This is why this lottery is so interesting. No so much about who to take at #1, but whether or not that team accepts the Ottawa offer that will more than likely be coming their way.

In this scenario, you're basically trading Alexis L for Stutzle and who? Assuming Byfield goes to LA at 2 and Perfetti goes to Detroit at 4. Drysdale? Raymond?

In that scenario, I'd love to walk away with Stutzle and Rossi/Holtz at 3 and 5 respectively.

In that scenario I think the Rangers walk away with Stutzle and Sanderson.

Ironically the whole 1st for 3+5 thing doesn’t even work in that NHL draft sim site lol

With how the site assigns pick values, 3+5 is more valuable

In fairness, prior to Andersson and Chytil who are both a whopping 20 and 21 years old respectively, the team had practically no draft picks for years. The issue is not the young players, it's the fact that this team doesn't have any 23-26 year old home grown stars which normally must come through drafting. Gorton has done an admirable job in trying to bring in some guys who can help augment the younger guys in this age range or about to enter that age range but they were guys who other organizations saw as secondary players (Lemieux, ADA, Howden, Hajek, Strome) which made them available in their individual pursuits for more success. It's not to say they are bad pieces but that's the issue and why there is no depth. That and the lack of cap space from bad contracts.

FWIW Stepan looks better than any player on our team the last 3 games...pretty sad for us
Stepan is a 3C making more than any F we have not named Panarin. He never lived up to 1C expectations, and hasn't put up 2C numbers for a couple seasons now. Fast put up more points than Stepan this season, and if we hadn't traded him when we did, his NTC wouldn't expire until after next season. We'd waste a protection slot on him in the Seattle draft.

We absolutely made the right move there, even if Andersson never plays another NHL game.

Great post. :thumbu:

The last three times the 1st overall was traded were 99, 02, and 03. Of course it happened in 98 as well but it was a weird sequence of events.

Vancouver went from #4 to #1 by adding two 3rd round picks. Granted it was considered a very weak class and just a weird draft overall.

2002 was weird because it involved the right to swap picks in 2003 but that never happened. 1st overall for 3rd overall and the right to swap 2003 1st round picks.

In 2003 Pittsburgh traded #3, #55, and Mikael Samuelsson for #1 and a 3rd so they could take Fleury.

Granted drafting and scouting has evolved since then but #3 and #5 seems like a ton to move up.

Hey, can we like stop with the Eichel proposals? They’re 100% cancer.

Point A: We are going to have to trade a fortune with a combination of prospects and futures. Why should this concern you? Well, just the fact that we are a one line team and just got demolished due to the significant lack of depth in our lineup.

The conclusion you should come to: “oh, we have extremely poor depth as it is, let’s not trade away possible depth in the form of futures and key prospects for something that will surely destroy any possibility at being able to build a deep lineup. Specifically, for a player that will cost a high percentage of our cap space in addition to Jacob Trouba, and Artemi Panarin. (also honorable mention in that even if we did have Eichel, there is a reasonable possibility Ryan Strome still might be the second line center and on the first power play- I mostly joke with this, but there’s a semblance of truth to this...)

Point B: you shouldn’t have your cap tied up in 3/4 players, this, preventing you from being able to have a deep lineup. I.E please see “Maple Leafs, Toronto.”

Now that logical points have been made, please get that god damn idea out of your head and at least try to be realistic.

Thanks!

I have not been paying much attention to CBA stuff

Did they cover whether a player like Strome who would have been 26 years old still on July 1st is still gong to be considered a RFA even though now he is 27 (the age where usually all players earn UFA status)
