We did that once and it might have cost us a Cup 10 years later.

Blowing a high pick that bad is a butterfly flapping its wings.

Hopefully, we get out of that business.

I certainly wouldn't put Lias in that category as his draft was underwhelming anyway.

This upcoming draft we absolutely have to nail. It's could be a legendary draft. 2003 Part II.
I’ve said it a few times before, but starting last year, it’s a hell of a good time to start a rebuild with these draft classes. 2020 looks like a real great group too so far

Accidentally posted this in the draft watch thread

The Flames play by play radio broadcaster Derek Willis was on the NHL Network earlier tonight. He was talking to Jackie Redmond about the Flames trade deadline needs. A lefty D and a forward. He mentioned Kevin Hayes or Chris Kreider as possibilities. The Flames also like Mark Stone.

Calgary was interested in Hayes when he was a free agent. Good friends with Johnny Hockey. Boston College. The Flames have their #1 pick in 2019. They also have Juuso Valimaki who is out with a high ankle sprain. I think the Flames can make the WCF out of their division. They are better than San Jose and Vegas.

Elliotte Friedman appears on Bob Stauffer's show every Friday in Edmonton.

The Oilers need to make the playoffs this season.

Stauffer believes Edmonton would trade their #1 for a player under control.

Also, Ryan Strome was a popular teammate in Edmonton.

Edmonton has no use for Spooner.

Erik Karlsson will probably resign in SJ. He strikes me as the type who don’t want to change teams too often...
Wouldn’t surprise me, now that he’s settled in he’s on an absolute rampage. If he wants the 8th year he has to wait until after the trade deadline to resign though

Not at the expense of Kreider.

Comparing JP to Domi is silly. Domi has produced at a 50+ point clip over a full season in every season except the last one. JP hasn't even amassed 40 NHL points.

JP is a 3rd overall pick and is a pretty talented kid, I don’t understand why it’s silly to compare him with anyone?

Domi had like 1 goal long into last season, people were ridiculing him for it. That is why he was mentioned.

You also say that Domi has so many more pts than JP. Domi was 20 when he made his debut in the NHL, JP is 20 today. I am sure EDM could have ruined Domi too... Played him on a 4th line in the NHL when he was 18 and 19...

Still, the biggest factor you miss is that JP is 6’5. Its a tremendous challenge for players that size to get by in today’s NHL. Just look at a guy like Mantha, it takes time for kids like that to get into the NHL. It’s simple laws of physics, the bigger you are the requirements on your strength grows exponentially.

JP is a real boom/bust kid and he is getting little to no support in EDM. They rushed him to the NHL because they were desperate for warm bodies, then they have just tried to stash him away until he is ready to play with McD. But it don’t work like that, kids needs a perfect environment to develop in to keep up with the top of their peers.

I don’t know if JP can get his foot speed to a level where he can keep up in the NHL. But I know that he can be tremendously lethal around the net. He has a really heavye RH shot that has all the potential in the world. The kid has great offensive instincts. Get some pressure off him in a new environment, get him up ice and get him the puck more and good things should happen.

Zuccarello to the Caps for Andre Burakovsky.

Based on MacLellan’s comments Friday, if Washington were to trade Burakovsky, it would want someone who immediately could plug into his usual third-line role while not exceeding his current $3 million salary cap hit.

But just because MacLellan is satisfied with the state of his team through 43 games doesn’t mean he won’t be active over the next month as the Feb. 25 trade deadline nears. He has traditionally gone for defensive depth, but he said this season, “the only thing we’re going to look for is: Is there a hockey trade to be made — salary for salary, player for player — in the forward group?”

MacLellan didn’t explicitly say winger Andre Burakovsky is the forward he might be looking to swap, but there has been plenty of speculation around the 23-year-old this season. He was a healthy scratch for Thursday’s 4-2 win at the Boston Bruins, his fifth time out of the lineup this season, and he’s on pace for career-low production with just five goals and four assists through 38 games. Teams have inquired about Burakovsky’s availability, which is expected when a young forward with offensive upside looks like he might need a change of scenery.

The Rangers retain $1,5M to make the cap hit work.

I think the difference between Domi and Puljujarvi is that Domi had produced at a top-six level for a couple of years before being dealt. Most people realize Puljujarvi is talented, but he's really not showing a lot of signs that he's putting it all together. He's barely producing at a 4th line level and while Edmonton is certainly devoid of talent up front beyond McDavid, RNH, and Draisaitl, he's been given a chance on several occasions to play with those guys and hasn't been particularly effective. He's still young but there are a lot of red flags there. Even at 20, you expect a kid who played so well in Finland against men as an 18 year old to do a bit better in the NHL.

Now, that all being said, I think he was always a bit of a project who needed some time to figure the game out. He looked pretty good during his short stint in the AHL this year and has shown some flashes at points since Hitchcock has taken over the Oilers. Is he a kid I'd take a flier on? Absolutely, but he's definitely a risk. If Edmonton wanted to deal him for Buch and throw in a pick? I might be interested in that. Zucc? Obviously, but probably not at all realistic.

That's definitely an option that doesn't get talked about as much as a part of the rebuild: Buying low. I was really hoping the Rangers would be able to pull Lindholm out of Carolina over the summer. He's overachieving a bit in Calgary right now I think but he was a guy I thought was poised for a break out with a new team. Could Puljujarvi be that kind of player? Sam Bennett? Alex Wennberg? Andre Burakovsky? This is the time to roll the dice on guys like that.

Thoughts on Zuccarello with up to 50% retained to Washington for Burakovsky and a 1st. Burakovsky makes $3m, zucc makes $4.5m, so they can gain $.75m for upgrades.

You got scooped by 12 hours.

Edit: in all seriousness it's a good match. This is the type of deal both teams should be making.

I'm late to the party but I have to say somethings... I love Rick Nash as a person and as a hockey player, but I always will carry a grudge against him for what he didn't do in the playoffs for us.
@bobbop , you're always saying that you're against a rebuilding because of your age, you have to admit that we're not winning the stanley cup and the next years and the best chance that we have to contend soon is that we get a top 4 pick in this draft and the next one.
I still have faith in our management, the only pick that is debatable is Andersson and to be truthfull, I don't see a player picked after him that have showed a lot more of potential than him, maybe Brannstrom.
And finally, the only player that I'm completely against trading is Zibanejad, his age, his contract and his play so far has been the thing we neeed for the future.

Puljujarvi reminds me a bit of Zibanejad in his D+3 with the Sens. It was his first full NHL season, and there were still questions about his worth ethic and mental effort during the games. As talented as Puljujarvi is, he’s shown that he doesn’t have the hockey IQ to keep up at the NHL level.

Do I think he can break it? Maybe, but it’ll be tough when he’s in such a bad development environment like Edmonton. I’d be more than happy to take a flyer, but we’d need a much more significant piece in return for Kreider.

I’m done with players with low hockey IQs. It’s been three straight years of players out of position, terrible structure, and an overall lack of execution at basic hockey plays like breakouts, forechecking, and shot selection.
