I watched Howden closely last night and I thought he played well defensively. Very positionally conscious. You are right about having no confidence on the offensive end.

The kid is still really young though. Give him 2-3 years and he should have added a bit more speed and strength, I think he will become more consistent when he get that done. Harder to contain in every battle.

What's going on with Kevin Hayes? The Rangers are expected to place Hayes on IR retroactive to last Wednesday and call up a forward from Hartford for the Islanders game on Thursday. It looks like Hayes has been ruled out for Thursday. Will he play before the All Star break? There are only more 14 games until the trading deadline when they return from the break. Two games in January and twelve games in February. The Rangers have seven games left before the break.

The Blueshirts will attempt to break the slide without Kevin Hayes, who will miss his third straight game with an unidentified “lingering issue.” The center, whose absence has been at least somewhat of a factor in the 6-1 and 5-0 defeats to Colorado and Arizona, respectively, has not skated since Wednesday.

The team is more likely than not to place Hayes on retroactive injured reserve in order to clear a roster spot for a recall from AHL Hartford for Thursday’s match at the Garden against the Islanders.

Hayes got hurt on December 14 against Arizona. He played in a noon start on the 16th against Vegas. Hayes played in eight straight games after getting hurt and then goes out of the lineup.

Not a ranger fan coming in peace with a sincere question.

Since the rangers are in a rebuild mode why aren't they trading lundquist? He's getting older and he could yield a massive return to bolster a rebuild.

My thinking is, if the rangers are in rebuild mode hank isn't in their long term vision.

Goalies never return the mother-load fans hope for.

Goalies that are closer to 40 than they are to 30 regardless of how good they once were do not net a great return.

Goalies that have 2 years remaining on a deal paying him 8+ per year do not get what fans would expect as a return.

Lastly, the Rangers asked if he wanted to go somewhere else and he said no.

Not for anything, but between some of the efforts last year and this year, I'm not really surprised there was a feeling within the organization that they needed to change the leadership and build a new culture.

The amount of sulking and hurt feelings from multiple players is impressive.

Its fuching pathetic

Both Hayes and Zucc are goners. McQuaid too. Likely a surprise deal as well - and a few minor plugs trading places too. Gorton will get creative /I think personally. Housecleaning is coming...

Sorry to mention Eklund but he states Hayes and Vegas. Remember there over payment for Tatar. Looking thru there depth Brannstrom pops up. 1st is probably 25 or lower. What makes sense? Also it could help others out west increase there offers.
Brannstrom would be off limits unless Hayes is signed and then traded.

Yes, because most people on planet earth don't ever get discouraged at their jobs.

He is a human being, it's not a shock when things like this get to a player. Just like you and I have bad days, weeks, even months at work, so too do athletes.

I just really wonder whether most posters on here have any self-awareness. It's pretty telling when a person can admit they're wrong or effected by something. I have no problem with him admitting it, I have no problem with the situation as it transpired. Honestly, the main issue i have is that Gorton didn't move him last year. Everyone and their mom knew Zucc would not last through this year and just dragging it out was a recipe for disaster.

Self awareness is one thing.

Self pity is quite another.

Grow the F up, be a F'ing adult and do what you are being paid very well to do.

No one is taking the game away from him. Hes still going to be an NHL'er.

If I sulked and under-performed at my job the way he has at his when things didn't go my way, not only would I be unemployed, I'd be unemployable.

Stop being an emotional midget and just be a short, but very good hockey player.

If playi g for a city means more than playing for a cup, then hes in the wrong line of work.

Dreger also discussed Lundqvist in his Edmonton radio hit

Lundqvist isn't going to be part of the turnaround. Someone needs to tell him that. Kevin Weekes said the same thing back in October on the NHL Network. He is buddies with Lundqvist. Hank thinks he will be on team when this team becomes good again. Weekes didn't believe that is going to happen.

If there's anyone who needs a break and skip the ASG, it's Lundqvist. Carey Price isn't going. Let Lundqvist play in the ASG.

6 players. 10 players. Trade list.

Three rentals
Hayes
Zuccarello
McQuaid

Kreider
Zibanejad
Namestnikov
Shattenkirk
Vesey
Skjei?
Fast?
Claesson-group II

That's 11. If you were to put 10 players on a trade list, it would be those players.

Buchnevich on that list?
Howden, Chytil and Pionk are no's.

