There were too many Karlsson to the Rangers rumors in the last few years. Last year McKenzie and Friedman were both reporting the Rangers were interested in trading for Karlsson. Nothing happened.

In McKenzie’s last podcast, he said the Rangers were looking to sign Karlsson. Elliotte does a radio hit on Edmonton radio every Friday. He mentioned the Rangers as a possibility for Karlsson a few days ago. Karlsson’s wife was apparently home sick and they wanted to return to the east.

There were getting this information from somewhere.

The Karlsson to the Rangers rumors never made any sense.

If I was Karlsson's agent, I also would have been floating interest from the Rangers to get SJ to up their offer.

Fingers crossed, but I struggle to see Dallas resigning Zuc. It's just hard to justify a 1R pick in the coming draft when you can try to obtain similar production elsewhere in UFA.
Zucc was one of their top performers in the playoffs. They are not a team that is looking to the future. Given the way he just played, the first would be justified.

This is something that often gets overlooked.

Agents and others in the industry often float concepts out there to keep certain topics in the mainstream conversation.

They like Zucc and Zucc fit in very well in Dallas both on and off the ice. If Zucc is agreeable to re-signing, they should sign him. Yeah, they could target a different UFA, but then they run the risk of not getting the guy they want. Or worse, they get the guy they want, and he ends up not being a good fit. The other guys won't cost them a 1st round pick, but they will almost certainly cost more in terms of money and term. They know exactly what they will be getting with Zucc and exactly what he will cost. I think that's far more appealing to them than the uncertainty of their other options.

If there is a lockout and it leads to teams being given compliance buyouts, could see the Sharks using them for Vlasic

Do the Sharks give up any additional picks as a result of signing Karlsson?
That contract is going to be a BAD one very soon.

What does this have to do with surrendering Kreider for the 13th pick?

So let's have some names. What player do you believe is a better fit on the 4th line, getting 4th line minutes?

Trading Kreider frees up some money for us to land Panarin. Who is substantially better than Kreider in almost every way. It also allows the Rangers to use a number of options in that 2nd line LW slot. Players like Kakko, Kravtsov, Buch and Chytil could all get looks in that spot.

4th line players should not be making $4.4 million. Fast, Vesey, Lemieux, Lias, Nieves, Strome and Howden should get more ice than a D-man playing forward. That's not even bringing anyone up from Hartford that will likely have more jump than Smith.

Smith just has to go. 13 points last year can easily be replaced with a lot less cap.

You could, but you already know what you have with Zucc, how he fits in with the rest of your group, the fan base, etc.

Bringing in an unknown quantity carries its own set of risks that won't apply here. Now I think Zucc's next contract is going to be bad pretty quick, but so are most of these other high priced UFA deals.

I'm not against him as a buy low deal but people that hate Shattenkirk's D might burst a blood vessel watching Ristolainen defend.

I think he just needs to get out of Buffalo. The complete lack of structure and guidance that he and the other players there, especially the D, is an absolute joke.

Also really speaks to just how good Dahlin was there as a rookie.

Avs fan here.. looks like we will miss out on Hayes this year. Not a lot out there in FA to pick up a 2c without some kind of trade. Soooo with the 4OA and a prospect (jost/ Kaut) would that get a deal with zibs? He fits what we need. Kaut was our 1st round pick last year and looked good in Jrs.
Rangers future looks damn good and 2 picks in the top 4 would kick start a rebuild. Kakko/byrum. That alone makes me drool.

I would do it. Rangers get either Turcotte, Byram, or another center they love, and tank their season enough in the process that they probably have a good shot at getting Byfield, Lafrieniere, Lundell, even Raymond or Holtz could play center maybe.

Very happy if Karlsson is off the market. After seing us trade for stars like Lindros and Bure that were damaged goods, I would not want to take that chance again with a salary cap in place.

Shattenkirk's value should have gone up with EK staying. There were teams looking at Karlsson, but now that he isn't available, there really isn't that type of player out there in UFA. Myers is not that kind of player.

The bad news is Trouba's market probably skyrockets. We're not in the position to be giving up those kind of assets for him.

So, trading Shatty and signing a player that can fill in a more defensive role on the right side is the likely course of action. Develop our own players.

Agreed. Remember patience one more season. Keep acquiring assets. They grow together and hopefully becomes champions

I brought up the trade idea not due to wanting Panarin but as a way for both the Jets and Rangers to get something that they possibly want. I think that Panarin is not coming here and nor should he. For reasons well, well documented. This is a horse that does not need to be beaten anymore.

Saying Smith has to go and then doing something are two quite different things.

And who is he blocking on the 4th line? Who do you want to play 8 minutes a night on the 4th line, just to scream that this is no way to develop young players?

Smith is not getting paid like a 4th liner, but 1) who is taking him 2) whom is he blocking? He can play the role of protector and be the 12th forward. He can also drop back on D for those times when there are injuries or two defensemen are in the box or someone goes out with a 10 minute misconduct. The cap space can handle it.

That's absolutely bonkers. It's like he's squeezing SJ for reparations for every hometown discount he ever took in OTT.
Not really. When healthy he’s the best defenseman in the world.

Doughty got a similar contract, there was no reason to think Karlsson wouldn’t get around the same, regardless of the injuries

But injuries play a huge role in determining a player's worth, especially in the NHL where contracts are guaranteed. He's not worth that money.

Karlsson signed an awful deal with Ottawa. He wasn’t getting anything close to this somewhere else. SJ overpaid to keep him. His other choices were limited. Taking less money in TB. He wants to play for a winning competitive team. That describes the Sharks.

A vast majority of "Player X" to Rangers rumors never made any sense...as long as Sather was signing the checks, anyone and everyone were linked to the Rangers.
