If they firmly believe the team is a playoff team, like you stated, then a salary move like that gets made in the off-season.
The 1st was too valuable imo. Skjei was done here, who knows if the 1st is still an option in the off-season?

If we added Barkov this team immediately is a cup contender. That would be a coup de gras. I’d say there’s about a .1% chance of that happening before the deadline of 2021 but here’s hoping.

I agree with that thinking about Skjei... what I'm saying is that the possibility of the 1st not being an option in the off-season doesn't matter if you firmly believe the team is a playoff team. You keep the best roster for the stretch run that you possibly can.

I'm sure they believed they had a shot. They were right there on the bubble. But firmly believed they'd get there? No.

I see what you mean. Nobody knows how we would have looked if this team was able to keep on playing because they were on fire. Really sucks that they lost momentum the way they did with the stoppage

Barkov is amazing but I'd venture a guess he'd cost a lot. I'd be all over Cirelli this off-season

I want Barkov but we aren't in a position to trade assets for him. We need to build the bottom 6 and get a 2c. Trade assets for Barkov and you have nothing in the bottom 6

Perhaps they believed without Skjei they could still make the playoffs. His play at the time was not all that helpful to their pursuit.

I think the consensus is Lafreniere is the better player, and has the better odds of being the better player.

Byfield, isn't quite on his level right now, and has lower odds of being the better player, but if he hits on those odds, it's an incredibly dangerous combination.

The Rangers have typically when one of Bob's go-to survey teams. The fact that 10 out of 10 teams had Lafreniere number one, tells me the Rangers wouldn't pass on him for Byfield. I could be wrong, but I just don't see them passing on Lafreniere without getting a major sweetner to off-set the risk.

Would you send Ottawa the first for their third and fifth?

They weren't on fire. They were 4-4-1 between the deadline and the pause and they were giving up well over 3.5 goals per game.

We could easily do both. This team has so many picks, prospects, and roster players to work with in a trade. The assets being moved for Barkov certainly wouldn’t overlap with assets moved for a bottom-6 player, at least I hope I wouldn’t.

We have the assets to trade for Barkov, a LD, and a bottom-6 Player or two if we want to, though I’d be happy with any one of those things being done. Chytil/Gauthier/Lemieux is one half of a potentially useful bottom-6. I’m guessing Fast will be a cap casualty. Replace Howden with a decent 4th like center and McKegg with an NHL player and our bottom-6 is looking much better.

I'd very seriously consider it.

I think the Rangers would do it.

A totally insane scenario just ran through my head where the Rangers trade 1 for 3 and 5, then work out some crazy deal to move back up to 2 using one of those picks, since LA has crazy forward prospect depth anyway.

What do you think a package would look like for Barkov? And don't forget we still need to resign him along with Zibanejad soon. Just don't see how it would work but stranger things have happened

I would too. I understand the theory of not passing up on the BAP, but I feel like the team is at the point where they need to start finding the "right" guys. And if 3 and 5 gives them that ability, they should at least consider.

I've brought up Eichel before, if h was truly available and Hank retires while Staal is bought out, he's the type of player I'd open up A LOT for. Signed long term at $10m which is probably close to what Barkov will get when he hits UFA.

If we look around the league at the teams who will more than likely be looking at cap issues, there will probably be some good value options available for teams:

Toronto - Kapanen or Johnsson?

Vancouver - Virtanen or would Vancouver retain on someone like Roussel s they could gain more cap space? @~$2m per season Roussel wouldn't be a bad depth forward for 2 years. Or would the Rangers have some interest in Ferland with money retained from his $3.5m cap hit? 3 years left.

Calgary - Jankowski and Bennett have been mentioned here before. That team is going to need $$ to build a new defense and get a goalie.
