Strome was an underrated move from last year as a younger vet who is a bit of a Swiss Army knife. It would be nice if Gorton could trade Namestnikov and bring in a guy like Boyle to be another in that similar style of versatile forward. It would also insulate guys like Howden, Andersson and Chytil in case they need to shift to wing for less responsibility at certain times.

Trade Kreider.

Trade Namestnikov.

Sign Boyle.

Buchnevich-Zibanejad-Kakko
Kravtsov-Strome-Chytil
Lemieux-Howden-Andersson
Boyle-Nieves-Fast

If they can add Callahan and get a piece from TB to take him I’d probably trade Fast.

Seeing Strome as the 2C while centering basically two rookies screams disaster waiting to happen.

When the buyout window opens up next week, I think you will get a clear indication of what the Rangers are thinking. Smith is a given. That adds $3MM to the available $ for this summer. If they go beyond that then they have even bigger plans to spend money.

I think that if the Rangers trade for Callahan, they may buy him out immediately.

What you got Tampa? 2nd for 1st? Taylor Raddish?

I don’t think we’d buy him out. Not worth taking the cap hit next year. Plus while I’m not a fan after the way he left I have to think they’d view him as a great veteran to have in the locker room.

I always forget how many buyouts a team gets. Is it 2 max per summer?

Id rather not help Tampa out for their pick that will be at the end of whatever round you get it in. Like if you get a 2nd its basically a 3rd pick. I think personally the time to take on bad contracts for mid round picks was last year. I'm against it mostly because it hurts flexibility cap wise if something worth while comes up that requires that cap space. I think bringing former rangers back isnt something that would happen anyway, especially a guy who left for the money. He was offered a good contract here and I'm happy he didnt take it but let's not bring him back here now that he is useless.

I don’t think any buyouts make sense for us. We don’t need the cap space right now just ride out the contracts and not extend the cap hits. If you are willing to buy them out then sending them to the press box or waivers if kids are ready won’t be an issue

I’m sorry but you need to give a different reason if you want to move Namestnikov and replace him with Boyle. The Russian is a much more universal than Boyle with a bigger toolbox.

I really don't have any interest in him as a player for many of the reasons you mentioned. I'll take the sweetner and use some of my extra payroll space to buy him out. He's a bit of a unicorn in that he can't be placed on LTIR right now and his team really needs the space. The other LTIR play that can be a cash move is Clarkson...He's LTIR and Vegas owes him $3MM cash this year. If $ is one of our assets, let's figure out how to utilize some of it to gather additional assets.

If we're going to buy out anyone it should be Staal.

I can't stand Cally, but I'll take him back for the right return. If he can stay in one piece he may be of some value to someone at the TDL.

@bobbop I think you’re a great poster and certainly have a resume I just don’t see why we would buy anyone out right now... that includes Cally and his 1 yr salary. Just kicking cans down the road for zero reason IMO
I want the space available to do things now. Anyone who thinks the Rangers are simply going to sit on $10 MM in cap space this summer is not paying attention. I want as much space as possible to be as flexible as possible and in the case of Smith, I want to clear space for younger players.

Getting aggressive I like this! Is this your personal strategy if you were running the ship or have you heard some things? Or a mix of both.

Buy out Smith if we can’t trade him at 50%

Try to trade either Pionk or Shatty (retain maybe 2.65 on him)

Ride out Staal until deadline or contract expires unless Hajek and Rykov show they’re ready now no doubt

Skjei ADA
Staal Fox
Hajek Pionk/Shatty
Rykov Claesson
In wings: Lindgren, Tarmo, Keane, maybe AAAA vet

The team can do what it wants but I don't see the point in turning Smith from 2 years into 4, Callahan from 1 year into 2 and so on. They can use up the cap getting aggressive this summer but then the team will be trying to build a contender in a few years with 2019 cap hits lingering.

JD just had an article talking about washed up NHLers providing value in the AHL. If they want a roster spot for a kid, Smith can play in Hartford.

This happens all the time. Money burning a hole in our pocket. Erase our mistakes with money and accelerate the process with more money. But it doesn't work. I appreciate that people want to win now, but I want to win. Forcing timelines instead of allowing for an organic process is rarely effective.
