I would try to work in a conditional element to the returned picks on a Zuccarello trade. Re-signing, playoff performance, etc. If he is truly slumping because of a broken heart and the weight of uncertainty, gamble on a return to form. The team may appreciate his play and extend.

If he is washed up because of age or attitude, well thems the breaks.

Nash was behind Zucc in more or less everything outside of pucks in net when we got a ****ing haul for him. The league knows whats up, he'll still give the Rangers a 1st round pick. Trade value is not based on your most recent games. Not sure what the return would be, but a 1st round pick is a given

Fair. Maybe the lack of production isn't as big of an issue given the supporting cast, but the lingering groin issue does impact things...move him now before that thing pops again.

This Hayes injury starting more and more to feel like protection for a trade. And it seems like it would be good for us that talks have started so soon and are going so long.
Good point. I hadn’t thought of that but it seems they have a track record of that.

For Alex Nylander?

Hey don’t piss on A Nyls. ;) I actually think he could be a decent pickup for us (at a cheap rate of course). He has a lot of hockey in him, good RHS playmaker/sniper. Smart.

I do feel that a change of scenary + fresh start could do a lot for him. I wouldn’t bet my right arm on it making him a NHLer, but he definitely has some really strong qualities too and it could be worth a gamble if the price is right.

It’s a bit of the curse that it can be to be a high pick. Everyone is super positive about Howden having a strong WJC for Canada and then coming into NY playing NHL caliber hockey this season. Meanwhile Alex Nyls is declared a bust by many despite being Sweden’s leading scorer at two WJCs — prior — to last year’s tournament where he also did great. They are the same age. These kids need to believe in what they are doing too. They are teenagers, not machines.

Eh, still way too soon for that IMO, deadline isn't for another 8 weeks or so. Hayes also looked out of his a bit his last 2 games so I believe he is injured.

Wasn’t he scoring at a pretty impressive clip the last three games he played?

EDIT: Just checked, and nope. 9 game points streak, but then pointless against STL and PIT

Seriously. Every year half this site gets amnesia about what deadline returns look like. A player like Zucc returning a 3rd and a 5th would be unprecedented.
I don't know if we'd deal with Columbus. We did before, but that was before they were in our division.

Bobrovsky and Panarin are expiring.

They've shown no interest in signing Panarin and negotiations with Bobrovsky aren't progressing. If those two go, the Blue Jackets go.

Despite that, they've also shown no interest in trading either of them, and they see this year as a kick at the can.

I have them on defcon 1 "do something stupid at the deadline" watch.

Why don't you just come up with a bag of pucks and some used Zamboni tires.
The deal breaker for me is we have to keep the recipe for Mats’ meatballs. Above all else, I’m willing to accept a lesser offer for him like say a 7th and/or future considerations, if they allow us to keep the recipe. If the acquiring team doesn’t allow us to keep the recipe, they can look somewhere else for a winger.

Even if Torts reformed his ideas some after the Vancouver fiasco I don’t think they have a sustainable idea on how to play the game. With that said, the fact they are pissing so much away in terms of creativity have also made the entire organization underperform for many years. As a consequence they draft much higher than they should and players are paid less than they should, their depth and quality on the roster is IMO starting to get a bit scary.

People will point at the flaws they have. That is definitely Torts biggest strength, he is a master of lifting up whatever flaws his team have and blaming everything on it. In this cap world — what teams does not have many major flaws? Look at the blueline that Pittsburgh have won two cups with, and so forth.

Like seriously, this is their top 18 skaters from hockeydb:

There is so many players in their absolute prime among those names, so much force, size, speed, skill, character. There are not many teams that can match that.

They should really contend this year. The fact that they aren’t doing better than they are spells John Tortorella. They should be able to Vegas the East...
