works the reverse way as well. The team acquiring a player of significant value would only go down that path if they felt pretty confident that the player they’re acquiring was going to elevate them...well...significantly.

As such, they wouldn’t necessarily view the pick through the prism of trading away a lottery pick, so much as trading away a pick reserved for a playoff team.

Has Jost been used at wing? Always struck me a player who might be better suited at wing the few times I watched him at No Dak. Really really good shooter.

Martin Kaut is one of those kids that is a bit hard to get a track of. He don't have to change his game one bit to move into the NHL. He plays a very mature 2-way game. On top of that he got a good RHS, moves the puck around really well. You can both underrate or overrate kids like that. Either they manage to bring their game up a notch really well and you get a 25+30 winger who is will be better than 90% of the picks in his range or you get someone who just falls a bit short and because more of a 3rd-4th lineer. I like Kaut more and more. He is a good hockey player. Modern Mike Knuble. Knuble had seven 24+ goal seasons in the NHL after leaving us. Knuble might sound 'unsexy', but when you conclude his draft he did well there.

Kaut and Colorado's 1st isn't a bad return if top offers don't pile up on Hayes. Hopefully we can do better, a lot better. But...

My only concern with Kaut is his heart condition

The Rangers moved into a tie for seventh overall (from the bottom) tonight, four points behind co-leaders Ottawa and Los Angeles.

The Rangers are right there.

A few more losses and Gorton selling off at the deadline should tip the whole thing over for the Rangers to get into the bottom 5.

It's been a long time since the Rangers have been out of the playoff race in mid-January. Even in the dark years after Messier and before the salary cap,I don't remember the Rangers being 11 points out of a space spot with 30 plus games to go. They always hung around.

I heard Peter McNab who is the Avs long-time TV analyst yesterday on Sportsnet Hockey Central. He doesn't think Joe Sakic will trade anything valuable for immediate help. None of his picks or young players. Sakic keeps his card close to his vest so he doesn't share his thoughts with many people.

That's smart.

He may be right, but if hes interested in locking up Hayes long term that changes things.

Hayes does nothing for the Avs. Sure he may help them make the playoffs but they are 1st round exit waiting to happen. Now Boston on the other hand should be after Hayes. If I was Boston's GM I'd pay premium.

If Avs are adding it should be on the blue line. Talk about a team desperate for a top-4 d-man.

I don't think the Avs would have any issues keeping Hayes on a new deal. Colorado is a good fit for him on and off the ice.

Gotta wonder if the Avs would be interested in adding Vesey to a deal as well. Immediate scoring depth.

But would he do it 2 years in a row to the same team? idk

You sound like a good jewelery salesman. Take a look at this display case. Looks good on you!

At the end of the day, the HF boards favor prospects significantly more than a lot of other boards, so there's always a mindset to not want to trade any of them, unless you're talking about prospects outside your top 10 or even 15.

I mean you have people on the Avs board who think the player Stastny was at 32 is better than Hayes is at 26. Again, that's fine. But that's the mindset that has a team on the outside looking in ten years after having the third pick in the 2009, despite also being in a position to draft first overall, second overall, fourth overall, and tenth overall twice --- aka 6 top 10 selections.
