The Leafs gave Phaneuf 7 years. The Leafs traded the contract to Ottawa for short term bad contracts. Ottawa retained money to trade Dion for Gaborik. LA is looking to buy Dion out.

Sean Avery played for the Stars in 2009. He dated Elisha Cuthbert. Dion Phaneuf was on the receiving end of Avery’s sloppy seconds comment before a 3-1 victory over Calgary. Cuthbert was also romantically linked to Mike Komisarek of the Montreal Canadians. Avery also dated model and actress Rachel Hunter, the girlfriend of Los Angeles center Jarrett Stoll.

I’ve brought up Bogosian from the Sabres before. He’d be a decent stop-gap physical RD for his final year of his contract.

Bogosian + 31st for Vesey + CLB 3rd ‘19

Sabres jettison Bogo with a year left which is a considerable cap hit.

Bogo isnt a cap dump....plus we are not hard up for cap space. This is horrible for Buffalo. You're not going to get a 1st rounder for Vesey

Buffalo once traded a 3rd rounder for Vesey not to play for them. They would have to pay so much more for him to play for them. Hockey games are what's important. A lot of people don't realize this.

What does that even mean?

31st overall for Jimmy Vesey isn't that crazy. The chances of a 31st overall player becomes a player of the caliber of Vesey (or better) is possible, but not likely. Does Buffalo even have the time to wait for that player to develop over 3-4 years to be a contributor when they already have Eichel, Reinhart, Mittelstadt, Ristolainen and Dahlin as their young core?

Hockey games are played on ice. Ice is necessary for skates to allow movement. Movement in the era of player empowerment is paramount. No-movement clauses have become commonplace. Common players end up as role players on Cup winners. Jimmy Vesey is a common player. Jimmy Vesey. Champion.

I don't want to use the pick... i want to trade it in a package for a better player than Vesey

Way I see it, there are two prices for Trouba. One trade is for his rights, the cheaper of the two. The other trade is with a deal in place or already inked. That one is much higher.

We really aren't in a position to acquire him without a deal. I completely respect his right to sign where he wants, request trades, hold out, whatever. But acknowledge he is willing to exercise his rights and we can't afford him holding out and further diminishing his trade value after cap cries up and line ups become set.

So for our purposes, we want to talk number and have a deal in place. What's the price? It won't be cheap. They want cheap, contributing players. Potential impact.

For the pro-Trouba crowd, what is the price with a contract essentially in place? Instead of knee jerk answers let's talk pieces.
I think it takes at least one premier young piece -- Lias or Lundkvist are the most obvious -- as the centerpiece. Probably add a secondary young piece (Lindgren?) and some window dressing

People certainly have their perception of Vesey colored by the fact that he was playing 3rd line minutes for the team with the fewest ROW last year, don't they? Yes, his performance was frequently frustrating – but then again, if he'd converted a few more of those chances that left us all groaning, he'd be a 25-goal scorer, and it's hardly his fault that the team's defense was a tirefire or that the team's second and third highest scoring forwards were traded away.

He's a big, strong RFA, who should score 20-25 goals as a middle-6 guy on a good team. By no means is he worth a top 15-20 pick, but by the same token, he's worth more than a 3rd rounder IMO. Where in the middle he falls is the real question.

All that being said, I imagine the eventual deal would include players on both sides.

Jimmy Vesey's body is 60% water. Less than ice, which is 100%, but still quite a lot.
