Unfortunately I can't find the link but I am sure I saw a story about Trouba that cited his girl friend wanting to attend med school in the US as being the cause of his problem in staying in Winnipeg. Whether I am remembering correctly or not we shouldn't underestimate the role of family in making career decisions.

Trouba is actually pretty quiet and unassuming. He's well liked on the team amongst both the vets and rookies. His agent is Kurt Overhart and that's been the root of the problem, imo. Regardless, he hasn't acted like a malcontent whatsoever.

He'd sign with the Isles, Rangers, Lightning or Avalanche in a New York minute, I believe. Not sure on other teams - might hold off another year.

Way I see it, there are two prices for Trouba. One trade is for his rights, the cheaper of the two. The other trade is with a deal in place or already inked. That one is much higher.

We really aren't in a position to acquire him without a deal. I completely respect his right to sign where he wants, request trades, hold out, whatever. But acknowledge he is willing to exercise his rights and we can't afford him holding out and further diminishing his trade value after cap cries up and line ups become set.

So for our purposes, we want to talk number and have a deal in place. What's the price? It won't be cheap. They want cheap, contributing players. Potential impact.

For the pro-Trouba crowd, what is the price with a contract essentially in place? Instead of knee jerk answers let's talk pieces.

That's a no-brainer, is Buffalo dumb enough to do it? Maybe if we take back a contract.
Is it a no brainer? 31 isn’t much different from 32...basically it’s a 2nd rounder...wasn’t vesey taken in the 2nd? Young 3rd pair defenseman plus young 3rd line winger for a low first high second...I’d say it’s not super ridiculous.

Shattenkirk and Smith are two different issues.

Vesey is going to be better than Smith playing the role of the 12th forward/7th defenseman?

You claim that Smith is not good at hockey. Please let me know how exactly this comes through from a forward that plays 8 minutes a night on the fourth line, plays the role of protector and drops back to play D when one or two of the defensemen are in the box or one gets injured?

Buffalo trading the 31st for Vesey? The chances of that? To quote Dean Wormer.....zero point zero.

Taken 66th overall, just like Fox
Played for Harvard, just like Fox
Was in 2 other team's system before signing with us, just like Fox

A vetted insider on the Winnipeg board said that he has heard from multiple sources that Chevy has his work cut out for him here with Trouba - specifically talking about limited trade destinations, and then multiplying that with the difficulty in contract asking price.

Winnipeg has already notoriously been a pain to deal with, now they are trading the premium asset here (which is something they have rarely done recently), and they seemingly have to either do it a discount because of obvious factors (Trouba's re-signability and their cap crunch). Or they could simply eat the year on Trouba and let him walk as a UFA at the end of the year (or more likely just trade his rights 1 year from now).

What gives first, Overhardt's contract demands/negotiations with potential suitors, Winnipeg's asking price, or simply Winnipeg's will to deal an asset at what they see as below market value [to the point where they feel they are better off treating him as a 1 year rental]?
And there it is. Que sera sera

From trouba’s quotes in that article. He doesn’t sound like a guy who is gonna cave.

Limited teams he would go to
High asking price
Some of those teams not in the position to be able or want to pay the prices

The Leafs gave Phaneuf 7 years. The Leafs traded the contract to Ottawa for short term bad contracts. Ottawa retained money to trade Dion for Gaborik. LA is looking to buy Dion out.

What worries me about Trouba is that he has acted like an entitled little ***** and I would not be confident in him signing with the Rangers. He has forced his way off of 1 team already. Unless an extension is in place, I don't feel confident trading for him
Rangers are one of his destinations. During his different issues with the team, guys like Friedman have said they think trouba would like to end up in NY. There won’t be a single issue resigning him if we trade for him. The price, that’s another story.

But don’t fret him not resigning. And also I don’t hold against Eli Manning, kevin Hayes, or Eric Lindros. The system is old and outdated. It’s servtitude. What percentage of a guy’s career is he the drafting teams ‘property’. I’m all for players choosing there spots. If I played, I would have forced my way to the rangers. Slip in the draft on purpose, whatever it took. So I’m not gonna blame guys doin what I would do

I think so. Vesey is a UFA who probably won't be here much longer, Pionk is in my view 4th on the depth chart on RD and we know how he struggled. It also saves us 4-5M in cap room assuming they don't take back a contract.

She's at med school in Florida and can't do her residency in Canada, or practice afterwards without another exam.

Why wouldn’t they make that trade, you gave no reason. Why is it mathematically 0.0 chance, explain why there isn’t a small chance. Why did you quote Dean Wormer and not just say zero. Explain, explain, provide your reasons.....

Friedman just said they're working towards hammering out the deal. How is that bad news?

That is good news! :)

Normally, UFAs to be resign earlier. They’ve had a long time to hammer out a deal. Some negotiation types tend to always drag out to the deadline. But with UFAs there aren’t usually a ton of guys that goes to 11:59.

Trading Vesey on this bloated roster is addition by subtraction. If Gorton can talk his way into a second, beautiful. A third is fine. Extra pick, go boom or bust for some kid in Europe/some kid who fell because of an injury/NCAA project who hasn't grown into his body yet.

Vesey is what someone on this board said years ago; Chris Higgins lite. He's not bad but his cap hit and what he produces on this roster don't mingle. He's fine around the net for 13-14 goals and will pot 2-3 beauties a year. He's an average player who will probably move around 4-5 times and maybe finds his way onto a Cup team as a role player.

I’ve brought up Bogosian from the Sabres before. He’d be a decent stop-gap physical RD for his final year of his contract.

Bogosian + 31st for Vesey + CLB 3rd ‘19

Sabres jettison Bogo with a year left which is a considerable cap hit.
