Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XV (Light em up!)

Too bad we didn't rebuild like Detroit, Buffalo, Ottawa
I love this obtuse take... like we have anything to be more proud of than these teams.

I'd trade rosters with all 3 right now AND on top of that, none of them are destinations players like.

SO... we are just as, if not more horrific than they are AND we are a top city in the WORLD... with what seems to be an unlimited budget (outside of the cap obv) since we're still paying what 3 coaches who've been canned?

Do you cheer at the "Regular Season Champions" banner whenever you walk into the Garden?

Oh & BTW Detroit, another original six team, has ELEVEN Cups.

We have... four

"We are worse than the team with the longest playoff drought in sports..."

I said when the trade was made that the organizational limited the number of teams that they would actually trade him to because of other considerations. I thought it was pretty self-explanatory that they were only willing to trade him to a handful of teams where they viewed it lesser risk for him to become an impactful player in the short term or affect the rangers pr this year in games that they played against them, AKA trade him to the Western conference to a bad team. In some ways this is very much like when the bruins traded Joe Thornton and they just made the deal happen to a team as far away as possible that would not have as much risk to look awful in the short term, yet the trade had everybody in the league scratching their head and many people questioning why they weren't involved because they would have offered more than what was actually accepted in a trade. Unfortunately there are times that trades are dictated by things beyond the actual return
dude you literally invented this. "pretty self explanatory" that this thing i made up follows the logic in my own head! unreal

I don't think it is a stupid question. You are in charge. You can do whatever you want via coaches, linemates, etc. Forget the Rangers. You are in charge of Utah or any other NHL team. How much would you pay for KK? If you are going to say a player, 3rd and 6th are horrible then I think it is fair to ask what you would trade for him.
Part of the concept here should be, "ok... I can take a 3rd, 6th & some shitty Dman or i can keep him"

He's not (wasn't) a liability at this point.

We wanted him to be more productive. Of course.

But he's not nearly as ineffective or flat out detrimental as say Z right now & while he's due a contract, I have a very HARD time believing his skills wouldn't be desired MORE at the deadline as a rental.

That is possible as well. I like KK as a person but I was underwhelmed by his game. I saw him trailing the play and his linemates multiple times. I did not see his skating improving and he had extremely limited production in our playoffs. Now he can on a top 6 line for the Kraken at least until Eberle gets back.

kakko return sucked ass unless we move borgen to some other dumb GM for a 2nd at minimum.
We don’t actually care about Borgen. We just got him because he’s an expiring contract. If they don’t spin him they’ll just let him cap fall off. Same as U.V.

This was my thought also but maybe more wishful thinking (& I love 20... have his jersey, but at this point, we need to start getting assets to turn this roster over)
I also have his jersey and I'm sure at some point I'll look back on his career and remember him fondly but he definitely needs to go

Of the other 1st rounders from Kakko's draft year, some guys of note..

Kirby Dach, 3rd OA to CHI. Traded to MTL in 2022 for a 1st (13th OA) and a 3rd. Dach tore his ACL+MCL and hasn't done much of note in MTL. 9 pts in 34 games this season. Way too early to say anything about the player MTL drafted.

Bowen Byram, 4th OA to COL. Traded to BUF in 2024 straight up for Mittelstadt (former 8th OA). We've heard some smoke around Byram being moved out of BUF already, and COL got a decent player in Mittelstadt. 23 points in 36 games.

Philip Broberg, 8th OA to EDM. Offer sheeted by STL in 2024, EDM received a 2nd rounder as compensation. No idea how he's played in STL.

Vasily Podkolzin, 10th OA to VAN. Traded in 2024 to EDM for a 2025 4th. 11 pts in 34 games for EDM so far.

Alex Newhook, 16th OA to COL. Traded in 2023 for a 2023 1st, 2nd, and some no-name prospect. He had 34 points in 55 games last season; this season he has 6 points (all goals) in 34 games.

Peyton Krebs, 17th OA to VGK. Traded in 2021 (along with Alex Tuch, a former 18th OA in 2014) to BUF for Eichel. VGK wins a Cup with Eichel.

Nolan Foote, 27th OA to TBL. Traded in 2020 to NJD for Blake Coleman. Coleman is part of TBL's solid bottom 6 en route to 2 Cups.

NYR got a Borgen (former 3rd rounder), a 3rd, and a 6th for Kakko. Andersson got us one, single 2nd rounder (that thankfully/luckily is Cuylle who has been shaping up to be a nice player). Kravstov got us a f***ing 7th rounder.

I wholeheartedly believe we could have gotten back 1st round picks or former 1st rounders for all 3 of our former players in Kakko, Andersson, and Kravstov had Drury traded them earlier after realizing that these guys weren't in his long-term plans. Instead in each case, he ended up exacerbating some situation until "he's left with no options" or whatever. Drury painted himself into a corner with all 3 when I don't think he needed to.

NYR are getting significantly lower value on all of their top 10 former 1st rounders. They're put in dubious positions to succeed in NY, and their values are not maximized to bring back players that will succeed here. Both are bad for the team.

So Kakko was a cap move now?

That is AWFUL asset management.

Horrible.

The trade was a bad one AT BEST but this would make it absolutely inexcusable

Any division championship and President's Trophy is cool. It adds to the atmosphere of the building. Every team who has them has banners. They're cool. That 1989-90 Patrick Division Championship meant a lot to my childhood and is great memories.

I believe Gorton was the GM that traded Lias. He went for pick #60 so I do not think a 1st was available at that time. Guys value declines the further out from the draft year if they do not produce.

Drury made a lot of dumb trades. Shocked he is still employed. Definitely bottom 3 worst GM in the league along with Adams and Old Man Lou

Kakko had no value. They're gonna end up at least with quantity/hope picks. It's up to the scouts to turn those scratch off tickets into useful players. Go the NCAA route with at least one of those picks.

Call it the President's Trophy on the banner then

The 'champions' part is a goddamn atrocity & absolutely pathetic. Which i guess is what we are anyway.

The NYR... hanging pathetic banners since 1926... other than 4 seasons

Honestly, who cares? Whether is says Regular Season Champions, President's Trophy Winners, or Grandmasters of Funk. A team wins it every season and they put a banner up. It's contrarian and a waste of time to argue about what it says.

My personal vote would be “President’s Trophy?”
