With Nieves coming up and Gettinger going down, it's interesting from this perspective. The Rangers are really concerned about preserving cap space. That intrigues me. They could have easily put Mika or Staal on the IR.

That's correct. You can use that contract money on a replacement player(s) but you aren't able to get that per day savings. You also can't use the space to pay for any bonuses if I remember correctly.

No, but both IR and LTIR free up a roster spot, which was Bobbop's point. We could have easily afforded to carry both Gettinger and Nieves.

I'm not sure what you are being sarcastic about. Without the Shatty buyout, we wouldn't have been cap compliant to start the season. That 13.3 mil number is a prorated amount.

Buying out Shatty was a no-brainer.

The big mistake was not buying out Staal and Smith at the same time, and lock up Buch, TDA and Lemieux long-term on what -- already -- would be great contracts.

Even if they had the cap space I doubt the team would have gone long term with DeAngelo. And there was a less than zero chance they went more than a year with Lemieux who had done nothing prior to last year

Tkachuk couldn’t possibly be available, could he? I’m not a huge Gaudreau fan fwiw. I’m just not seeing a good match with Calgary. Not with Calgary in the Seller role, at least. Might be a match if Calgary is buying, though.

Seems very unlikely.

But just like MTL with Subban, when you know that you have to pay big dollars to a player, it of course affects the equation. Calgary traded Phaneuf very shortly after he was seen like a given long term face of the franchise. I recon that they saw what was coming and that it was a good move for sure. Tkachuck can take an arbitration award of 9+m to UFA at the age of 24. Request 8 years and 12m per. Is he a guy you want to pay top dollars for years 25-33?

There were some rumblings about Tkachuk like a year ago. RB mentioned it.
