The concern over a $1m cap hit 3 and 4 years from now is hilarious to me.
It's not the cap hit. It's just that it's not necessary. Why drag out these ghosts for any longer than necessary. Bite the bullet for another year. See what happens. Might even recoup a couple picks if the guys play well and the Rangers retain.
I suppose if they really want to break the bank for Panarin, they could do a buyout or two. That's the only reason it would become a consideration.
But personally, Id just ride it all out for one more year. Let the kids grow. Smith can sit in the press box if he's really in the way.

Shedding useless players has inherent value is really all I’m saying.
Not unreasonable at all. I'd give it a year though. See what plays out.
The guy is like then to shed, and it would be easy, is Claesson. Cutting ties would be good for him and for the team. Win-win.

9OA is the starting point. i want their 1st next year too for a contract that bad

Look at all of these trade rumors regarding older players signed to big long term deals. Their teams are trying to trade them. Lucic. Eriksson. Neal. Perry. Phaneuf. Turris. Lucic and Eriksson may be traded for each other. Lucic is from Vancouver and Eriksson played for Tippett in Dallas. There was a rumor on Friday concerning Neal getting traded for one of those contracts. Lucic. Turris.

The NHLPA meetings begin today. They will discuss the cap for next season. They must be doing high fives today. Skinner got $9M. The Sabres will be looking to move the Skinner contract in a few years. The next GM will be stuck with that task.

$10M for Duchene.

No buyouts.Hopefully Smith plays well enough where we can trade him during the season for any kind of asset.

I so agree no buyouts but I could see it happen w Smith . He’s not gonna increase his value . At 2 million per he should be tradeable

Yeah the ducks would have to give us a ton. Like their 2019 1st and 2020 1st

If they eat half the contract and then take a Smith at full pop it breaks even . Not happening here but that’s what they would have to do somewhere

If they eat half of Perry's contract and take on full Smith contract then we won't be getting 2x 1st rounders. If you want 9OA and next year's 1st you'd most likely need to take Perry at full hit.

I can totally see Duchene get $10M per. Panarin around 11-11.5 per. EK north of $12 per.

Doesnt even need to increase his value-just not suck enough where we can get rid of him at all. That in itself is an asset

Gorton cannot keep putting himself in a position to sign players at the peak of their career to long term deals. It’s too dangerous. These guys must be locked up long-term when they are 22-24 y/o if they are worth investing in, or traded if they aren’t.

It’s insane if Gorton puts himself in a position to resign guys like TDA or Buch after career years in their mid 20s.

Your not getting 2 firsts to take on Perry. While yes his cap hit is high at $8.63MM, it's just for 2 more seasons.

He also has a full NMC.

Side note, this upcoming season is the only one where he doesnt get a signing bonus. All the other years including next summer he does.

If we keep Staal, Shatty and Smith for 1.5 years — how will our blueline look in 22/23 when we are supposed to start to make the POs?

Look at Skjei. Look at a kid like Nurse. It takes time for these guys to come into the NHL and establish themselves. A long time. Just go to nhl.com and look at the stats page of random defenders. When did they start to be ready to really contribute?

We can’t have 3 rookies on the blueline in 21/22 and expect to be able to make the POs anytime soon.

I have an extremely hard time seing how it can be worth it to keep all three around for 1.5 years. Like 2/3 are totally worthless fits for us too. Sure, one of Staal/Smith wouldn’t kill us. But two? It’s horrible. When we have TDA, Pionk and Fox — a small vet PPQB that can’t handle tough defensive minutes is also horrible.

I think the cost at the bottom line will be much smaller if we take care of 2/3 three this summer as opposed to in 1.5 years. Much smaller even.

Better make sure the big money contract is given to the right player.

I think its 48 hours after the last cup final game or June 15, which ever comes first then later in the summer during the arbitration process.

The regular buyout period is either 48 hours after the SCF ends, or June 15th, whichever is later. This year, June 15th will be later, so that's when it begins.

The second buyout period occurs after the teams' final arbitration case is settled (whether or not it actually goes to arbitration). I believe the team has to have at least 2 players file for arbitration in order to open this window. Buchnevich, Claesson and Pionk are all arbitration eligible.

Smith doesn’t even play defense anymore - who is he blocking? Also the Rangers won’t regularly play two rookies at LD (just look at RD last season when they brought McQuaid to shelter ADA and Pionk) at least not until the later part of the season so Staal wouldn’t block anyone, at least not for 19-20. Shattenkirk became a problem when Fox was brought in and the whole right side being so homogeneous. And even there a move can be delayed til around Christmas time having Fox spent time in Hartford until then - RD are always getting a chance and if Shattenkirk even marginally improves on what he started to show from February on - he’d be tradable with some money retained.

The only solid argument for buyout I read is from @bobbop under assumption that the Rangers will be going after big names and needing cap space to bring them.

In doing so they would undermine everything they’ve done to build correctly and organically over the past 2 seasons... they would signal the rush-job they’re starting and would do it without ANY kind of defense.

Not one player back there is going to be here when this team is “ready” aside from maybe ADA or Skjei

Pretty dumb IMO just to “go for it” now with 55% of a team
