Drury made a lot of dumb trades. Shocked he is still employed. Definitely bottom 3 worst GM in the league along with Adams and Old Man Lou
He made it to the ECF 2 of his 3 seasons. His draft picks are just starting to join the team. He's had success. Can't really say he's a bottom 3 GM based on facts.

Other GMs were free to give good offers and not low-balls at any time for Kakko. They obviously didn't since Drury took the Borgen deal.

The idea Drury was so afraid of Kakko he sent him as far away as possible is absurd. He sent him for the best deal.

Maybe this deal will make GMs deal with Drury a bit more honestly.

Chris Drury doesn't both quake in his boots about Kaapo Kakko haunting the Rangers AND trade him for being a lump at the same time. Come on guys.

Honestly, who cares? Whether is says Regular Season Champions, President's Trophy Winners, or Grandmasters of Funk. A team wins it every season and they put a banner up. It's contrarian and a waste of time to argue about what it says.
Because it's embarrassing to call a team 'champions' when they're not.

At all.

Not close.

So like walk into a dealership & just pay the asking price?

Got it.

I believe Gorton was the GM that traded Lias. He went for pick #60 so I do not think a 1st was available at that time. Guys value declines the further out from the draft year if they do not produce.
You're right, it was Gorton - Lias was traded Oct 2020. Drury was an assistant GM, then promoted to associate GM in Feb 2021. Gorton and JD were gone 6-7 months after the Andersson trade in May 2021.

Your second point about value declining over time is exactly what I mean. I really do think Drury could have gotten 1sts back for all 3 of those players had he chosen to move them earlier, before each player's situation became some critical mass media circus where Drury is just throwing former top10 picks away because they're so disgruntled in the NYR organization.

If a player doesn't seem to fit whatever Drury is trying to build, he has to either be firmer about what he's building, a better salesman, less of a dickhead, or way more proactive. I do think he is trying to build a particular team that is big/heavy and skilled and has been active in trying to make moves (short-term Lindgren contract, lots of talk of moving Trouba & everyone else being available), but they need to do something with the system the team plays. Something isn't right there. The coach doesn't matter. Laviolette, Bowman, Cooper, Quinn, Maurice, whatever. There's something wrong with the system this team/organization defaults to.

But back to the players/their values: We've heard about other teams being interested in NYR players/prospects. Gotta strike when the iron's hot one of these times.

Not sure I believe these rumors that they could've gotten more for Kakko. He was on the market for 6 years. If they dealt him out of conference for a lesser return, thats a terrible reason. It's also worth nothing at a time of locker room turmoil we have a player openly being insubordinate in the media. Im sure that spurred some of it. Not saying Kakko was wrong because he wasn't but both sides were ready to break up. They can recoup additional assets for Borgen or keep him if he plays well.

Take it up with every active team in the every major sport who has a division, Conference, or Regular Season banner up. That would be a really fun YouTube series.

Kakko was on the block in the media for weeks, and available on their internal Slack for way longer.

Is Drury supposed to send out a bat signal or something that he's really super serious this time and stop sending offers considering of AHLers and 6ths in 2029?

if zibanejad suffers a mental breakdown and leaves home to return to sweden without reporting to the team if Drury is a bully, perhaps we can terminate his contract.

Yes we should definitely reward the narcissistic dick players by firing the GM trying to improve the team. Who would be your pick for the new GM?

I think it's going to be Peca's job before long. The organization seems to be standing by Laviolette but the guy has no clue what he's doing adjustment wise. If they keep losing they have no choice.

Like the full nmc Drurys handing out, that'll teach those players. Never said anything about rewarding anyone, I havent been impressed with any of Drurys trades, why keep him around for this retool? All the country club guys need to go, but i don't want Drury making those deals.

If there’s anyone on this team I’m not trading, I think it’s Panarin. He’s the epitome of a hockey player. Gets everything out of his talent. Brings it every night.
I wouldn't want to either, but this isn't a one year quick fix. I can't see Drury thinking the same thing.

So now you're looking at Panarin this summer has 1 year left, he's 34 right after the season starts. He's clearly a PPG player still, but how much longer? His value to another team will never be higher than right now.

Maybe he's happy in NY and doesn't want to leave the city, but for a guy this good and has never won a cup, he's going to want to do that sooner than later.

The best move for the player and team success is for him to likely leave by the deadline. Yes there is a massive hole to fill, but it's happening one way or another be it a trade or age.

I didn't see this until today, but pretty much what I had assumed, Dreger said that the Rangers didn't get max value out of Kakko. Plenty of GMs around the league were interested, but had no idea a deal was about to go down this fast

At some point this has to be BS yeah? It comes up far too often that "GM X" wasn't aware. And in the case of KK everyone and their dog knew that Drury was at least interested in hearing offers. Maybe there's just a shit-tin of really incompetent GMs, but more likely it's just cheap quotes for gullible journos

Many teams will be interested in Borgen. Edmonton. Vancouver. Dallas. Florida. Winnipeg. Colorado. TB. There are so many looking to add D. Some teams will be interested in Lindgren.

Chris Johnston said teams had already targeted Borgen when he was in Seattle as a trade option before the deadline.

Edmonton is the best trade fit. They have nobody behind Bouchard. Emberson and Stecher. Edmonton also needs another RW behind Hyman. Reilly Smith. Edmonton knows Smith from Vegas. Edmonton needs to win this year after losing to Florida in the finals. Game seven.

Package Smith and Borgen to Edmonton retaining 50% on each player. Pittsburgh is retaining 25% on Smith. 1st round pick in 2026(Edmonton traded their first round pick in 25 to the Flyers during the last draft), 2nd round pick from the Blues in 2025(Broberg offer sheet compensation pick) and 4th round pick in 2026. $1,875,000 for Smith. $1,350,000 for Borgen. Edmonton is tight on cap space. The Rangers help Stan Bowman and Jeff Jackson with retaining on both players.

Smith at 25% retention cost the Rangers a 2nd in 2027 and 5th in 2025. Smith gets another opportunity for a ring with Edmonton.

Rangers retain 50% on Smith and Borgen. Smith and Borgen are each worth 2nd round picks plus another pick. Package them together and retain. Edmonton fills two holes on their roster.

The Rangers traded a 2nd and 4th for Wenneberg at 50%.

1st in 2026, 2nd round pick in 2025(Blues) and 4th in 2026. The Rangers keep the 1st round pick or use it as a trade chip for a future deal for a signed player.

Drury can say we got a first round pick from the Kakko deal for Borgen.

Use the remaining retention spot on Lindgren. All of the spots be available again in the summer and we can ask Panarin to waive his NMC for 50% retention.

The Blues did a great job with the Broberg and Holloway offer sheets. Both players are starting to realize their potential in St. Louis. Broberg was starting to come around in the playoffs for Edmonton. Holloway also became a good playoff contributor. Broberg is a top 2 D on the Blues and Holloway has 13 goals. He had a hat trick a few games ago. 2nd round pick for Broberg. 3rd round pick for Holloway.
