For F either trade Krieder for decent haul or best return on Vesey/Strome/Names

Lias Ziba Kakko
Lemmy Chytil Buch
Strome Howton Krat
Vesey Names Fast
Nieves (depth: need 2 AAAA vets, Lettieri)

I really dont understand why we would buy a yone out. We dont need the cap space right now and buying players out brings their cap hit for double the years down the road when we will actually need the cap space. Smith Staal shatty, their contracts end in 2 years. Plus we could possibly get something for them on their last year.

Panarin isnt needed, Karlsson no, and so on. Keep building from within and use our cap when we need it

The Rangers should use their cap space to absorb 1-year cap headaches from other teams. Callahan can provide some of that veteran leadership people are clamoring for. Clarkson can be LTIR'd. Pick up a couple of sweeteners in the process.

No need to clear the decks of guys who only have a year or two left on their contract just to make it a headache for extra years.

I want the space available to do things now. Anyone who thinks the Rangers are simply going to sit on $10 MM in cap space this summer is not paying attention. I want as much space as possible to be as flexible as possible and in the case of Smith, I want to clear space for younger players.
I get that. Except for the “now” part.

I’m all about the taking on of contract(s) not great than two years... for more assets. But buying out smith when he can be boxed or stashed in Hartford seems short sighted to me.

I want the flexibility in two years. Don’t need the ghosts of Smith’s and Staals past to come haunting.

The team can do what it wants but I don't see the point in turning Smith from 2 years into 4, Callahan from 1 year into 2 and so on. They can use up the cap getting aggressive this summer but then the team will be trying to build a contender in a few years with 2019 cap hits lingering.

JD just had an article talking about washed up NHLers providing value in the AHL. If they want a roster spot for a kid, Smith can play in Hartford.

This happens all the time. Money burning a hole in our pocket. Erase our mistakes with money and accelerate the process with more money. But it doesn't work. I appreciate that people want to win now, but I want to win. Forcing timelines instead of allowing for an organic process is rarely effective.

But the vet has to be in on it. Someone going there hating every second of it won’t do any good. Do I think that it’s justified for Smith to go down there and sulk? No of course not. But it is what it is.

CBA section 11.18 (page 51):
Each Club shall be limited to no more than three (3) such Buy-Outs outside the regular period over the term of this Agreement pursuant to Paragraph 13 of the SPC.

The key there is OUTSIDE the regular period. In other words, during the secondary window that opens after a team's final arbitration case.

The people who posts like this are written for have heard it a hundred times. It falls on blind eyes, because it’s all part of their fantasy of moving certain contracts. Sure, it’d be cathartic, but it’s impractical. That’s the risk you run when you sign these players to large and long contracts with protections, and why we should be so leery of doing it again.

The concern over a $1m cap hit 3 and 4 years from now is hilarious to me.

We're a team that routinely spent to the cap. We haven't the last couple years, but we will likely do so again at some point.

I've never been a person who likes spending tomorrow's money today.

Yeah it really doesn't make sense but there are people who want them to spend to the cap (or close to) now.

I don't get the obsession with buying out Smith either. He can be waived.

How about as a fan I'm tired of watching this guy play and block better players from playing?

Then you need a new coach because the GM should not need to save the coach from himself. If Staal is terrible again and is blocking Hajek from playing the coach should just healthy scratch him.

Unfortunately with the way things are the GM very often does have to save the coach from himself.

We’re a team that routinely spends to the cap and has often had dead space situations that haven’t stopped us from doing what we need to.

Unfortunately I think the GM is on board with Staal playing as much as possible.

If the plan is to be bad, okay fine by me. But if you're going to spend big money and try to sell this whole "we're ready to compete!!11!" angle, then he better be sitting more often than not.

$1.1m for Smith, $1.1m for Girardi, might as well buyout Staal too. And then the next Hagelin for Etem trade happens because we don't have $2m for a cog.

What might as well buy out Staal too. He still has value to the team in his intangibles. Smith has none.

I’d prefer to trade him, of course, but I don’t think that’s likely.

Unless the team is going to sign Panarin and someone else buying out anyone is a bad idea. Why would we possibly buy someone out, have a ton of leftover cap space this year, and then extend the cap hits to the future when they will matter more?

Besides I'm reasonably sure Staal would have trade value (with retainment) if he's willing to accept something, same for Shattenkirk, I am less sure on Smith even though I think he's a far better player than Staal because his reputation is bad

Did he sulk before? Do we have proof the worst case scenario has to play out? Will he be motivated to continue his career with another contract? Did Redden or Beleskey sabotage the team?

This isn't a vacuum. There is another contract on the books. People suggested more than one, hence my response. It adds up.

Buying out a player now isn’t about cap space.