Strome is making $3.1M. Good luck.
McLeod is not worth much.
Staal and Smith have two more years remaining.
Does DeAngelo have any value?
Georgiev?
Lundqvist is a no.
Nieves isn't worth much.

That's the entire roster.

From Brooks:
"“None of my teams are going to tank. I’ll never tell a team to lose,” Dolan said. “I think teams that tank are giving away something really big. I think they’re giving away that emotional development for the team. You can see how important that is.

“You have responsibility to the fans; fans pay for tickets and they deserve best game you can give them. That’s probably No. 1. But when you go in and tell a team, even if you’re just telling the coach, to lose the game, you’re dispiriting your team. That hurts more than getting a better draft pick helps. It’s hard to reignite the spirit of the team.”"

-------------------------------

From Custance "NHL Trade Big Board: 20 players who could move before the deadline Craig Custance":

"4. Kevin Hayes, Rangers: He’s big. He’s a center. He’s a rental. He’s everything a contending team like the Bruins or the Jets would love to plug into their lineup for the stretch run. Hayes has 33 points in 39 games and will be one of the biggest targets before the trade deadline. “He’s a really good player,” said one NHL source. “I think it’s buyer beware when he’s signing his next contract … but as a rental? Awesome. He’s not going to be a first-line center. Let’s say it’s the Bruins, he’ll be their third center. Then he’s really good.”"

"7. Chris Kreider, Rangers: It would have to take a significant offer to lure Kreider away from the Rangers. He’s already hit 20 goals this season. He’s got another year left on a team-friendly deal that has a cap hit of $4.625 million. But Kreider may be the best example of what one GM was referring to when he pointed to the Rangers as a one-stop shop for buying teams. If you want a rental forward, they have one. If you want a veteran forward with a good contract, they have one of those too. Need help on defense? They have just about any kind of player you like there. “The New York Rangers – they have every flavor you can imagine,” said the executive."

--------------------------------

Gorton have been shopping all his players around the league. He is laying the groundwork for a big sell-off. Dolan doesn't know another big sell-off is coming? ;) Good work by Gorton. Seriously though, you can't order your players to "lose". But they are not dumb, the message get their anyway. Their teammates that can play are sent elsewhere and they have nothing to play for. Every article written about the team keep tracks of their "rivals" at the wrong end of the standings the last months before the season ends.

The last skid has put us in a position to go for a high pick in the draft. Gorton must go for that pick. You want Jack Hughes, Kaakoo can become really good, there should be a good player available at 3-4.

I’m not a Dolan fan but he can’t exactly say “yeah, we’re tanking”

There’s nothing to take from his comments.

It's the same thing we've all been saying. Gorton is going to make whatever moves he deems necessary to improve this team in the future, but the coaches and players are going to try to win every game, regardless of who is on the team. That's as it should be. If anyone from the coaches on down were actively trying to lose, I'd be worried. I don't even think Gorton is trying to lose. Rather, he's trying to maximize his assets and a losing team is a product of that.

Some here may not want to hear this, but we can certainly infer from Gorton's comments and moves that he isn't looking for just picks. He puts a premium on prospects further along. So while Vegas is lacking draft picks, they may still have enough to be in the conversation.

I dunno.

There are a bunch of teams out of it or on the periphery.

Ottawa could single handedly **** us over if they decide to sell everyone.

Either that or other teams feel they need to improve when Stone and/or Duchene go to a competitor.

There aren't a lot of high profile centers available. It's basically Duchene and Hayes.

They’ll do fine with the Hayes return regardless. If duchene re-signs in Ottawa they’ll do even better.

They can control the market if they truly make everyone available but I doubt that happens. Like if they end up shipping out the ufa’s to be, kreider and Fast, they’re going to have a shit load of assets to play with.... plus they’re going to sink to bottom 3-5 in the standings

The Hayes bit has me concerned.

It seems too early for the McD treatment but maybe, just maybe that injury was too close for comfort... so they’ve decided to let the chips fall where they may on him... (value at all time high, nagging injury that’s been given PLENTY of time to heal). If however this is concussion protocol we could be f***ed with a rusty chainsaw.

If the Rangers have teams interested in Hayes, the smart thing to do is to see who can work out a contract with him prior to trading him. The return will be higher. To me, it's no surprise he started to be held out just after the New Year when, lo and behold, the team can start negotiating his new contract OR offer an opportunity to another team to begin negotiations with him.

For example:

What would a team like Buffalo give for Hayes as a rental?

What would a team like Buffalo give for a re-signed Hayes?
