This whole conversation is jumping the gun. Im not sure why fans can't enjoy the development of both Fox and DeAngelo without worrying about their next contracts and long-term ramifications. When you attribute benchmarks to a player that he's yet to ever reach, it muddies the issue even further.

The ironic thing is I bet this kind of stuff is the furthest thing from Gorton's mind - he'll worry about it in the offseason, when the results are actually in.

I do fundamentally agree with this, but there really isn't much of this kind of thing to talk about for this season's roster construction. We've talked about Kreider's situation for a year now and there's nothing new on that front.

Fox and deangelo are like uber on a free 3 year deal, and a car service that'll get u places but theres a large bill comin. Which would you prefer?

I'd really like them to try ADA on the left side for an extended term. IIRC, they played him on a pair with Shattenkirk on the left side for a bit last season.

if we can somehow fit a new deal into the framework of our cap and have ADA under control on a reasonable hit for the next 2-3 yrs, i dont see how we dont make that happen.

the right side right now is a dangerous mix of talent that other teams im sure drool over, and that is including the defensive "issues" that come with the river boat gambler offensive ability of tony deangelo.

those 3 are set for the foreseeable future.

lets address the other side of the defense and not make a strength a weakness by moving ADA.

One guy who was on the block last year who I could see the Rangers being interested in, depending on the price, is Jason Zucker. Minnesota may want to off-load salary and there aren't many spots to do so. He's a pretty consistent 45-55 point winger with great speed and a good 2-way game. 27 years old.

Perhaps something like:

Kreider to BOS for Trent Frederic + BOS 1st

Brett Howden + Joey Keane for Jason Zucker

If we are trading Kreider for that package, I'm not interested in then trading for Zucker. I don't see him as a long term piece.

I suggested Kreider for Zucker during the offseason when it looked like Zucker was going to be traded. My rationale at the time was that the move would be a compromise between trading Kreider for futures and re-signing him, and we could then flip Zucker at a later time. After this season, Zucker will have 3 years left at 5.5 mil. He'll be 30 when his contract ends. Kreider will be 29 when his next contract starts and he'll almost certainly get more money and term than Zucker.

Zucker's stock was down at the time too, which might have meant additional assets coming our way. With Zucc signing in Minnesota, adding Kreider might have been a good fit for them. Now I don't think that's a possibility, and I'm not sure that Minnesota would be interested either, given that they are still in "win" mode. They have too much money tied up in older players, with too much term left, to start trading guys like Zucker for futures. That could change if they fall out of the playoff race, but they have been good after getting off to a bad start. I think they are going to be in it up to the end.

If I’m moving ADA today then I want a youngish 60+ point center or youngish 30+ goal winger... preferably a more north/south player. I’d add to ADA for the right guy but I’m not moving him for some run of the mill 40 point player. I also have no problem locking up ADA long term if that’s the decision.

Pretty simple solution to that deal....we just KEEP ADA and make him our 3rd line Center ...PPQB and Rover when he is needed . The way the Cap is going these days if you can find a guy that can play up and back...you have something worth keeping !!! This kid has wheels...wicked passing skills and vision and some nastiness.....WTF other skills would we require for a third line Center ...he would drive an opposing Center absolutely crazy in a checking/shutdown role . He can skate with anyone . The only skill he would need to work on would be draws !!! And....with his hand eye coordination I think he would be a dandy at that too . Let's not be so quick to ship him out for a fair return.....he might just be the answer to a lot of our problems . I think he could play the position like a Doug Gilmour...same tenacity and skill set . LOL....well maybe not quite Gilmour like....but he could come close to it he has that kind of skill set and with a Buch on his wing ....who knows ??? Could be the makings of a league best checking line we lack . Solve some of our defensive woes as well . [Mods...I cross posted this in the ADA thread...so this one can be deleted if you wish.] Thanks...

@Edge any word on whether Keller is available? 21 points in 33 games for $7.15m seems like something a team like the Coyotoes wouldn't be overly pleased with. He's on pace for like 12-13 goals this year

I disagree with this. This is the type of thing GM's are paid to be thinking about.

Been reading the Bruins forum and despite his slow start offensively they seem very bullish on Frederic as a tough-to-play-against bottom 6 forward, which we could definitely use.

Even if we don't get a ton of offense from a 3C, any kind of nonoffensive contributions would likely be a boost over what we have been getting from Howden and Andersson thus far.

As president of the McKegg fan club, he guy is a stop gap and should not be expected to be the 4C on a good cup contending team.

So sure, Frederic+ Would be an interesting return for Kreider. Highly doubt they would move Studnicka, whose name is just too perfect to trade.

There have been rumblings about not being happy with how the last two years have gone, and chatter about not everyone being a fan of the contract they gave him, but there's nothing doing there right now.

Personally, I think if things keep going down this path, it could be something that emerges, but that's a ways off. I will say that people are definitely keeping one eye out west to see if it becomes a "thing" at some point.

Frederic is the guy I was hoping was coming back for Nash. He was also the guy we all were thinking they were targeting for Hayes last year but they got Lemieux (better player). Frederic would be unique in this organization, very similar to the way Lemieux is.

I bet Kreider goes to the Yotes, reunites with Stepan. Arizona is in a playoff spot 5th in the west. I can see them making a big move

Crouse and 1st for Kreider? I would love Frederic, Studnicka, Crouse type?

Carolina has our 2nd so they have 2 picks in each of the 3 rounds.............trade Kreider for 1 of the Firsts and a descent prospect

Regarding a match up with CK/Arizona...given all the above discussion about the system being heavy with RHD, what about targeting Kevin Bahl as part of the return?

We already have a ton of LD prospects. If they really believe that Bahl can be a 1LD, then sure, but if he's just going to be another body on the left side, I'd rather target a different position.

Don't disagree, he just may be a guy who is a different type of D than we have in the system.

With all of the pieces we currently have in the roster players and a/b prospects, you've got to think if Gorts can grab a young potentially deadly winger. Man would that set this team up even further. Having the wings getting beefier, will only insulate our young centers we need to succeed.

I think Gorts is being patient. He probably sees that players like ADA and Lundvkvist are both trending upward, so let them continue to do so. It will only increase their trade values. Let's let things play out a bit. There will be lethal wingers up for grabs next year as well.
