At reasonable cap hits as well. So they did exactly what the Rangers should do with Strome, use that as a leverage point in negotiations and get him signed to a reasonable contract to play with your best player.

He's actually a really good comparison to draw. He knew he was in a very good position to win and knew very well how much he was benefiting from playing with great players. Signed two short term deals in the neighborhood of 6% of the cap. Roughly $4.9M given today's $81.5m cap, which is right around where I would expect to see a Strome deal.

Crosby has brought up Kunitz, Dupuis, Sheary, Guentzel, Rust (they played together a little), Neal, Horqnvist, Armstrong, Malone. Paying/extending Kunitz because he did well with Crosby would have been a mistake considering how many completely random guys could fill that role.
Crosby is a center, I understand what you're saying but it's not the same.... but they did extend Kunitz, Dupuis, Rust, Hornqvist and Guentzel..... so I dont understand your already faulty point. It argues that they should sign Strome.

Panarin is also outpacing anything Crosby has produced, minus 2006-2007... that's how good Panarin-Strome has been.

One year deal for Strome. I need to see this again or he gives us a real sweet 4 year deal under 5 mil per. But that’s a tricky one you have to be careful. You have to pay Mika soon that will be big money. You have Chytil coming up and quite frankly as much as Strome and Panarin have scored they get killed constantly when playing top centers.

but I’m not trading Strome this year no way

I completely disagree. They've been our best line.

All lines get 'killed' considering our system/foundation.. They are not as bad as the other lines.

There is no way I would give Strome 5 x 5. If a team offers you a 2nd round pick and a prospect at the deadline, you take it and run.
You wouldn't pay a center 6% cap hit, pacing for 70pts... A middle 6 center is worth that, let alone a 70pt center.

It doesn't matter who he's playing with... He's producing at that clip and $5M is a bargain. I'd take 5x5 and run

$5 million x 5 years when he has incredible chemistry with your best players is a bargain. Selling that for a 2nd round pick and a prospect is also extremely underwhelming. He has RFA status and is still young.

Im all for nuance that goes beyond points regarding how a player is playing, but he has jumped from ~.5PPG last season to nearly a point per game this season. That is too stark to ignore.

I certainly don't mind Strome, but I also think you can attach a lot of halfway decent centers to him and they'll see their #'s boosted. That's why Im not married to paying Strome like he's doing this on his own.
So last year it was points per game. Now this year, it's the assists that he is piling up? Just making sure that I keep up here. We try to explain away lack of production and now we are trying to explain away actual production all under the false pretense that "anyone" can just step in and do the same thing?

You're really going to compare Strome to Mitch Marner? Give me a break
That is not what I did. I asked you if we should discount Marner's assistis when they are feeding the Matthews, Nylander or Tavares of the world?
Panarin elevates those around him, and Strome is a byproduct of that to an extent
I do not think that anyone is disputing that.
I don't know what percentage of Strome's points are directly influenced by Panarin but I have a hard time committing money to someone who needs to be attached at the hip to him to have success
Panarin was not on the team last year. And Strome had success before being placed with Panarin this year. We just needed to come up with a different set of excuses for it.
And any good GM worth his salt is going to point out his production with Panarin to try and lower the value to acquire said player. This is negotiating 101
No one is saying that GMs do not negotiate. But if what you are referring to his possible trade value in a deal this year, there is also the art of counter negotiating as well as the inquiring GM not wanting to overplay his hand. All in the eye of the beholder.

It's no shocker....he's followed the same pattern Zucc laid last season....barely a whimper in the early part of the season....now that the trade deadline looms he suddenly finds his game.....he's a goner.
Umm....ok. Except we are talking about Strome, right? Yeah, he was also good before being with Panarin. And good last year. And seeing how he is an RFA, I doubt that the pressure and KNOWING that you are getting dealt as a UFA is nearly the same thing.

one of the few top 6 forwards that this team has, that has some grit to his game. especially with Lemmy out, Rangers need more grit from their players in my opinion.

I sometimes feel that in the attempt to want to keep his contract low, people low-ball Strome's clear ability to play very well with the Rangers best player. If the Rangers can get an opposite winger to Panrin who can score .7-.9 ppg for $5m per season for the next 4-5 years while Panarin is here that's a coup. That's 1st line winger production for a guy making decent 2nd line or elite 3rd liner money. That allows for the team to spend elsewhere.

The skill of playing very well with a skilled player is not one that every player shares. Chemistry is a real thing

And that's what helps you win. The quality of depth. To me, this is a good fit for both Strome and the team. I am strongly in favor of re-signing him. Strome is a guy who is a veteran that can help kids along, and is by all accounts a good teammate.

