The Rangers are obviously in rough this year and probably next, but there is truly a lot to he excited about for the future (starting 2 years from now)

Let’s start with the draft this year. I expect that our draft pick will be somewhere in the top 10 again, and the Zuccarello trade that is inevitable (sad i wish hed resign as veteran presence and be captain), should yield a second first round pick. Between Boston and Winnipeg and maybe a few others fighting for Hayes, we should be able to garner a 3rd 1st round pick out of that, and I believe that could really yield some good to great prospects.

Forwards

panarin-chytil-kravtsov
kreider-zibanejad-buchnevich
Howden-Andersson-Vesey/Fast
gettinger-FA/prospect-ronning/meskanen

- Kravtsov likely won’t be ready for a first line role in what would prsumably be his 2nd NHL season in 2020-2021, but it’s nice to imagine a line with him, the surpremely talented and likely 55-65 point centre in Chytil and the always dynamic Panarin. others may not be as high on chytil, but i really really like his game...dont see him ever being overly elite, but he should become 1A to zibanejads 1B.

- KZB forever baby!! in this scenario im assuming kreiders extension along with him being names captain kept him here. Zibanejad is a great first like center and gives us an elite second line centre when Chytil surpasses him. I don’t know how i feel about buch’s high end ceiling being elite and if he will ever meet that or not, but he’s a good enough 2nd liner...if he reaches that ceiling of an elite winger, switch him and kravtsov

- Had to choose between howden or lias as the 3rd line C, and i chose andersson. He could ultimately develop into a solid 50 point second liner, but hes been very underwhelming so far. howden has shown flashes of offense this year, but i 100% am firmly entrenched in the thinking that hes a great third liner and nothing more. Vesey has proven this season he does have another level, ultimately he could leave and a hartford product could take this role and it would have little to no effect, or fast could stick around and play here. i assumed rangers would choose between vesey and fast and ultimately choose vesey

- if rangers get to keep both vesey and fast, one could slot down on 4th line, and ronning would move to center. i think rangers are ultimately done with nieves and he’ll move on. this has the look of a really solid 4th line. could sign a veteran centre to play with the yonug kids should fast/vesey not stick around...assuming they would both come in around 2.5/3.5 million on a 3/4 year deal

- I’m going to assume we get a Kreider extension done on the basis its a 5-6 year deal in the 6.5 million ballpark.

- Guessing Buch signs about a 5/6 year deal worth ~4.8-5.5 million. Don’t know if thats unrealistic (let me know) but hes not breaking out this year so i dont see his price going up astronomically.

- Along with the signing of Panarin :) this offseason, Kravtsov is the biggest addition to this group

Defense

skjei-deangelo
lindgren-shattenkirk
hajek/rykov-pionk
staal

-ive liked what ive seen from the pairing of skjei and deangelo when theyve been together. i think the rangers jumped the gun with their long term, big money deal they gave to skjei, but i think hes still got a small chance of becoming what mcdonagh was. issue is thats a small chance. it would be great if the rangers could get a #1 D, but they dont grow on trees and even if they get one in next years draft, he wouldnt be ready for 1st pairing minutes this soon.

- i think lindgren, who can skate but has that old school hitting shutdown style could pair very well with shattenkirk. this pairings placement as second pair isnt a prediction on how good i think lindgren will be (i think hes more of a high end 3rd pairing d), but he matches best with shattenkirks game.

- this was a tough one. hajek and rykov both has potential to become a top 4 defenseman in the league, but only one can get the spot. pionk has shown great offensive capabilities and i really hope he can improve his defense and then he could be top 4d potential and this pair could swap with the shattenkirk pair

- staal could be boughtout by this time but im assuming hes still here at a vet.

~ assuming brendan smith is subject to a buyout/bury in minors

- obviously im putting my money on k’andre miller and nils lundkvist are playing in hartford and being ready in the seasons following

- notably missing here is joey keane, who has seen his stock rise considerably since draft day, looks like a possible steal and potential top 4 D.

- this is not even considering sean day as a possible player, who i thin could be a nice skating 3rd pairing d, but we shall see

Goalies

lundqvist
shestyorkin

- what can i say...one more run with the king as the starter because he will still be elite, mark my words. shestyorkin can play 30-40 games to keep hank fresh for the playoff run. then, resign hank and transition is to a platoon and eventually shestyorkin takes over with hank as backup.

- i get nervous about this because i feel like hank can be one of the goalies who can be elite until the day he retires, but i dont want them to stunt shestyorkins growth. this rips me apart bexause hes the future but i feel like hank will still be able to start, and it wont suffice for him to be a backup
- dont know what rangers are going to get for georgiev in the talbot/raanta esque trade hes going to be involved in....just shows how much potential there is for this teams future.

