That doesn't happen. I am sure the Panthers would ask the Rangers for permission to speak with Hayes. The original point was why would a rebuilding team be a buyer? Maybe Hayes was a bad example. But, it isn't as if rebuilding teams don't make trades or acquire assets on or near the deadline.

And regarding the last point, whether we went after them or not is completely irrelevant. We may not go after Panarin. But, the assumption that if we want them, that we can get them in UFA is a faulty one. There is a reason that teams give up assets for players they want, including pending UFA's. It is because there is no guarantee that come July 1 they will be able to sign that player. I heard from this fanbase for years, that if we wanted that player there is no point in trading for them, just sign them as a UFA. As if it is a guarantee. It isn't.
I know it is not. I wasn't really using Hayes or NY or FL as specific timely examples... just saying there are obvious reasons any player would contemplate any city... for example if you have young children I wouldn't want to be anywhere near FL in terms of schools... even the fancier ones they would attend.

My overall point was rebuilding teams should never expend assets for a UFA to be. It makes zero sense.

I don’t think Florida sees themselves as rebuilding though. Also GMs interests and the long term future of the teams interests don’t often line up

Assuming money wasn't retained, Rask and El Nino have 4 years left. Niederreiter makes $1.25m more so maybe a precursor for another Wild move?
Edit: 3 years after this season

It could be them acquiring another C in Rask to move Staal at the deadline

It's a precursor move to the Hurricanes dealing Ferland

There are looking to get Staal back soon but still very thin down the middle. I don't view them as legit buyers for Hayes. Our ask would be too steep when they aren't locked into a spot. But, Waddell....

Yeah, but like who knows, Rask for Nino and then non-forward assets for Hayes does strengthen their forward group a lot.

I hate to be one of "those" people but I wish Gorts would pull the trigger on something soon. Realizing we have a game in a few hours I know it's not today but plz

5 weeks to the deadline, give it 2-3 weeks and a bigger deal or two should start to come in. Many deals will be mde during the days before the deadline.

Gorts should get creative:

Deal 1.
Kreider and Geo to EDM for Talbot, Pulju, EDMs 1st in 19’ and 2nd in 20’.

Deal 2.
Hayes, Namestnikov and Talbot to Carolina for Faulk, Necas and their 1st in 19’.

Deal 3.
Faulk and Zucc to Toronto for Kapanen, Tor’s 1st and 2nd in 19’

Total:
Kreider, Hayes, Zucc and Namestnikov for three 1sts (EDM, Car and Tor, 2 should be pretty OK range), Necas, Pulju and Kapanen

I love those 3 young RHS up front in Necas, Kapanen and Pulju, so much speed and skill. We will suck the rest of the year, get a top 5 pick and a top forward prospect. Three more 1st round picks, in pretty OK range, 3-4 second rounders. Deal up to grab another player we really like outside the top 10.

Sign Carl Hagelin in the off-season for some homegrown veteran leadership. The kid is a super pro.

Gorton has all the assets in the world to move for a top veteran leader when someone becomes available.

Centers:
Chytil
Lias
Howden

Wingers
Buch
Kravtsov
Necas
Pulju
Kapanen

Ds
Skjei
Pionk
TDA
KAndre
Lundkvist
Hajek

Plus a top 5 selection in 19’ and whatever we can get of it three more 1st rounders in 19’ and three 2nd rounders in 19’.

I like the concept of these lines. :)

Kravtsov-Ziba-Pulju
Howden-Chytil-Necas
Hagelin-Lias-Kapanen

He's been here for 9 years, and he loves this team. It isn't easy, there's a reason he had this mental drop..

Try to show some respect for a change.
I had no idea it was that serious. Hopefully someone is reminding him to eat food every day.
