LORDE
I am Lorde, YA YA YA
I know it is not. I wasn't really using Hayes or NY or FL as specific timely examples... just saying there are obvious reasons any player would contemplate any city... for example if you have young children I wouldn't want to be anywhere near FL in terms of schools... even the fancier ones they would attend. That doesn't happen. I am sure the Panthers would ask the Rangers for permission to speak with Hayes. The original point was why would a rebuilding team be a buyer? Maybe Hayes was a bad example. But, it isn't as if rebuilding teams don't make trades or acquire assets on or near the deadline.
And regarding the last point, whether we went after them or not is completely irrelevant. We may not go after Panarin. But, the assumption that if we want them, that we can get them in UFA is a faulty one. There is a reason that teams give up assets for players they want, including pending UFA's. It is because there is no guarantee that come July 1 they will be able to sign that player. I heard from this fanbase for years, that if we wanted that player there is no point in trading for them, just sign them as a UFA. As if it is a guarantee. It isn't.
My overall point was rebuilding teams should never expend assets for a UFA to be. It makes zero sense.