Cap outlook

(~)9.5 - 0.894 - 0.925
(~)6.5 - 5.35 - (~)4.8/5.5
0.863 - 0.894 - (~)2.5/3.5
(~)0.9/1.5 - (~)1.5/2 - (~)0.9/1.5
(~)0.9 ~ (~)0.9

5.25 - (~)2.5/3.5
0.925 - 6.5
0.833/(~)0.925 - (~)2.5/3.5
5.7

8.5
0.925

Total: $71.884M-$77.284M
(one of vesey/fast, including Rykov and Hajek on roster)

Total: $73.484M-$79.884M
(both of vesey/fast, removing $0.9M depth forward, Rykov and Hajek on roster)

The expected cap ceiling is $90M+ so this just shows the potential to get an upgrade on defense (trouba anyone?). Although the Rangers wouldn't be able to go crazy with Chytil, Andersson, Howden...etc needing second contracts.
This poem was beautiful

Is Zibanejad joining the foreign legion? Otherwise he's either on the team or traded for assets. I would imagine the same could be said for Hayes, Zucc and Buchnevich. So that will probably replace some of the talent we lose. You can't just pluck all the names you like off a roster and not think about the transactions that send them to other teams.

It's also weird that Pionk isn't there.

I foresee Zibanejad (I’m worried about his concussion history and feel like he’s 1 hit away from being Sauer) Hayes Zucc and Buchnevich (very over rated imho) to be traded for younger up and coming players or high picks.

What do you consider "elite"? Judging by what you are putting down, it seems that being a legit top liner is not considered "elite". In which case, I am asking what does?

Elite puts you top 3-5 in your position in the league!

Why are you moving Zibanejad?

See above.

The cap ceiling isn't going to be $90m.
I think from preliminary talks the upper limit will be around $83m
next years salary cap is rumored to be 83 million, up ~ 4 ish from this year, continueing that growth, mayne 87 million would be a better estimation

Colorado and Buffalo each have 2 first rounders this year. Currently, both clubs appear to be playoff teams. Those would be the first calls GMJG should make regarding Hayes and Zuccarello. There's already been some chatter here with Zucc being a good fit in Buff. Colorado likely isn't looking for a 2nd line Center, however you can never be too deep at C for a potential playoff run.

Would like to see what some of the posters here would think is a fair deal between those clubs and the Rangers either now or at the deadline.

Have to wonder though are the NY Rangers even looking to add more assets as in picks? They have selected 5 First rounders in the past 2 seasons. If they succeed in this method again by trading #13, #36, one of the additional picks should be used to move out one of the albatross D contracts, and get a lesser player in return. Rangers have $21.9 Million locked up in 4 defenseman. Over $25 mil with Girardi's buyout lingering.

Im sure Ott would love to get back into this years first round. If Zucc and Hayes were moved for 1st's, i would gladly part with one of them to get rid of one of the big 4 contracts on D. For Ott, every one of those D contracts are front loaded so actual dollar is obviously less.

My bet is that 83m is a bit low. There will basically not be any escrow this season (there is escrow, but the money will almost entirely be returned). It’s possible to count backwards from the numbers Brooks had and I have not done that — but the indication from the low escrow is that the NHL is doing really well again this year.

The inflator was only used to 1.5% last season before being 2.5% the year before that. So growth was well over 5%.

Vegas is doing very well financially which is helping things. My low bet is 83.5 but I wouldn’t be shocked if we saw next years cap go up towards 85m either... To go north of that we probably need a loonie effect.

Why? What do we need the cap space for? Smith and Staal each have 2 years left. It's possible that one or both could be traded if we retain, or if absolutely necessary, one can be bought out.

One of the last things we should be doing during a rebuild is spending 1st round picks to get rid of the dead weight, no matter how many 1st rounders we have.

Shattenkirk back to St. Louis? Pleaaaaaase.

Brendan Smith is who I had in mind. JBo has been BAD this year. The Blues send him back this way and the Rangers can move him at the deadline. Smith gives them someone to pair with Parayko or Pietrangelo as the stay-at-home guy with either of those guys for the next couple of years.

That’s a deal they probably would do.

Can't see anyone wanting Smith's full contract for the next 2 years. Either we retain or take back a contract with term.

That's possible. JBo has a cap hit of $5.4 this year an total salary of $5.4m.

Smith's cap hit is $4.35m per year for this year and (2) more years.

The Blues save ~$1.05m on the cap this year

JBo's real salary is $5.4m this year

Smith's salary for the remaining seasons are $4.525m, $4.525m and $3.35m.

So depending on when the trade is made, the Blues would save themselves some real $$ this year and get Smith at a 'real cap hit' of $3.9375m per season for (2) seasons.

The Blues have a couple of guys in the minors with 1-way contracts this year, perhaps they want to move them to off-load some more salary on their books? Guys like Jordan Nolan, Chris Thorburn and Nikita Soshnikov

Blues probably would see Smith as someone they could flexibly play LD/RD third pair or second pair, depending on injuries which are now piling up. It’s not a horrible contract as long as Smith plays the way he’s been playing this season.

Jbo is their Staal. They don’t really have options on moving him until the contract is up.

The Rangers have only 34 games left until the trade deadline. They played 28. They have 20 after the deadline. They need to get Zuccarello healthy. Give him as much time as he needs to get him healthy and he returns to the lineup for good until the deadline.

McQuaid should be back within the next two weeks. The Rangers gave up a 4th and 7th for him. He serves two purposes. McQuaid will show he is healthy enough to be traded and he is terrible so he will help the Rangers lose more games.
