The part of the article that intrigued me the most was Gorton’s comment;

“There’s also the (10%) allowance where you can go over the cap. We are not looking at as if we can only make one big move or addition. We’ll see where it goes.”

Hmmm...

That doesn’t sound like someone who is simply going to mail in his draft picks.

the 10% allowance mainly applies to LTIR guys that count over the summer...so if anything that tells you they are looking at taking on a bad contract.

I think the Rangers are more interested in live bodies than retired ones right now. The 10% allowance is over $8MM. That's enough in and of itself for Hossa and Horton with plenty left over. In fact, Horton is already summer LTIR so he has essentially no cap implications.

Not only this, but if you talk like you’re in the bidding for UFAs, you drive up the price that other teams will have to pay. That makes other, better assets available to you.

I'm very Pro Panarin, but other than that I hate all this news.

I don't want to trade four first rounders for anyone, let alone Point. I would consider trading, maybe even be in favor of it. I mean, I'll give them #20, a prospect, and a future first maybe (not next year's), but that's a non-starter for them I'm sure.

I would much rather move Kreider for a top-10-ish pick rather than a Trouba-level defender. Maybe that's just not possible.

And most of all, even though I want Panarin, I don't like them in the mindset that they are gonna be back in the playoffs this year, or trying that hard for it. Even though I'm Pro-Panarin, I think they should settle in for another nice bottom-10 finish with the kids. And then make a consolidation trade into the top 3-5 next year for a top center or #1 D.

I may be off base but if its Point then its Brady. Build around that as a base.

I’d love to not overpay guys who are performing well as parts of top notch ensembles just to have them come here, fly almost solo and then be disappointed when they don’t look the same.

Point is great. Is he a 90 point player on this team? I’d bet absolutely not.

Nor is Trouba a 50 point player and reliable top pair guy here.

You can interpret it how you want but Gorton hasn’t swayed AT ALL from patience and build and core.

If u wanna read accelerate or UFA u can but he’s never (nor has JD) said anything close to that.

Patience is what they both say but tea leaves and such

I don’t want to interpret anything of the kind. I don’t like it. But Gorton literary says that he will try to make multiple additions this summer. If he was in the ‘it’s too soon camp’ it wouldn’t be unclear if they have to buy someone out or not. Or what do you mean?

Zibanejad for 1 year of Trouba? Cmon mannnnnn.

And even if he was willing to extend, that does not mean he was going to extend with other interested teams. So there is less leverage to ask for a player of Zibanejad’s caliber.

Yeah we’ll hold onto our 1C

Had to double check that wasn’t a spoof account

Does he really want to play for Tortorella?

If I'm Hayes (or any UFA) I am not putting my eggs into any basket until I see who else in the league is ponying up come July.

Hockey and contract aside, would you rather live in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area or Philthydelphia - or at least be given the option to decide that first?

Just me, but I mean cmon. The whole trading for rights thing is a waste of assets imho, unless you have prior knowledge the dude is signing...

I'm not sure why we would add high priced dmen when we have a lot of young d prospects coming up that should fill those spots. I'm willing to give Skjei, DeAngelo, Fox, Miller, Hajek, Pionk, Lundqvist,Rykov etc the chance to fill the roster when it's ready. I mean we are pretty much stuck with Staal, Smith and Shattenkirk for a couple of years so there isnt any use log jamming the roster even more and blocking out guys like Fox or Rykov. Imo I'd like to see them leave the d alone for now.

Gorton said they'd look at the second buy-out window in July. That's where the 10% comes in. You don't need to buy anyone out until you see how free agency plays out. If they land what they're looking for, they can go over the cap by 10% in July and use August buy-outs to start the season cap compliant.
