Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XVI (Playoffs or Retool?)

Alternative take; new core and new dust next season means we waste the first 20 games with every finding their feet and working out which lines/combos work.
Get the trade done this year and start setting the conditions and combos so we can hit the ground running next season

Idk why people keep wanting to push these moves to improve the team until the summer. There are 34 games left and we have a 50% chance at the playoffs. We won the President's Trophy last year and have advanced to 2/3 ECFs. That doesnt scream rebuild to me. I just watched the worse month of Rangers hockey Ive seen in a decade, where everyone said we'd be dead and buried (including myself). Guess what? We are a 4 points out with 2 games in hand, and jumped 3 teams in the past week. We've left points on the table even in this solid stretch. And if anyone comes at me saying they dont want to back in as a wild card, spare me. We were the overall 1 seed and it didnt do crap for us last year. Just get in is every teams goal, but Rangers fans are too entitled; we should just quit instead. Loser mentality permeates the locker room and fanbase. Sorry if that offends some people.

if we’re that mid this year, we might be worse next year.

We might be worse next year. We might be better next year. I'd rather give up the 10th this year for sure than the chance of giving up a top 3 pick next year, even if the most likely outcome is to give up a pick in the low 20s next year.

Does the leverage really shift though? If we lose 3/4 it makes it less likely this team is going anywhere and less urgent that we make any move before the TDL... Meanwhile, VAN has the immediate problem they need to sort out... At least that's how I see it.

It does because JT is a long term solution for the Rangers. They aren't trading for him for just this year.

I can live with that issue. My hang up is mostly the pick. If Drury can get it lottery protected, sure. Go ahead and make it today. That'll largely derisk the trade. If he can't and pushes it until after the draft then you force it to be a 2026 pick.

Olivier would be great with Edstrom and Carrick.

And Just give me a Lindgren upgrade and I’d be content.

The guy who intrigues me a bit, mainly because I think he gets peanuts on his next deal, is Jeannot. I think Olivier gets overpaid.

In saying that, I don't see a real need to go out and sign a bottom-6 forward with Berard, Othmann, Chmelar, Sykora, Edstrom, Rempe pushing for spots. You could convince me of a really low salary veteran (similar to Carrick was) to augment that group and be insurance in case some of these younger players need more time but paying something like $2-2.5m (which is what I expect Olivier to get) seems like a bad idea.

They need a 3rd line center. Kreider for Frederic and a 1st from Boston is something I've liked.

We gave up a second round pick for a player that was literally untradeable to any other team in the league.

I realize second rounds picks are a crap shoot... but they aren't throw in's.

Retrospectively you make that trade all day long... but at the time, we still weren't sure what Fox was.
Fox was one of the highest regarded players outside of the NHL when we traded for him. Did anyone see him winning a NORRIS so quick? No. Was it a surprise he is a top notch D man? Also no. It was a steal at the time and in retrospect the Luftansa heist.

Every f***ing time. This is Guentzel all over again.

Lol at the thought that Brady Tkachuk was available.

I'm sure the Rangers wanted him, but the Senators want him too.

Guentzel would have allowed them to sweep the first 2 rounds instead of sweeping the opener and winning in 6.

They would have still lost to Florida.

I think this is the wrong thing to rip Drury for. Taking a hard stance on these moves is the right way to go. I say this as someone who would have booted Panarin in a heart beat to ink Guentzel. The former wasn't happening even if it should have IMO.

If we want to rip him, rip him for allowing Lindgren to continue being a thing here. He was the biggest hole on a team that was otherwise pretty good last year and he and Trouba were why they ended up losing eventually, Guentzel wouldn't have changed that. Trouba's situation was complicated but Lindgren's has never been, thats a spot that could have and should have been upgraded years ago before RL's game really fell off a cliff.

Thats what irks me. Its not the lack of toughness or any other BS that people think were an issue (You don't know how many times I've read that the Rangers D was too soft and got mauled inside vs Florida despite almost every goal FLA scored being off the rush in that series) but it's the lack of making the most obvious changes. When your team looks demonstrably better with basically replacement level players in the position of Trouba and Lindgren, thats a pretty good indication that those guys shouldn't be playing in your top 4 (and in RL's case, at all.)

On JTM - If you can get him on your terms, then awesome. If not then let him go to Carolina. Theres more motivation on their end to get something done because they've been contending for a half decade now with nothing to show for it other than a few runs to the ECF on the years where they don't get knocked out by the Rangers before getting there.

Someone else will shake loose.
Guentzel would have been useless short term sugar high, we don't get past FL and losing further young assets are in even worse shape.
so no

We should attempt to improve the team at each and every opportunity

Also until we correctly build with a youth based foundation, barring luck, we are unlikely to go far in the POs.

This reads like some vey deep insecurities.

And what the f*** is he going to do about it? Sit by himself on the bench and mope about it like he does in Vancouver? GTFO with this fake macho bullshit,

I think someone here has some deep insecurities maybe.

Nice retort. You are the one up in arms over grown men hugging each other

Yeah, that's the only reason anyone would be concerned about the locker room culture. Nothing else has happened this year that would make people fed up with it. All sunshine and rainbows.

I'd actually rather protect less. Like top 3-5 only. If we get pick 12 I'd rather send that to them than take the risk of something happening next year and giving up a lottery pick.

I'd say maybe Top 7 or 8 protected, b/c imo the big drop-off is at 9 (Schaefer, Hagens, Misa, Martone, Bear, Desnoyers, McQueen, Frondell). But i can live w/ Top 5 protected so we don't lose next year's pick in a better draft.

You are the one equating camaraderie with softness but hey, you do you.

No I'm equating their softness, with softness. This team needs Rempe playing 3 minutes a game to not play like a group of frightened rabbits. Our highest paid forwards are allergic to contact. But I'm glad they have they have such good camaraderie they quit on the fans for a month because management decided to trade their 2 worst players.