His career was on the verge of tilting towards Europe at one point, but he's done well here. I would like to see him re-sign on a 3-4 year deal, at something like $4.9M. The Rangers can front load the bonuses like they did on the Brassard deal, and Strome can realize a greater return (several hundred thousand if not more) through investments and the time value of money.

I can understand people's trepidation about signing Strome to a new contract, but not because he's going to block anyone. Chytil is showing promise, but he's a way off from being a clear-cut #2 center with an even longer road to generating the kind of production Strome is with Panarin on his wing.

There's also nothing written in stone that says Chytil has to play with Panarin. If he can play with Kakko, or another talented winger, the team can have 3 very good scoring lines at their disposal.

And truth be told, with the way DQ rolls his lines, I feel okay Chytil playing a third line role right now.

One aspect to signing Strome is whether or not the team sees Chytil as the long term solution for 2C. If he they do (and thus far this season he looks to be progressing as such), spending 5 million a year on Strome to be a 3C isn't wise use of cap space.

I have no idea what would be good value in a Strome trade though. I'm sure GMs are going to point to his production with Panarin and say "well he's a byproduct of playing with one of the best players in the league"

Actually up to $5m is not too much for 3C vet and, considering that this vet would actually play up at 2C due to synergy with a star player, it would be a pretty good investment.

Completely agree. If we are talking pairs then Zibanejad - Kakko, Panarin - Strome and Chytil - Buchnevich create depth through top-9 that shouldn't be too cost prohibitive to supplement the 3rd spots with more quality.

I’m pretty sure it became a dick swinging contest between slats and jagr that screwed this up. We had a player option or something weird the isn’t allowed now if I recall

Not trying to bump a post from a few pages back, but here was the situation.

Jagr came to the Rangers with the huge contract he signed in Washington. After the lockout, it was rolled back to the league maximum. However, Jagr's contract contained two important contract extension provisions:

1) If he won the Hart Trophy in any year
2) If in the last year of the contract he scored 83 or more points

1) Should of won the Hart in 2006, but Joe Thornton beat him (mostly by getting Cheechoo to score 56 goals). Jagr still went on to win the player's chosen Pearson award for Most Important Player, saying,

"With this award, you get voted on by players you play against every night and I think they understand the game better than the media."

2) Jagr had his worst season w/ NYR the last year, only scoring 71 points.

If Jagr had won the Hart in 2006, his contract would of been automatically extended 1 year and you can make the case he may of never left for Russia.

Sather didn't want to commit to Jagr more than for 1 season and Jaromir was seeking a multi-year deal. Jagr signed a 7 million dollar/yr, tax-free contract which would of matched his earlier 11M NHL salary.

Sather signed superstar Markus Naslund for TWO YEARS which thankfully, Naslund terminated after one. Naslund retired without requiring the Rangers to buyout his contract, and thus why I support having '91' retired in the rafters.

TLDR: Joe Thornton deserved to have his jaw broken by Eric Lindros; just would of preferred it to happen in 2006 instead.

Adding to the above story, the rumor was that Slats wanted Hossa first, over Jagr. After it became clear that Hossa wasn't signing with NYR, he moved to Jagr, but wasn't able to convince him for the offered deal, and Naslund was the third choice option.

The real crime was that we weren't willing to pay Jagr enough but we turned around and gave Wade Redden 6.5x6, which in today's cap numbers would be close to 10 million a year for a declining 31 year old defenseman.

I'm a noted Strome non-believer, but I'm going to try and temper my bias against him by making a comparison to another 26 year old... JT Miller.

Before this season, Miller had only a slightly better points per game number than Strome. And I'd argue that Miller played on much better teams throughout his career, so let's call that even. If Miller was still a career Ranger, and was now having a breakout season centering Panarin at almost a PPG pace, how many of you would say no to signing him to a 4 x $5m extension?

But many (including myself) have argued against that for Strome. I'm not saying that I've now converted, and obviously playing at a PPG pace is not the only metric that matters. But I do think some fans have an inherent bias against him based on how he was acquired, and I'm trying to push past that bias myself and see him for the player he's been this year. We got Strome for scraps, yes. But if he was a Rangers draft pick having a breakout year, I don't think many fans would be trying to trade him away for a 2nd and a B-prospect.

An obvious mistake given everyone who ever played with crosby played well.

Why do I need to pay anyone to play with him when I can have Dominik Simon or any other random produce over 2 pt/60 for almost nothing.

Yeah that really wound up biting them in the ass.

Was listening to the radio on the way home and they were talking Kreider to Pittsburgh. Josh Yohe was on (sort of a poor-man's Brooks here in Pittsburgh) and noted that the Pens really like Kreider. Also said Rutherford isn't a fan of surrendering prospects in trades and would rather move picks. Can't really see that being the best option on the table for Gorton when all is said and done.
