Well the “guy” who told me works for a Western Division team.We hear the same story right now, 6 weeks from the trade deadline, every season.
"There are more sellers than buyers and teams are unwilling to pay seller prices."
I'm certain front office personnel of teams in the playoffs mention this to sellers and the likes of Elliotte Friedman, Dreger, and McKenzie. Ultimately, these guys usually wind up paying the high price for a piece that could put them over the top for a shot at winning the Cup.

You could read it as we sign every big bad contract available. I don't think thats realistic of any team in the Cap.
You could also read it as every big contract we hand out to a UFA is based off their success with another team and is subsequently a bust for us. I think this was the intended reading, and accurate.
Not the YotesA buyer or the Yotes? Because a buyer is doing all they can to drive down prices right now.
Hope he makes it 3 in a row.
I talked to an NHL friend from the west today and he told me not to expect a killing at the trade deadline. He thinks the market is shaping up as having more sellers than buyers this year. Expects some of the teams on the outskirts of the playoff race will trade secondary pieces to get into the playoffs but he sees only five teams in the west with a legitimate shot at coming out of the conference. Would be shocked if Colorado makes a big move.
Shattenkirk is an elite support player. When he's your best defenseman, you're going to be disappointed with him in that role
There are 8 teams in the west within 6-7 points of the wildcard spots.
Just 4 in the east.
That's 4-12 teams that are either looking to maintain their positions, or attempting to make up a small difference
I think the buyers/sellers are still developing and we have a full month before that picture is more clear

Is it a foregone conclusion that we are making a deal(s) after January 19th? Would 0-4 through next weekend encourage that trade? Nothing would surprise me - could see a bigger deal involving Buchnevich. Something off the map.
I think Colorado is a perfect fit for Hayes but I just have a feeling Sakic is going to use the Ottawa pick and Makar as an excuse to hold pat at the deadline. Almost laughable to waste the season that MacKinnon and Rantanen are having, but that's the reality of things there. They're a one line team and can't compete with the elite teams in the NHL night after night.
Dallas is the team I'm starting to keep an eye on.
I have some hope that Gorton can pull something off with Smith or Shattenkirk, or maybe something bigger for Skjei. Something has to give on D, we need to clear a space or two for next season.I'm not expecting a fire sale. Hayes and Zucc will go. Maybe a smaller piece like McQuaid too. But that's it. I don't see the Rangers trading Kreider, Zibanejad, Skjei, Shattenkirk, Vesey, etc.
Bad news for us - if the return isn't right then signing Hayes might be the better alternative.
Zooks will draw enough interest to trade. I have my doubts about any other pieces, save for maybe Namestnikov, bringing back a whole lot - ie... McQuaid, the untradeable Staal, Smith, etc... I'm not sure how much any of those guys really helps a team in contention. Going to be interesting for sure.
Of course, Bobrovksy isn’t the Jackets’ only UFA. The club also has to deal with forward Artemi Panarin. Neither player has shown much inclination to sign with the club, and there is no shortage of talk of where they may end up. You have to wonder if they’re a package deal if Panarin and Bobrovksy may end up in Florida. That rumour is out there. An interesting situation to watch./QUOTE]
