The one thing about Kreider is that he strikes me as a different sort. This is someone who finished his degree early. He doesn’t seem like a hockey lifer.

He's not. He'll have a great post hockey career, the dude is off the charts intelligent. A very gifted man in more ways than his physical traits.

What would the return for strome be?
I've been back and forth on how to proceed with the rebuild and whether to resign krieder and to a lesser extent strome. My feeling today is trade for futures, stick with the long term plan and reinvest in 2021 when 3 bad contracts are off the books and the leagues cap is increased.
I love krieder and believe his skating strength speed and net presence will really be missed. I have not seen another ranger who possesses his unique qualities. What terrifies me about signing him long term is the amount of time he was injured while in his 20's. That will not improve moving forward. The other reason is the timing of the window. The Rangers cannot afford to take shortcuts and need to complete the rebuild correctly. I also love the idea of having multiple high draft picks in a stacked draft year.
Please stop with the idea that krieder will take a team friendly 4-5 year deal. It will not happen and not one person on this thread would do anything any different. He will end up with 7 years and 50 million and I say good for him.

He looks like another third liner

He's not worth $2M, but I think he's worth a shot as a 4th line C/RW. A good utility guy to have in the mold of a Luke Glendening. I don't know if it's worthwhile to blow a former 7th overall pick on a guy who you might not want to qualify at that price, but in terms of a player profile, I'm good with getting a guy who can fill a valuable role for Lias.

I'd prefer Tage Thompson out of BUF. A guy who can wheel it, but was and perhaps still is physically underdeveloped to play a forward game. Players like Tage are better if/when they mature physically. He'd be a good net front option. The rest of his game is incomplete, but the upside is higher than Lias, and he moves better at 6'6".

People say this player or that player is different, and at the end of the day these guys are looking to get paid

It's a cold business but I don't know how any player would want to go out of there way to give the Rangers a discount after what happened with Shattenkirk

Kreider is going to get paid, same as Hayes, and it's more likely than not going to be elsewhere

But why would Buffalo want to move Tage?

But why would Buffalo want to move Tage?

A couple of reasons:

1. He's a boom or bust guy at this point, unless he starts checking, or just simply scoring. But right now, he doesn't have an effective NHL role.
2. If he isn't able to put on weight, he's not going to be effective playing the game he needs to play. In other others, he will be injury prone trying to be a bruising checker if he's still skin and bones.
3. From what I've heard, he asked out of St. Louis. Don't know the specifics but heard he wanted out.
4. Their development efforts with him haven't been working. Tage was rushed by two teams who saw a 6'6" kid who can skate and score in college, after a very nondescript junior stint. He hasn't come close to doing that at the NHL level. Was it a fluke where he just parked himself on the PP in college and raked it in?

In other words, he's a guy who needs to transform his game to be an NHL player, and it's questionable if he can do that or not. It could be a physical issue where he can't put on any weight.

So he's a project. But... one where I think putting on mass.... can definitely help. The guy has hands and can skate. But doesn't have an NHL job until he figures out how to carve out a niche. His Dad is one tough hombre, and his brother is crushing it in college. So he's been around the game.

The Rangers have 9-10 players I can see playing important roles on a Stanley Cup contender. They need to add at least 4-5 more.

Some of this will come from emerging youth. Some hopefully will come in a trade or two from some of our excess in certain positions. And there will be 1-2 strategic free agent signings.

The salary cap will be tight next year but beyond that things loosen up allowing room to move.

My primary concern right now is seeing the Rangers keeping those 9-10 players in house and if they absolutely have to move one of them, getting equivalent hockey talent back.

I'm in the boat of 4 forwards, and 1 defenseman that need to be added to the roster before the window can re-open. And even then you may end up making some swaps to fit a team's identity and cap space.

At the current team's composition, it needs to be 2 more kids. 3 trades, and 1-2 free agents, plus clearing some more dead space.

I'm not sure if it can be done all in one off-season, but some of those trades are not for those who get attached imo.

Serious question, would it be difficult to find a guy like Buchnevich in UFA on a semi-short deal? Say 3-4 years. The reason I ask is because if it is, would it not behoove the team to look to move him and backfill with a UFA paid about the same amount?

Yes. The FA class is horrible. You're talking like...Toffoli or Craig Smith in that range and that's basically it.

Granlund
Hoffman
Soderberg
Dadonov
Pageau

That’s assuming there isn’t a player out there who could fill in that spot who’s available from a team with no cap space looking to make room as well

Hoffman/Dadonov are a completely different price range. Granlund may not be since he's having an awful year who knows. Soderberg and Pageau are centers.

This team desperately needs 4th line / depth help. Desperately.

It is mind boggling that nothing has been done by Gorton to address it. Nothing. Try anything at this point. Veteran Free Agent (which they missed out on all the good ones that wouldve been cheap), a trade giving up a 6th or 7th round pick. Something needs to be done. You need a competent 4th line. 3rd line. Its a waste finishing as a middling team which is their destiny in large part because of their lack of forward depth

Hoffman and Dadanov will cost over $6MM at the very least. Hoffman will probably push over $7MM.

I'd be in in Hoffman on a short deal over Buch or Kreider. Someone who can one time from the right side would dramatically change our PP.

There's a difference for paying for leadership and production. Rangers historically have often tied to two too closely together. Just because a player is a marquee name or a former All Star doesn't mean he's a good leader.

Prospal/Fedotenko/Rupp were all character guys on bargain contracts who helped prepare the last batch for their future success. Those guys were either experienced vets, or Cup winners. Richards was the full package he just had a fast decline.

The problem with the current construction of this team, who is the alpha male in this group? Who is going to set the tone and require the best out of his teammates? Who other than Panarin has won a Cup? They have a few guys who have been to an SCF and Conference Finals, but that's it. No killer instinct. This team needs more crazy.

Lundqvist is the default leader but how serious does this team really take him? He's a generation older than most of these guys but his play is too inconsistent. I love Ziba but he's not Messier. He's passionate and cares but doesn't have that "pissed off" jean.

True. And he's gone after next season, you'd have to think.

We are entering dangerous territory where paying through the nose for "leadership" is being tossed around quite a lot.

If the fanbase is really all in on this rebuild, we need to take a leap of faith that this crop of youngsters will eventually evolve into leaders. They absolutely do not need to be overpaying Kreider into his 30's for this.
Lindberg , Lemieux, DeAngelo, Trouba will lead the way in leadership plus Zibs and Panarin to a certain degree .

Our bottom6 is bad. Real bad

Chytil is not a good center, he's a liabilty, yet he's paired with Kakko and Howden. Kakko is currently lost. Howden is Howden. Smith, McKegg and AHL player/flavor of the month on the 4th.

I think 360 days into the future we will see a much better Chytil and Kakko . Chytil has taken huge steps this season . Next season he will turn heads and score more and be a bit more physical and win more board battles ....it is coming and will be worth the wait . We have to have patience .

Did you expect to have rock solid depth less than 2 years into a rebuild?
I think it's completely fair to ask for "decent, not horrendous" as a baseline even in a rebuild. Especially in Year 2.

A decent bottom 6 is not difficult to build. The Rangers are the exception here, apparently.
