Teams can be buyers and not playoff contenders, especially if they are obtaining a long term piece. If a team like Florida (hypothetically) needed a 2C and Hayes is available, still somewhat young and is a known quantity, why wait? They aren't buying the piece for this year, rather they are securing a piece that will be important to their long term success.
Other side of this coin is why give up assets for him when he's a UFA? Same thing we are discussing at times with Panarin.

Makes some sense for us to sign him for $, less than ZERO for us to expend assets to acquire him now.

For the exact reason I have been harping on for years with every big name UFA. There is no guarantee you sign him.

Over the years I've heard that instead of trading assets for, that we should just wait to sign: Kovalchuk, Thornton, Stamkos, Tavares, Hossa, etc.

The only time I ever recall it working out for us was with Richards.

MSL had a NTC and he would only waive for us and I still contend that we paid too much in that circumstance. Regardless, open market he would have fetched more even as a 38 y/o. We don't have to trade Kreider so we don't have to settle for 1 specific team's scraps.

Which is understand but then I'll counter with, If he doesn't want to sign there, you just gave up assets to get a player, when you had little to no shot at a playoff with him, for a few months and now don't have those assets AND that player walked.

I'd rather not land the UFA and keep the assets.

I'm sure you'll say you have a few months to prove your organization and the city are great, teammates, etc.

In this scenario NY is a 1st class org. top to bottom, yes theyre rebuilding but money isn't an object (Cap is obv).

FL has less taxes, beaches and bikinis

The player, whoever he is will be balancing all of these facts (and the ones that come into play in other cities obviously) along with his desire to win and make a choice. Point is, 3 months in NYC or Miami isn't going to change his mind.

Also, of the big name UFAs you mention I'd say we didn't go after any of them. Stamkos resigned... but he would've been the one we went after hard.

I doubt they'll trade Kreider.

Regarding Zucc, when he had that meeting with Quinn, Gorton and Sather I'm pretty sure they explained why they have to trade him, and mailing it in is the worst thing he can do. Then there's chance he could end up without a new contract in this league.

So now he's playing for his own future, the better he plays the better his contract should be. I believe the Rangers have promised him as much ice time as he wants up until the trade deadline, and he's had a lot of that lately.

Edmonton next?

He had to have all that explained to him?

Does this Rask trade mean C’s are at premium value right now and the Rangers will get a complete haul for Hayes?
Seriously though, how the hell does Rask return Nino
I know Nino isn’t amazing but Rask legit sucks

Yes. Mats Zuccarello, a 31 year old grown ass man who has been in the league for 9 seasons was previously unaware that the better he plays the more money he stands to make and he wont have to fear being unsigned.

That doesn't happen. I am sure the Panthers would ask the Rangers for permission to speak with Hayes. The original point was why would a rebuilding team be a buyer? Maybe Hayes was a bad example. But, it isn't as if rebuilding teams don't make trades or acquire assets on or near the deadline.

And regarding the last point, whether we went after them or not is completely irrelevant. We may not go after Panarin. But, the assumption that if we want them, that we can get them in UFA is a faulty one. There is a reason that teams give up assets for players they want, including pending UFA's. It is because there is no guarantee that come July 1 they will be able to sign that player. I heard from this fanbase for years, that if we wanted that player there is no point in trading for them, just sign them as a UFA. As if it is a guarantee. It isn't.

That's suprising. There's their scoring winger.

Does this put Carolina back in the market for a center?
There are looking to get Staal back soon but still very thin down the middle. I don't view them as legit buyers for Hayes. Our ask would be too steep when they aren't locked into a spot. But, Waddell....
