I dont think Buch will be back next year.

I figure they will try to improve the LD situation and roll with Strome for a year. Not the end of the world, but certainly not ideal.

It is a bit tricky caused if you are adding a keeper LD it means you are trading DeAngelo on RD most likely .... keeping Trouba, Fox, Lundqvist long term w a filler 3rd pair RD needed in the meantime.

They almost need a package move or Simultaneous deals so they aren’t stuck holding a body they can’t keep in expansion

W all that I agree I think Buch is the guy that goes and Strome/Chytil shift to RW

Who do you think the Rangers could target, who could be had for Buchnevich? Or a package containing Buchnevich?

I think adding to Buch could get you Klefbom out of Edmonton, at least the value is there. He's not a "true" 1st pairing D but hes good and a legit top 4 guy who would be a massive upgrade from Smith.

Other guys who hold positive value and I could see being moved are Chytil, Strome and DeAngelo.

I still maintain that the biggest moves that this team can make this offseason are subtracting players from the roster and putting in a more structured system. No more of this McKegg/PDG BS, Hank retires, Staal is gone by what ever means necessary, etc.

I don't think so. Schneider was great for NJ for many years.

They traded the 9th overall pick for him. Even assuming they did take Horvat and developed him the same way Vancouver did, does he really move the needle for that awful team, with zero talent surrounding him?

Not saying it was an amazing trade but its not some kind of disaster.
The Schneider deal singlehandedly took the Devils out of the McDavid and Matthews sweepstakes because a GM on his was out was trying to save face, up against an obvious rebuild. And they have nothing to show for it. This trade should be in textbooks.

I don't *love* Klefbom as the target, but this is the general direction for sure.

would anyone be mad at this??

CK - MZ - PB
AP - RS - VK
AL - FC - KK
BL - LA - JG

For that 4th line, you can swap in either of Howden or Barron.

I like the idea of that kid line being a bit of a sheltered unit and allowing them to grow together and eventually take over the 2nd line.

That could be the teams 1st line for 10+ years.
I don’t like it. Respectfully

Whether or not it was bad strategy has no bearing on whether or not it was a bad deal. I was actually in the camp that thought the #9OA was an overpayment at the time, but Schneider proved me wrong for the first several years, and TBH if injury hadn't derailed his career we likely wouldn't be having this discussion.

Sure it does. It wasn’t a secret that the Devils roster was crumbling and they knew those guys where going to be in the draft.

This started with a discussion of value (e.g. in a vacuum, you don't trade the top-10 pick for a goalie).

I absolutely agree that it was a bad idea in terms of strategy, but the value actually proved to be not far off.

I like the player and we don't need a knock out true blue #1 LHD (though it would be nice), but yeah, I think in terms of cost/value, its a more realistic move than some of the other things that have been suggested here (my suggestions included.)

Personally, I'd rather give up the better assets and go for a bigger fish but all indications are management plans to play this offseason more conservatively which I guess is probably the right move. They can still add players as the season progresses.

I don't think that there is a whole lot that needs to happen in order for this team to jump into a solid playoff team or dare I say dark horse contender next season. But improving the LD (both by player addition and Staal subtraction), diversifying the forwards/fixing the 4th line and changing (or at least tweaking) the system are musts.

If Rask is quitting the Bruins, could we get Frederic or Studnicka for Georgiev? Frederic is exempt from the expansion draft.
His wife is pregnant and games without fans absolutely suck, he chose to go home to his family and let Halak (who absolutely deserves it) shine.

edit: not pregnant anymore, they have a newborn, my apologies.

If we follow the path of the 2005 Crosby led Penguins and win 3 Cups I will be quite happy . There are many similarities between the two clubs . We actually might be a bit deeper in the player pool overall . I doubt LaFreniere will be Crosby like but even at 85 % will be nice . Malkin and Zibs somewhat compare then we get to Panarin/Kreider while Pens had Staal/Kessel . We are getting closer guys...have patience and enjoy these days ahead . Finding the right pluggers is always a key .

I think you could be looking at Buch for a Top 4 LD deal in the “offseason” and then when the season does finally start, likely January, in which they want to play the 82 games with the new TV deal it puts us in a unique position. By the time the trade deadline rolls around you could possibly put a package together around Tony D and other assets for a premium Center. Because at that time you will have Lundkvist as a potential replacement with the SHL season likely over by then. But that also could be a trade that gets put off until the 2021 offseason. Just thinking they may try to make a move in-season if they feel they are in a good spot to make a push.

Another option is to find a way to subtract Staal and Smith, and sign Brendon Dillon. Then you could use Buch + + in a package for another deal, maybe a center. You shift Strome/Chytil to wing. Maybe Chytil is in the deal.

My question is what can we get for Georgiev. Who is going to be in desperate need of a goalie? Toronto is one team I keep looking to. Who else? And what can we get? 2nd round pick? 2nd-3rd line tweener? San Jose? Lebanc is someone I’d love to add to this roster.

I wouldn't add to Buch for Klefbom.

