Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XV (Light em up!)

Interested to see Kaliyev. He is not great. A worse Kakko kinda. Haha. But he has a hell of a shot and goes to the areas you want. Does remind me of i believe, Martin Frk? Big shot but not much else. Maybe he can put it together since he is still young and kakko has played well for Seattle. You never know.

If you go out and get too much meat and potatoes you’ll just need skill guys next!


How about:

You can have ~2 pure skill guys
You can have ~2 really meaty, starchy guys

And… it’s 2025… the other 14 guys on your roster should be giving you a blend of both.

What is this imaginary delineation between guys with skill and guys with grit? Just don’t get guys who care more about their haircare routine and Lollapalooza ‘fit than they do winning hockey games. Like, it’s not even that complex… Mitch Marner has more grit than half OUR forwards, and I hate him. I hate saying anything nice about him. But just get players who will take contact to extend a play or make sure the puck gets out of the zone/stays in the zone. Guys who are willing to use the size they have to shield the puck and don’t mind actually having to push and shove a bit to keep it. You don’t need to be throwing thunderous hits. Just don’t be f***ing allergic to physicality in the most physical damn sport on earth. And beyond the physical, you know, get guys who have mental grit as well. Guys who LIKE training to get better in the off-season and enjoy pushing themselves to see what their best actually is. Guys who don’t start throwing pity parties when a player gets traded in a profession where people get traded routinely.

It’s not a choice between a lineup of Trent Frederics or a lineup of Mika Zibanejad.

You get to have a Panarin and Fox, who have superlative skills and are going to cry if you even threaten to body check them. And you get to have a Maroon and a Gudas who will potentially one day go to jail for killing someone with an elbow or shoulder, who will stand up for Fox when he’s crying because the menace on the other team said he was going to hit him on his next shift, but who kinda suck at hockeying. That leaves 14 other skaters who should be neither as “tuff” as Gudas nor as “soft” as Fox. Though preferably better skaters than both. Identify players who have a strong character and can play through adversity, who whether physical or not, will at least TAKE contact to make the right play. It’s not that wild of a concept. This roster is severely lacking on the gritty side of things, but that doesn’t mean go get five meatheads. It means go get players who actually have some f***ing heart. And when you get high talent guys, make sure that they either have SOME heart to augment their talent or that their talent is SO high that their allergy to physical touch can be overlooked.

If the Canucks would do something around Schneider for Pettersson I’d do that, then try to move Mika/Kreider for D help. KAM probably stays in this scenario.

You want to add a half ass like Pettersson to this core of mopes? Add one of Laf and Perrault at minimum plus our first and a guy like Othmann in all liklihood. Vancouver looking to deal him what? A year? Into his 11.6 AAV contract. I get not wanting miller but I want neither unless the cost is in our favor
 
Kyper and Bourne just had Rene Lavoie on and he mentioned a possibility of Mika going to Colorado in a Raantanen trade because they may not be able tonpay him and would like a cost controlled center, not sure what else would need to be added but sign me up if it's not ridiculous

I don’t think they would, but yeah idk why the Rangers consider Schneider so untouchable . He’s fine. But I happily give him up to get w top center in his prime

This is a great post I don’t really get the one track mind fans have. Grit or skill. Rebuild or all-in. That’s not what hockey is. You need to be doing both at all times because there’s so much parity things can change on a dime. Look at us!

The Rangers are very much in the race. Igor can get them there more than any other goalie out there. They just need to keep doing the roster surgery Drury neglected to do over the summer. The defense is in shambles and needs to be addressed ASAP with a big swing. And Trocheck needs to be named Captain if the rangers aren’t going to trade him. He’s picked up the sword and needs to be empowered so the team can rally around him.

It’s not even the midway point of the season folks. That’s tomorrow against the devils. Fantastic.

Even if he is re signed, I don’t think he’s going to be worth his AAV to this team

I just want players that attack. That want the puck and battle for it. Obviously not potatoes like Lindgren or Goodrow but with some meat in the skill department

I totally agree that we put these things in a binary way too much. The game is faster than ever which means reacting quicker in less space than ever. Doing the right things requires talent, smarts, and willingness to sort of "play through" which is something I always harp on. It's not about huge hits, it's about getting to the damn puck even if you get bumped and stop with the waving bullshit.

In pro wrestling they call it "stiff." Nobody goes out there to hurt people, but a lot of the best guys are gonna let you f***ing have it bit. Everything is hard and crisp and they're not afraid of contact because that looks real. Hockey players have to be stiff. I don't care if you're a skill guy. It's the f***ing NHL, everyone should have skill. Everyone has to play stiff too. That's what the hardest league in the world is.

The Rangers hurt themselves by putting this in a binary too. The whole culture on this team since Quinn (just giving a timeline, not harping on Quinn) us that the stars play 20 minutes a game together and can get away with murder, while your sandpaper gets 11 minutes together, and can't sneeze without getting benched. It creates a screwed up rewards system and lines that are not diverse. Line diversity is hugely important.

I do disagree just a bit on Fox and Panarin. I think, in the right environment, grit is contagious. With the right mix of guys and the team having the right habits, Panarin and Fox would buy in. Torts absolutely loved Panarin and Fox was a much more physical defender before this year.

The ability for that contagion to spread is not there in such a binary lineup.

Zibanejad never would. He's never shown it. He's just a flawed player who's had too many injuries, and he's just not it. We never should have extended him.

Also, low-key, Radko Gudas is really f***ing good actually.
 
Actually Gudas does kind of suck now, but hey, he's 34.
