Tage Thompson is an intriguing name from the Sabres. I think he's still figuring out how to apply his game as a pro but his ceiling is exactly the sort of player the Rangers seem to want to add. Buffalo has a lot of "meh" in their pipeline but he's an interesting possibility. Fits that mold of a young pro player with upside I think the Rangers could favor over more picks.

While we are going on a streak of guys the Rangers should target, I am going to bring up Hampus Lindholm again. Just because.

Good player but doubt he’s available.
Why wouldn’t he be? Ducks are rebuilding and Fowler can take those minutes. Lindholm only has two years left on his (very reasonable) deal. Rangers have enough assets to get basically anyone. Ducks tried to get Faulk in the offseason and DeAngelo is better, younger and under RFA control. We also know they were big K’Andre Miller fans. Not that I would want to trade Miller but for 25/26 year old 1D under contract I’m making that move. This is the kind of guy you move some futures for and getting a top pair caliber LHD puts everyone else in their correct spot.

Lindholm would be incredible. Exactly what we could use at LD
I actually think he is the only realistic target that makes sense for 1LHD. Ducks are one of the five worst teams this year and are still phasing their old guard out. I don’t see why they wouldn’t make a move for futures and the Rangers can certainly make a fair offer.

Buch + Georgiev would be my offer for Lindholm. I love Buch tho so i’d like a small add from Anaheim as well.
Don’t think they need a goalie (and I don’t think I move Georgiev) but no problem trading Buchnevich in that kind of deal.

Doesn’t get you Lindholm.

I’d look at Hanifin. Calgary is gonna make some serious changes and I think he’s very solid. Lindholm is definitely a good target. Ekholm if Nashville continues to be mediocre.

Oh, you don’t need to make a case for him. He would be a great add. Just got the feeling he might be a lifer there.

Don’t think Rangers and Calgary match up at all. Also Hanifin is as much of a 1D as Skjei is. Doesn’t make Rangers better. Also Calgary’s D is pretty old. Think there are some other guys they move first. I was never a big Hanifin guy. Not to speculate but he has only had one coach besides Geoff Ward his entire NHL career. He may have had a rough development.

Don’t see any reason Nashville moves Ekholm either. His contract is rebuild proof and Nashville is t going to blow up that roster. They get rid of Laviolette before making any big deals.

Maybe not this deadline but after this season for sure, Ducks should be going into rebuilding mode and we should have the assets to make a deal for someone like him.

Ducks are in rebuild mode already. They aren’t getting better in a year and will get more value now than if they move him as a rental.

What about buchnevich and skjei?
Ask Anaheim. I know for a fact they tried to trade for Justin Faulk last off-season and he vetoed. They probably want RHD which, if the Rangers are planning to lose DeAngelo, may as well use him here. Better younger, and RFA controlled unlike Faulk. And we also know they like K’Andre Miller so Rangers May be able to keep their 2020 1st. Or if they have to move it they can try to either protect it, or get back in the first round with a Kreider or Strome trade.

They have a lot of options.

Why are we trading for Lindholm? I just don’t understand the thinking here. Especially when we are trading multiple pieces* for a 30 point defenseman who was at a time a blue chip prospect but now is 25 years old and has seemingly settled on what he will be unless some see he his game taking a significant jump that we would be willing to trade one player outproducing him let alone a 2nd asset whether it be Miller or, god help us, a 1st round pick....

We have a stockpile of LD in the system. Two are at the NHL level and there are more on the cusp/on the way.

If you want to move Buchnevich who is seemingly hitting his stride, then it should be for a young NHL center on the rise as well. Or as part of a package for a better center/winger.

Sorry, just don’t see the obsession with Lindholm.

Edit: Skjei and Lindholm, on the surface, are extremely similar. Same age. About the same average of point production. Both LD. Similar cap hit, with Skjei locked up 2-3 years longer. What is the infatuation? To me this is a case of the grass is greener. Skjei gets a lot of crap for his inconsistent play around here, but who is to say the same won’t happen to Lindholm once he is in this defensive system?

Well I definitely don’t think Lindhom’s allure is in his offensive game, but I tend to agree. I wouldn’t target Lindholm with the price it would take to get him. Krug is a UFA this summer. He’ll probably get a fat raise, but that’s more in line with someone I’d pair with Trouba and wouldn’t cost us assets. I’d also look at a guy like Martinez from LA. But, I don’t think we’re looking at offensive production so much as a 20+ minute plus defensive player. Between ADA, Fox and Trouba I think we have good offensive blue liners. Adding offensive punch on the back end doesn’t hurt, but I think we need guys who can defend at a high level and simply move the puck up ice to let our offense dive guys take over.
