They're blowing up Core 2. Very interesting team. Maroon hasn't worked out for them, and I fully expect him and Bortuzzo to move despite a no-trade. Their forward contracts of Schenn-Schwartz-Bozak-Perron aren't unmoveable, but man are they undesirable. They'll get something for the former two, but UFA signings have not worked at all.

I wonder what Tarasenko is going to bring back. That's your "rebuilding block".
I wonder who would be interested in Tarasenko? Carolina is obvious. Minnesota needs a game breaker.

Don't see where the Rangers and Blues are a good fit. I can't imagine they're looking to move their roster players for other roster players.

Don't know. I don't think you can give up that type of scoring and not have a reliable top 6 piece coming back. Don't think CAR has that, and defensemen alone won't get it done.

They may think that, but come February, Hayes is going to be one the better value adds a team can add. I can see OTT dealing Duchene and Stone. I don't see CLB as sellers. After that, you've got Nyqvist and maybe some sell-offs from the Islanders as the top 6 options. Not too many centers, and there are a number of teams that want centers who won't pay a premium on Duchene.

My hopes are that Gorts gets things done early. Last year there was a potential Zucc deal that came in too late. If I were Gorts, I would move quickly on the teams that pass on Nyqvist and Duchene (if available) and get Zucc and Hayes done. It's a different set of parameters than trading a McDonagh and Miller.

They need to have their acceptable value set, and terms outlined early on.

I agree for the most part, though I don't see Ottawa dealing Stone or Duchene; I think they'll try to re-sign both guys. Hayes could very well be the best center on the market come the deadline, but it would behoove Gorton to get out ahead of the market to deal his pieces. The real story will be whether or not he can get Hayes dealt with an extension in place or if he can include some conditions that kick in if a team signs him long term before July 1st.

The problem for me is once you remove the guys who are likely off limits for a rental (Makar, Kaut, Jost, Timmins, etc), the Avs pool isn't all that enticing. They've done a very average job of drafting outside of a few major hits in the first round. One guy I do like is AJ Greer. He's still a work in progress, but he'd be a nice complimentary winger on a scoring line that can be physical, create space, and still be able to contribute offensively. Something like the Avs 1st, Greer, and Ottawa's 3rd this year would be good for me as a rental. Maybe make the 3rd conditional that it becomes a 2nd in 2020 if the Avs re-sign Hayes.

The other somewhat interesting option is Shane Bowers. Though his production has fallen off a cliff since Tkachuk left I think I saw that he's still generating like 2 or 3 shots per game and his shooting % is in the toilet. He could be another guy who compliments better players and he has a bit more offensive upside than Greer.

A project and a couple lottery tickets would be a very good return for Hayes as a rental.

I'll believe Fox signs with the Canes when I see it

What else is he supposed to say to a beat reporter for Carolina? "Oh yeah my plan is to go back for my senior year and get my pick of where to play next summer"

Of course not. Vesey said the same **** during his time with Nashville

He says he wants to play in the NHL as quickly as possible, but the Flames rolled out the red carpet to get him signed this past summer and put him in the lineup immediately and he said no thanks. So what am I missing here

That said the Rangers should trade for him. He's someone they should be targeting in a Hayes deal

Anyone know what the first origin of Fox to NY talk was coming from? I remember reading years ago how he supposedly has his sights set on the Rangers, you know the typical ‘I know people in college who says ...’

Both Greer and Bowers would be well known quantities to the Rangers, and you're right, it does get thin after their better prospects. This isn't a surprise year for COL, and they can take a step with a piece like Hayes. He fits them like a glove. Center with size that can play on the 2nd unit. Take any defensive pressure off of Mack between him and Soderberg. COL has a bunch of speedy wingers that will cover up Kevin's short-comings and open up the ice.

I'm more inclined towards Bowers than Greer simply due to the collegiate flame-out that Greer had. Maybe he didn't get the opportunity on a couple of deep teams, but he did well in other leagues. But that package would be more than adequate for a rental. But we know how frugal Sakic is... and add to that he's never bought at the deadline before.

You might have a guy that's just not going to pay a price.

Brooks selling his soul sucking up for Shatty. Any sane reporter would have yelled for Gorton to dump Shatty ASAP as his NMC was expiring last summer. Sorry, we are rebuilding, it’s not you it’s me. Not even a big thing PR wise or whatever people are worrying about.

Now Gorts stuck with this mess. Between Girardis BO, Staal, Smith and Shatty’s contract, it’s not good at all. Horrible for the rebuild. In 2020/21 it’s not going to be good to have like 1/4 of our cap spent on those guys.

CGY tried to sign him after his freshmen year and sophmore year, and he turned down the deals. The rumor was that he didn't intend on playing out West.... and since they couldn't come to terms he was on the block.

Simply put, and I think CGY is right about this, that Fox is too good for the collegiate level. He was ready for the next step two years ago. This year, he's just toying with the competition. So the question is, and was... if he's ready to take the step on hockey terms, why wouldn't he?

...Especially considering CGY was willing to burn a year off of the ELC so he can cash in earlier...

I think Adam is saying the right things. But I'd still like to see him hit UFA and sign here despite his comments.

I want Fox and Addison. Overload that right side of the D.

Actually, I think it’s had asset management.

Why? Go back 5-10 years and you had like 1-2 smaller RHS PMDs drafted in the top 1-2 rounds. Now you had what 4 in the first and just as many LHS. More than a 1/4 of all picks were small PMDs in the first round.

It’s simple math. Soon almost all teams will have a couple of guys that fits this bill. I’ve been obsessing about getting a RHS PPQB since we traded Mat Schneider. There used to be like 4-5 guys in the entire world outside the NHL/new in the NHL that looked good. You had like a Vaatanen and 2-3 more like him around the league. The you need a RHS PMD today and sit down and try to map who is out there, you get like a list of 20 candidates...

I just don’t think these guys will be that valuable as they have been. The top guys will of course be, but if ANA is trading Vaatanen in 5 years as opposed to 1.5 years ago — I think they get a lot less.

At most they might move pending UFAs. They just changed systems, know they might do it again. They might have finally realized that Allen won’t get them to a Cup, no matter who plays in front of him. I don’t see them blowing up their young core, but they move one of Pietrangelo/Parayko if it makes them a better team.
