Who would you rather invest in, Tarasenko or Panarin? Both 27 years old. Tarasenko will cost assets. Panarin only money which we have a lot of.

I think the Ranges will add an elite scorer/sniper to play with and help the developement of our younger centers Andersson and Chytil. Even to play with Hayes if they trade and re-sign him. I think Chytil ends up being a winger in his career especially if we fall enough to draft Hughes.

Panarin. The goal is to make the team better and Panarin does that without being over 30 and costs us zero assets.

Question for everyone

Is Tarasenko that much better than Stone?
Don’t know about “better” but personally I prefer Stone. He’s maybe less dynamic from what I’ve seen. But a bit more consistent. He seems to have evolved into a pretty complete player. Just my impression.

Be ballsy and get both of them.

Why? So we can compete for a playoff spot and end up with a mid first round pick?

I don't understand people. Now is the time to accumulate high first rounders.

You do that by being terrible for a couple of seasons.

This is year ONE.

When we have our Calder candidate type players, that's when we start adding pieces like panarin.

Tarasenko has 5 years left at $7.5m so it's not automatic for me that the "free" assets are necessarily better. He's out of contract at 32 or 33. Very few years of paying for a diminished player.

Let's say Tampa wins and we acquire at least 1 more 1st, and our first is top 5. I would do the middle 1st, Namestnikov/Strome/Buchnevich, a forward prospect that's not kravtsov and a d prospect that's not Miller.

There are multiple ways to build a team. The way you explain is one. Going for Senko and Breadman is another.

There is no right and wrong during a rebuilding. Only progression and regression.

Say the Rangers trade for Tarasenko and sign Panarin, what’s the plan for Kreider? Can’t have that much cap space tied up on the wing.

What assets for Tarasenko ? They are keeping picks and prospects

IF a deal happened Kreider would go the other way. Rangers will use Kratsov , Buch on RW so rather keep the LW

Sure, there are multiple ways to build a team, but are there multiple ways to build a Stanley Cup winner?

Last team to win a cup without a drafted top 5 pick on the roster?

Drafted by the team winning?

We've had multiple top 5 picks on the roster (Jagr, Nash, Strome, Staal, etc...) and didn't win crap.

Do you guys like Tyson Jost? How about Jost + Colorado's first rounder for Hayes? Would that be too much on Colorado's side? Jost is also billed as low hockey IQ though
Jost is actually billed as a high IQ player
He’s weak though and isn’t a great skater, especially speed wise. I doubt the Avs do that though, they shouldn’t be in the rental market just yet

Also, Stone>>>Tarasenko easily

Would rather give up assets and get four seasons of tarasenko at 7.5 mil than have Panarin for eight seasons at 9 mil. You’ll lose assets by trying to keep that contract and a competitive team under the cap.

Yes... Drafted by the team winning.

But thank you for proving my point that acquiring former picks isnt the correct route.

What makes you think we won't get a top 5 pick this year?

Top 5 pick plus Senko and Panini in the off season would set us up.

Because 1, it hasn't happened yet.
Because 2, that's a ton of pressure on that one pick. Why not try for 2 while the team is terrible before adding complimentary pieces.

Ah, but speculating years/cap hit isn't a known quantity (look @ Shattenkirk contract). I'd rather sign Panarin and keep assets. And, honestly, if we're at the point where we're looking to trade Panarin in year 3-4 of his contract then the "rebuild" probably isn't going all that well.

Because if you have Panarin on the roster, you're not rebuilding. You're retooling. He's the type of player that can will a team into a playoff spot by himself.

We don't need/want that for at least another season or two.

I'll agree to disagree on that. Rebuilding is trying to make your team better - through the draft, through asset management, and by signing players that make your team better. Panarin, or the like, makes your team better and costs you nothing. I get where you're coming from with how YOU would do a rebuild.

The Pens drafted Crosby in 2005 and signed Gonchar to a 5 year contract as a UFA that summer, for example.
