What am I missing with Scherbak? Why can't he stick with the lowly Kings this year that have been decimated by injuries?

Schmaltz would be an interesting reclamation project if we didn't already have a million bottom pairing and tweener defensemen.

Hopefully Gorton can remedy this at or near the deadline...

Florida just acquired Wideman in exchange for Petrovic. Edmonton acquits himearlier this year for a pick.

I’d look at both Scherback and Schmaltz
Blues fans used to have a pretty high evaluation of Schmaltz, but at 25 he's failed to break single-digit points with the big club and couldn't beat out Bortuzzo for a spot. He looks like a wash to me, and wouldn't crack our lineup even with a couple injuries. I'm slightly curious about Scherbek, but Crow makes a good point.

We should try to move all of Smith Shattenkirk Staal McQuaid, but its kind of infuriating to have both Smith and McQuaid, be showcasing both Smith and McQuaid, and watching ADA and/or Claesson sit mostly because of that

Going by consensus rankings, and going BPA instead of who we actually drafted, this is what we'd end up with:

2007 NYR: Alexei Cherepanov
2007 BPA: Angelo Esposito

2008 NYR: Michael Del Zotto
2008 BPA: Mattias Tedenby

2009 NYR: Chris Kreider
2009 BPA: Jordan Schroeder

2011 NYR: JT Miller
2011 BPA: Joel Armia

2012 NYR: Brady Skjei
2012 BPA: Matt Finn

This is great, but I think it also solidifies the fact that when you draft where the Rangers were drafting for all those years, a superstar is more than likely not in the offing either way you cut it.

Schmaltz has a really good skillset, but he's been braindead at decision making at the NHL level. It seemed like something he could maybe grow from and learn out of, but he's never really taken that step.

I do think we need to find a way to get another RHD down in Hartford, especially since they've been icing 6 LHD lately.

But:

2007 - Pacioretty 5 selections after Cherepanov
2008 - Eberle 2 selections after Del Zotto
2009 - Kreider :thumbu:
2010 - Horse beat to death
2011 - Miller :thumbu:
2012 - Skjei :thumbu:

Our scouting is great, but its a lot better than it was ten years ago.

Blues would probably be fine with trading Schmaltz for O'Gara or someone like that once Schmaltz clears waivers. But I don't think Schmaltz is as good as Gilmour, who is the same age and plays RD

THE ATHLETIC: George Richards reports it appears likely the Florida Panthers will pursue a starting goaltender at the trade deadline or this summer via free agency. He believes Columbus Blue Jackets netminder Sergei Bobrovsky will be their No. 1 target. Bobrovsky owns a condo in Miami. He and teammate (and fellow pending UFA) Artemi Panarin are both rumored to be interested in playing in Florida going forward, either with the Panthers or Tampa Bay Lightning.

Both of the AHL teams they're affiliated with are lefty heavy as well, so maybe it's not a good fit. Schmaltz has another year left on his contract too

We were talking about getting Smith to replace Klein and I looked up Del Zotto. We could’ve drafted John Carlson or Jordan Eberle instead of Del Zotto!
MDZ had seasons of 37 and 41 points 2 of his first 3 years. That he regressed once he hit 23 years old looks a lot like a Del Zotto problem more than a NYR talent evaluation problem. Kid likes the ladies and the nightlife.