Misses too much time.

Has one full professional season under his belt dating back to his SEL days.

Anything more than Buch is an over payment

I wouldn't sign Dillion. He'll make too much and doesn't really bring what we need.

Trouba needs a partner who can move, move a puck as well as cover his own end. A premium center is rarely available at the TDL and the times you see one available, its usually for a rental. I also don't think a premium center is necessary or even logical at this point. A strong, multi dimensional #2 ala Cirelli or Reinhart is a better fit.

I wonder if there is something that can be put together around DeAngelo and another piece for Reinhart and C.Miller (who despite his warts, is still a pretty good player and would look good in a 3rd pair role.)

I don't think you can say we were wrong on Howden. His chapter is far from finished. If he can be a 52% faceoff, 15 G 25 A role playing forward, that is a good thing and something this team needs. Skjei sure looks like a good defenseman now that he's actually in a system that keeps pucks out of the net. For all his positives, Quinn has sucked creating a team defense system. Hopefully, that changes. If it doesn't, he won't be here long. Hayes was a good player here. He just wanted too much money. He was getting better each year.

The Skjei part is just wrong. If anyone watched the Bruins Canes game the other night, he’s reverted back to, well, being. Brady Skjei. He was a disaster out there, ask any Canes fans. He just decided to turn into Scott Stevens when he played against us which should be expected

EDM isn't a good trade partner. Klefbom is their only reliable defenseman outside of Larsson. He's their all situations number 1 guy. I also wouldn't pay a premium to get a guy.

I think a deal for a guy like Oliver Kylington for Lemeuix/Gauthier makes sense. While I like the physical tools that those two bring, I really do, I don't know if they are in an environment where they are going to be encouraged to play in a manner that can maximize those their tools.

Kylington was a guy the Rangers could have got as a return on a rental for what 2 years? The physical tools are there, but he's played a reactionary game, don't know if it's nerves or inexperience but he's a guy I could see CGY moving on from, and a guy who may blossom with a change of scenery. The physical gifts are upper echelon with him, and he's played very well in the AHL as a teenager with a grinding lifestyle.

With the Seattle draft coming up you need next year to be a year where a guy can fill in those 5v5 minutes. The Rangers could do well by adding another guy who can fill a positional need.

And a combined you’re talking close to 2,000 NHL games, hundreds of points and tens of thousands of minutes, spread through different coaches, different positions, etc.

But that also doesn’t include the chosen ones who amount to nothing anywhere else they play either, despite the apparent litany of evidence that they should be great and the Rangers are foolish for not throwing them out there.

It’s a fairly complicated dynamic around here.

Jake Nakladal never got a fair shot.

He's ahead both physically and mentally. For all this talk about Howden being a great defensive forward one day, Chytil, the younger player, is already way ahead of him there. I don't know how much extra responsibility Howden is being expected to carry other than the PK. Chytil averaged almost 2 minutes more per game than Howden this season.

All of the negatives you applied to Chytil apply even more so to Howden. They're only close if you look at surface level stats, a deeper dive into them pretty much obliterates what you're suggesting.
completely disagree

once again its now about who's better.. its that they're much closer to one another than people put off

I'd love to get Gavrikov from CBJ. I really like his game, but I don't think they'd move him.

No way. And he went for a 5th. I thought he should have gone much higher. Was overlooked a couple of drafts I think. But the guy had an absolute monster world junior 20 before the draft. Now he's in the top 4 of the best defensive team in the league. Guys an animal. Completely fearless. Enjoys punishing guys and even taking the punishment.

Saw him take 3 straight point blank one timers off of Hoffman with different parts of his body, and went down to face a 4th. All on the same PK.

I don't think he's the type of guy you would need to budget a sports shrink for.

I also find it funny how the echo chamber loves Chytil but hates Howden. One is the golden child, can do no wrong... has no weaknesses we're allowed to speak of.. and the other is ECHL trash. No objectivity.

People defend Chytil with stats... and his age. Howden has similar stats while playing with worse linemates, taking on a lot more responsibility and not being as physically matured.

HF Boards gonna HF

I don't know what you are talking about. I learned to use the ignore function back in 2016-17 or whenever the boards had a couple of the guys I had to ignore as moderators. It's what made these boards tolerable. The publicly available advanced stats only account for 4-10% of observation points in the hockey game. Most advanced users of analytics in any industry will tell you that 5% of observations in a given scenario isn't conclusive to a holistic answer. It can answer what pertains to that set of observation points.

Trust me when I say this... teams have far more complex analytical systems, and ones where Howden has games he would show up on a set of metrics that you would measure a 4th line production, and Chytil would have his. If/When the puck tracking tech comes out there will be a new wave and method of kiddies misinterpreting information to make conclusions, but it will be different and better than what you see.

Seems like we have a lot of people here really confident that Kravtsov is going to make the team out of camp next year, and I'm unclear as to where this confidence is coming from.

I'd trade Buchnevich in the right deal, but I wouldn't be actively shopping him.
